Thus, setting into play the first day of a long and traumatic two-week period that changes the main characters lives dramatically. Their working environment is thrown into chaos when the IRS and FBI decide to investigate his money laundering activities.
This exposes the drug-trafficking and sexual activities of this ruthless egotistic gangster boss Chico Sanchez, his employees, and gangster associates.

His three hotels and casinos located in LA, Hong Kong and London UK are set up as legitimate leisure business centres. In reality, they are camouflaging his international drugs, prostitution, arms, money laundering, murder and protection rackets. As the story unfolds the characters reveal their changing positions and plan to protect themselves from the FBI and IRS investigations in this intense and violent criminal environment.

As the FBI move in, self-protection and fear amongst the major characters creates a euphoria of sex, drugs and murder.
Exposing the relentless activities of Chico and his drug baron associates. All very dangerous characters, as the FBI undercover agent is manhandled, escapes and runs for her life.

As new characters are introduced true love and romance develop out of the criminal business chaos in unexpected circumstances.
The main characters initially Chico’s personal staff learn to handle and cope with the organised criminal business setup. They cooperate with the FBI in exposing Chico’s gangster associates.
How they do it, and how they learn to finance and legitimise the business is the essence and the major part of this traumatic story. (Books 2and3). Ending with romantic and loving outcomes.

Steve Evans has taught literature and creative writing in universities, most recently as the Director of the Creative Writing Program at Flinders University. Introduction.

This is the first part of a gangster story, about corruption, murder and sex in real time, portraying the working lives of employees of the ruthless egotistic gangster boss Chico Sanchez.

His three hotels and casinos located in LA, Hong Kong and London UK are set up as a legitimate leisure business centers camouflaging his international drugs, prostitution, arms, money laundering, murder and protection rackets. As the story unfolds the characters reveal their positions, either loyalty, mistrust or retaliation. Thus creating a euphoria of sex, drugs, murder, money laundering, fraud and manipulation.

As the FBI moved in and clear out the drugs and money laundering activities Sofia and her office colleagues have to try to rebuild the hotels reputation and refinance the whole of the leisure business complex.

They have to become involved in the real world of business financing advertising and marketing the Hotel group to appeal to the right type of clientele. Professional prostitution and gambling legitimately becomes the hotels business and source of income.

True love and romance develops out of the past and business chaos in unexpected circumstances. The story ends with romantic and loving outcomes.

Chapter 1.

Day one. Sat March 20th.

Chico’s arrival.

The coloured neon lights of La’Casa Casino loomed up over the LA skyline, skyscraper roofs appeared below as Chico's helicopter slowly descended on to the hotel roof heliport. He’s met and helped from the helicopter by hotel manager Mel Hays, followed by Ricardo his bodyguard.

Handing a large briefcase to Mel he strides to the roof entrance, takes out his cell phone and makes a call as he proceeds through the hotels first floor offices. Nodding to his staff as he walks.

Chico Sanchez the boss of leisure group ‘Casa casino Inc’ arrives at his Hotel Casino. They walk into his office suite.

His P/A Gina greets him with an open file, following him to his desk. This needs your immediate attention. She says. He shouts to his cell phone, I want the arrival time today, call me back. Turning to her he asks, what's this? and swiftly takes the file from her hand. He slumps into his large tan leather chair that seemed to absorb him, opening the file he clicks on his computer.

Gina steps back from his desk and watches in anticipation as he thumbs the file, checking his computer his face shows anger as he looks up and quietly but aggressively says, Get Madam Sofia in here.

She hurriedly returns to her desk adjacent to his office and presses the intercom. A female voice answers, Yes Gina. she replies, Get Sofia quickly, as she watches Chico through the glass partition angrily thumbing through the file.

Sofia voice came over, Gina, what's up.

She answers what's up, big trouble, Chico's got the hostess cash accounts, Mel got them from Bastard Features and made me give them to him as soon as he arrived. I don't know what's in them, but he's furious and wants to see you now.

Sofia known throughout the group as Madam Sofia, tall, bobtail brunette, thirty-five-ish, elegant and very efficient. Now manages the three Escort Agencies and Hotel boutiques. She travels between the LA, Hong Kong and London Hotels. One-time mistress and confident in Chico's entourage, would not get involved or assist him in his drug and arms activities. Given the brothels to run and owning the hotel boutiques she protects her position and her girls by maintaining strict and legitimate executive control. She ignores his outside business activities and keeps her mouth shut.

But she has difficulty in dealing with the constant supply of drugs to the Casino's, they threaten her efforts to maintain the Hotels agency license. Aware of Chico's personal use of her girls, affects her emotionally, and stirs her lesbian tendencies. His constant sexual conquests create an underlying feeling of revulsion. Yet, she is concerned with her love hate feelings for him and constantly tries to repress her jealously. Her memories of her earlier days often surface when she sees him charming his way into the knickers of his latest fancy. He still excites her.

Hotel Manager Mel Hays carrying Chico's briefcase passes Gina's desk and asks. Has he got it.

