    This is not the choice I wanted you to make. Rekaré could hear Cenarth’s voice as clearly as if he were standing next to her right now instead of at their farewell several days ago. How many days had it been? As she lay in her bedroll, staring up at the brilliant stars overhead, she couldn’t say for sure. Everything blurred together. The last clear thing she could remember was loading onto the deck of the Morning Star in Medvare-the-city. Vengeance had been on her mind then, vengeance for the deaths of her mother Alicira and her daughter Melarae, plus the attack on her Heartfather Heinmyets and Secondmother Inharise.

    Still, she tried to count the days.

    A day and a half on the Morning Star upriver. That part was clear. Then things blurred again. How long had it taken to reach her Heartfather and Secondmother? Had it only taken them one day to catch up with their attackers? She remembered the battle—where she had truly earned the title Rekaré Kinslayer—and resigning the Leadership of Medvara.
