To my wife Anita, without whose support and encouragement I could never have written this book.
1.
Steve James felt like he was walking on air. That evening he`d been on a first date with his new girl-friend Laura Jenkins. He`d taken her to the cinema, where they`d seen Mission Impossible Fallout. This was an action spy film with Tom Cruise, and was the sixth in the Mission Impossible series. They thought that the action sequences and stunts were tremendous, and they`d both enjoyed the film. Afterwards Steve had given Laura a lift home in his old Ford focus, and they`d agreed that they must go out together again soon.
Steve was just nineteen years old and an apprentice brick-layer. He still lived at home with his parents, but hoped that when he`d completed his apprenticeship, that he`d be able to save a bit of money, and maybe get his own place. Laura was Steve`s first girl-friend, and he couldn`t believe his luck when she agreed to go out with him. She was eighteen years old, with long blonde hair and blue eyes, and was absolutely gorgeous. At least she was in Steve`s eyes anyway.
Laura texted Steve to tell him how much she had enjoyed the evening, which left him with a great big smile on his face when he went to sleep that night.
The next evening Steve was playing in a darts match, as he did every Thursday. He played for the local pub, the Red Lion, and two of his best mates were also in the team. Paul Holland was nineteen years old, and Pete Robson 20, and they both worked for the same local firm, Greens Rubber Mouldings. The three of them had been friends for years, and besides darts, they were all mad keen on football. All three of them supported Nottingham Forest, and they often went to watch them play at the City Ground. Steve and Paul also played for the local team Helperton Town, in the Sunday league. Pete would have liked to play for that team too. He had played for them two or three times, but unfortunately he wasn`t good enough, or dedicated enough, to play regularly.
The darts match didn`t start well. Nigel Sharpe was just seventeen, and was playing his first ever game for the Red Lion, so understandably he was rather nervous, and lost. Fortunately Steve won the second game to make it 1-1, and when Pete won to make it 2-1, things were looking good. It got a bit tense however, when Paul lost his game. It was now 2-2, and everything depended on the final game. Mike Scroves was playing that game, and was the team’s captain. He was forty-eight years of age, much older than the others, and his experience told, when he managed to hit double sixteen, to win not only that game, but the match too, and they all cheered. Steve didn`t live far from the pub, and had walked there, so not having to worry about driving, he decided to stay for another couple of pints with his mates, to celebrate. He left just before half-past ten, and as he walked home, he texted Laura to tell her about the darts victory. She seemed really pleased for him, and he asked if she`d like to go out for a drink the following night, which was a Friday, so neither of them would have to work the next day.
‘I`d love to.’ Laura replied, and they agreed to meet at the pub at eight o`clock.
On Friday evening, they both arrived ten minutes early. Steve found them a table in the corner and then went to the bar to get some drinks. Laura decided to have a brandy and lemonade, and Steve had a pint of lager, which he carried back to the table. The two of them talked about all sorts of things, including hobbies, Laura`s sisters, holidays that they`d been on, their work, and they found that they got on really well. They were both very interested in music, and Steve suggested that they go to see a local band the following weekend. The band were playing in a pub at Thornton, which was about ten miles or so from Helperton, and Steve had seen them once before, when they`d played there the previous February, and he told Laura how good they were. They were enjoying themselves so much, that the time just flew by, and before they knew it, last orders were being called. Steve couldn`t drive Laura home, because he`d been drinking of course, so they walked along Main Street, looking for a taxi. They soon saw one driving towards them, so Steve flagged it down. Laura gave Steve a quick kiss goodnight, and thanked him for a lovely evening, before she was driven away, and Steve walked home, once again with a great big smile on his face.
Laura`s parents were watching television, and waiting for her at home. They lived in a big four-bedroomed detached house, in a quiet cul-de-sac, just outside of Helperton, which was a couple of miles or so from the pub. Laura`s dad Brian, was forty-one years old, and worked as a mechanic. He was five feet eleven tall, with dark hair, although it was now starting to go thin on top. He was rather overweight, but he loved his daughters dearly, and they all thought of him as their great big cuddly teddy bear. Laura`s mum, Sarah, was forty years old, and worked as a cashier at Tesco. She was five feet five tall, with blonde hair and blue eyes, just like her three daughters. Their other two children, Ruth who was 16 and Davina who was 15, were already upstairs in bed, but Sheila wanted to make sure that Laura was home safe, before she turned in herself. Sarah had expected Laura to be home by half past eleven at the latest, so
