CHAPTER 1 - THE BIRTH OF WICCA

Wicca is a new non-Abrahamist religion. The word Wicca means witch in old English. The religion was simply known as the witch cult or the ancient religion. It was introduced in 1954 by a British man called GERALD GARDNER. Gardner retired from the British civil service in the early 1940s. After retiring, he learned a bit about paganism and occultism. Combined with his background in anthropology, he introduced the religion in 1954.

After founding the religion, he became an initiate of a coven of witches located in New Forest, Hampshire. The name of the coven was THE NEW FOREST COVEN.
