    Jaxson Metz had been brushing his teeth for a little over an hour.  Or rather, if RealTime mattered at all, the ReDoo’s would have added up to an hour or so.  As it was, in SliceTime, he had only expended a couple of minutes, but the one stubborn fleck of plaque that he’d been struggling to remove was gone.  He wondered how many times he’d redone his tooth brushing.  I mean altogether , he thought.  It must be thousands. 

    It didn’t matter.  All that mattered was perfection.

    Since the invention of the Personal Life Slice, everyone in the world lived a literal perfect life.  You were born, and for your first twelve years, you lived in the care of the Central Control as a Norm.  Norms lived totally in RealTime.  On your thirteenth birthday, you got your Slice.  Jaxson thought back to how things had been when he was a Norm.  It sucked.  Life without ReDoo and Slicing— he shuddered—just not worth living.

    Slicing did have consequences.  You had to remember your ReDoos.  SliceTime was brain real-time.  Your brain had to maintain memory, so
