THOMAS HOBBES
Thomas Hobbes was one of the best English philosophers who is famous for his political thoughts. He was a person of practical mentality and his ideas were mostly connected with the contemporary politics. According to him human beings are not naturally political or social and it is our duty to make a political decision without being influenced by an outsider. The main matter of his concern was the problem of social and political order and how human beings can live without a fear of civil conflict.
Born on 5th April 1588 in Malmesbury, Wiltshire; he was the son of Clergyman. In his early childhood his father left him and his education at Oxford University was sponsored by a wealthy uncle. After completing his graduation, he started to work as a tutor. In 1908 he became the tutor of William Cavendish, later earl of Devonshire. The Cavendish family was the later support system of Hobbes. Along with William, he travelled various countries. His frequent visit to Europe gave him a chance to meet many renowned western thinkers including the astronomer Galileo Galilei and the philosopher Rene Descartes. As the civil war broke out in 1640, he moved to Paris fearing the reaction of the Long Parliament to his writing. For eleven years he remained in exile. Between 1646 and 1648, he was the mathematics tutor to Charles, who was also in exile. The best-known work of Hobbes ‘Leviathan’ or ‘The Matter, Form and Power of a Commonwealth Ecclesiastical and civil’ was published in the year 1651. His idea of living was to escape from the fear of violence and use the freedom to make social contact with the people and accept a central authority. Hobbes felt that monarchy provided great authority. The ideology of Monarchy