Yes she replies. giving him a filthy look. And Sofia's on her way.

He continues into Chico's office. Mel is a tall, thin man with greying hair, smart and looks a typical manager. Heavily involved in Chico's business and enjoying the extra perks that his so-called loyalty earns.

Sofia wonders what the urgency is and stops at Gina's desk, who's in there?.

Mel, but Chico waiting for you. Sofia turns and walks into his office.

Mel is standing next to him tapping a keyboard as Chico looks up and flings the file to the front of his desk. Looking directly at Sofia in a low menacing voice, says. Who's massaging the figures then?

Ricardo moves closer to the window and looks out appearing to ignore the conversation.

She stops in front of the desk, looks at them both and exclaims. I don't know what you mean.

Well look at them, says Chico as he sweeps his arm across the files.

Sofia gingerly picks up the file and immediately notices that it’s a copy of the daily cash listings from her girls’ earnings.

What's the problem, she retorts, adding, this is collected every day at 12 noon by José.

How do you handle the cash? asks Mel.

We count it in lower bills first and stack it in one thousand-dollar bundles.

How is it collected? he continues, And who signs for it.

Sofia sighs, relieved that the problem isn't hers, stepping back she answers. You know, addressing Mel, José’s collects every day from all the till points. We pack it in his case together with a copy of the cash list.

Pausing she then adds, He signs the original cash list for the day and takes the money.

Where? growls Chico.

Sofia replies, To Mel's accounts office I presume.

Mel looks at Chico who turns and impatiently crooks is finger at her, he swivels his computer monitor towards her, beckons her forward and snarls. Are they the cash returns you collected yesterday.

Sofia heart jumps, the figures on the screen against each girl’s entry was much lower than the figures on file in front of her. Stay calm don't panic. she said to herself.

No, when the money leaves my reception desk we no longer have any responsibility for it.

Chico leans back and looks at Mel. Do you trust that little shit, José to collect your cash.

Yes, he collects from the restaurant, Casino and bars. He's Okay in the mornings but we don't see much of him in the afternoons.

Get him in here. retorts Chico.

José Altura, originally recruited from the streets of Mexico City became heavily involved in drugs and worked for the Familial drugs cartel. He broke away from the Cartel when Chico moved is operations to LA.

Now a virtual alcoholic, short stocky pan faced Mexican, featuring a flattened nose and mouth that curled round his right ear as he spoke (hence bastard features to all the girls). Originally Chico's protection collector/enforcer, now no longer in his favour and mentally incapable of any serious work. Now acts as a run around for Mel collecting and delivering files, mail and cash around the hotel. No relatives, no home, and lucky to live under the shadow of Chico.

He sat drinking in the Casino bar, hears Gina's voice over the intercom. Would José Altura please come to executive reception. Getting up to leave the barman calls him.

"Jos’e, what about your tab. It’s too high, no more till you pay. He turns and walks out of the bar, and mutters. Maybe tomorrow… and makes his way to Gina's desk.

The boss wants you in there now said Gina.

Who's in there with him? Asks Jose.

Go in and see.

José walks into the office, he is immediately confronted by Chico, Is this your copy of yesterday's cash receipts you collected from Madame Sofia.

Startled by the intensity of the question he turns and looks at Ricardo standing by the window.

Is it. Retorts Chico, as Mel picks up the file and gives it to him.

No, he looks down at the file. My copy always stays in the case and is given to Darren in accounts.

Who's is it then, continued Chico, turning to Mel. Get his copy from the accounts office, I want this sorted, now.

Sofia watched Mel as he hurried out the office. She wondered where this was going, knowing Chico she sensed his anger. She glanced over to Ricardo, he had now turned and was looking out of the window as if to distance himself from the discourse. José’ stood frozen to the spot, his face contorted trying to control the urge to run. He was scared as memories of Chico's Cartel activities and his part in handing out their so-called instant justice formed in is mind. No, he would admit nothing.

Chico's cell phone buzzed, Yea. As he listened he scribbled on his pad. at sea 3 weeks, fertiliser +3 loaded 2nd March Manzanillo ETA Hong Kong 12 noon 24th. Okay tell Captain Saiz I'll meet him there. He pockets his phone adding a note to his pad, HK Tuesday 23.

Mel phones Gina and tells her to put him through to Chico on an outside line. He tells her José has implicated Madam Sofia and he daren’t use the intercom. Gina not sure of the implications of this information and more concerned for Sofia says. Your through to Chico on line one.

Jos’e jumps as the intercom buzzes and stares intently at Chico as he answers.

Mel is on line one

He picks up the phone. yeah. Mel's voice comes over. I've checked with Darren on computer accounts. He’s been told by José that his receipted copies of the Agencies daily cash file must be returned to Madam Sofia. He will collect them for her when they have been entered. Chico looks at José and tells Mel. get back here with Darren.

So, Madam Sofia has the copies after all. Said Chico, Where are they, I want them here, now. Looking at her and José.

Sofia glancing at José, exclaims. "We don't have or need
