    WHO WAS MACHIAVELLI?

The ever-greatest Italian political philosopher and diplomatic statesman, Niccoló Machiavelli is the best known for his famous work, "The Prince’. This diehard proponent of unified Italy is also regarded as the father of modern political theory. Many of his thoughts and characterization of the unscrupulous politicians in his books, introduced the term, Machiavellian to coin the rude and crucial politicians.

On May 3, 1469, Niccolò di Bernardo dei Machiavelli was born in Florence. It was time when Italy was segmented into four quarrelling states. He belonged to a wealthy family holding prominent offices in Florence. Though most of his childhood is still uncovered, it is known that he had his education within his house as his father had a vast library. The young Machiavelli entered the political service of Florence, shortly after the fall of the ruling Medici family. With his distinguished policies, he soon became an important diplomat in strengthening Florence governance. Much noted for deviousness, he was engaged in many diplomatic missions which included his meetings with Louis XII of France, Pope Julius II, the Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I. But the one who influenced Machiavelli the most was a prince of the Papal States named Cesare Borgia. The title character of his famous and influential political treatise ‘The Prince’, had elements from the shrewd and cunning Borgia.

His political career didn’t last long, all the things went downward after the comeback of the powerful Medici family. He was tortured, jailed and exiled temporally from Florence. It was during the exile, he wrote The Prince to please the Medici’s and get back to his office. Though he was not able to be in Medici’s good favor list, this book became his most well-known book. ‘The Prince’ was first released in the form of a pamphlet in which he described the qualities of an ideal leader as a tyrant and amoral for whom the end justifies the means. He was never able to be back in politics as this book alienated him from his native people too. Machiavelli spent his later years in a small village outside his homeland and died there on June 21, 1527.

Though Machiavelli’s name is associated with practice of diabolical expediency in the realm of politics that he used in his book, his views are not that much utmost. In his later works including Discourses on the First Ten Books of Livy (1517) and History of Florence (1525), he penned as more political moralist. Yet the term Machiavellian even today showcases an action undertaken for gain without regard for right or wrong…

    QUOTES OF NICCOLO MACHIAVELLI

    Reality

For the great majority of mankind are satisfied with appearances, as though they were realities, and are often more influenced by the things that seem than by those that are.

A wise ruler ought never to keep faith when by doing so it would be against his interests.

Many have imagined republics and principalities which have never been seen or known to exist in reality; for how we live is so far removed from how we ought to live, that he who abandons what is done for what ought to be done, will rather bring about his own ruin than his preservation.
