About this ebook
Maddened, the ape-man seeks revenge not only on the perpetrators of the tragedy but all Germans, and sets out for the battle front of the war in east Africa. On the way he has a run-in with a lion (or Numa, as it is called by the apes among whom Tarzan was raised), which he traps in a gulch by blocking the entrance. At the front he infiltrates the German headquarters and seizes Major Schneider, the officer he believes led the raid on his estate. Returning to the gulch, he throws his captive to the lion. Tarzan goes on to help the British in the battle in various ways, including setting the lion loose in the enemy trenches, and kills von Goss, another German officer involved in the attack on the Greystoke estate...
Edgar Rice Burroughs
Edgar Rice Burroughs (1875-1950) had various jobs before getting his first fiction published at the age of 37. He established himself with wildly imaginative, swashbuckling romances about Tarzan of the Apes, John Carter of Mars and other heroes, all at large in exotic environments of perpetual adventure. Tarzan was particularly successful, appearing in silent film as early as 1918 and making the author famous. Burroughs wrote science fiction, westerns and historical adventure, all charged with his propulsive prose and often startling inventiveness. Although he claimed he sought only to provide entertainment, his work has been credited as inspirational by many authors and scientists.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Quite a bit longer than the previous six books, but thoroughly enjoyable. I really loved the supporting characters in this book. The English officer and the German spy made for a very interesting dynamic. The city of the lunatics was a bit strange, but still well defined and gave you a real sense if creepiness as you read it.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Onne of his earlier novels, ERB keeps the reader entertained, and provides us with a city of idiots. Not one to b e denied imagination though it tampers with the author's credulity, he has us visit a city of gold and exquisite art stuck in the middle of the African jungle. The citizens of the city worship parrots, and I think someone ought to give Burrough's the bird.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5As reported by my husband, this book is racist and sexist. He read all the previous books, but this one proved too much. Yes, we know how times have changed - I am reporting his comments here.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5In which Tarzan makes some German's really suffer (it is WWI) and adventures in the trackless depths of Africa to find another lost city.
