    Unleashed - John Toublaris

    you.

    CHAPTER 1

CRUSH COMPLACENCY AND BOOST YOUR MOTIVATION

The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out your why.

    - Mark Twain

Dreaming is the picture we see and the music we hear when the desires of our heart orchestrates the things yet to come.

    - Cliff Baird, PhD

Many years ago, in my early twenties, during my selling career, I remember being pulled in so many different directions, with get-rich-quick opportunities being introduced to me every day. I would chase these opportunities from left to right and all over the place.

Since I was living in my parents' basement—35 lbs overweight; $120,000 in debt, with maxed out credit cards and creditors calling me daily; collection agency letters being sent to my parents' home every month, while my commissions were garnished—I was always fascinated by these get-rich-quick opportunities, so I wouldn't have to prospect to find real estate clients.

At this point in my life, I was so discouraged about going to work, so I was looking for that magic pill that would solve everything overnight and pay off the $120,000 debt that I owed.

My mind was so polluted with negative thoughts, self-doubt, and feelings of insecurity, that all I could think about was enjoying late night parties, seven nights a week. This was definitely more exciting than thinking about paying off the $120,000 of debt, and this allowed me to mask the pain of my low self-worth.

The more you resist something, the more something persists.

    - Carl Jung

    The Ride of My Life

One cold winter Saturday afternoon in December, in Toronto, with only $80 left to my name, $120,000 in debt, and being overweight, I remember driving my old Toyota Corolla, with a good friend of mine, George. George was a successful entrepreneur, and I respected him and his financial success. George knew I was in this financial turmoil, and I remember asking him, George, what has made you so successful?

He turned to me and replied with, John, I just focus all my attention on one thing and do it well. In fact, I focus on my strengths. I also have partners that I surround myself with that don't let me get off the hook. I have a responsibility daily to perform at a high level; otherwise, everyone else suffers as well.

Right in that moment, it hit me like the proverbial ton of bricks.

I pulled the car over and started sharing with him that I had not been taking responsibility for myself and my life. I was more focused on being a victim of my circumstances rather than taking action. I got present that it was time I stopped playing Russian roulette with my life and get into action immediately.

When you take 100% responsibility, your life will change because you have the power to do something about it rather than waiting for someone to do something about it for you.

He then asked me, What are you good at that you can focus on? I replied with, Well, I am great working my database; however, I have been neglecting it for the longest time. I am afraid of what they will think of me if I call them after so long.

Since I realized that taking responsibility gives me the power to do something about my situation, the very next month I began calling my database. I let go of the false stories and assumptions that I created in my mind about what others would think of me, and I got present to the impact that this behavior and tolerance has had on me. I also got present to what this behavior has been costing me financially, and more importantly, how it was impacting me mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. I was financially and emotionally bankrupt at this point; however, I got clear for what I wanted moving forward.

When you have a strong enough WHY, you can accomplish any HOW

Right at that moment in December, I declared on the spot: Next year is going to be the best year of my selling career! In fact, in my first quarter, I will hit a six-figure income, from January to March, and provide an incredible amount of value to the people I know.

So, what did I do? Well, every day, I would write down this statement, several times a day:

I have already earned a $100,000 in gross commission by March 31st.

The key word here is, already.

While I would write this out, I would imagine all the wonderful things that would happen in my life once I reached that amount. You will notice that I used the word, already. I was training my mind to realize that it has already been accomplished.

Why was I pulled by this creation?

Well, I wanted to get out of the financial mess that I was in, and I wanted to progress into a fulfilled, happier life for myself, so that I could do more for myself, and feel proud of the person that I wanted to become. I got clear on that!

Change happens when the pain of staying the same is greater than the pain of change.

    - Anthony Robbins

After calling my entire database, and prospecting other sources, by mid-March, that was accomplished!

I generated $100,000 in gross commissions within two and half months!

For some people, it may not seem like a lot of money; however, for me, it sure was! This gave me so much confidence, freedom, and peace of mind that I began to make credit card payments, and to call collection agencies, and the Canada Revenue Agency to pay off my taxes, and to give back to friends the money that I owed. I felt so good about myself. My self-esteem elevated, and I felt so worthy about myself. And YES! I did pay off the entire $120,000; and I hired a personal trainer and got physically fit too!

    How did this happen?

Well, it is not a matter of how; it was my WHY that propelled me to the victory I had been thinking about day and night, non-stop, for months. My WHY was to be financially empowered, so that I could be, do, and have anything and everything I want. It would excite me thinking about it. This was a short-term goal that helped boost my motivation to achieve a stunning accomplishment for myself.

Success is the progressive realization of a worthwhile ideal.

    - Earl Nightingale

    Raising My Standard of Living

When I began to take responsibility, and got into action, my real estate business started to grow quickly. Later that year, another good friend of mine, Peter, said to me, Okay, John, you closed on $100,000 in a quarter. What is next? When are you getting rid of that Toyota and getting yourself a brand-new car?

I started to fret and completely forgot to set a new goal rather than rest on my laurels. Therefore, it is important to surround yourself with people who will hold you accountable and have you raise your standards. Side note: I have an entire chapter, in this book, on terminating and building new, healthy relationships.

Who in your life is holding you accountable to raise your standards and create the business you want?

Next, I declared that I would get myself a new 328 xi BMW. Peter said to me, Okay, so what is the next step? From that moment on, I cut out an image of the BMW and posted it on my dream board, which was a collage of other images of the things I wanted to have in my life. This included a healthy relationship with myself and my family, which means a lot to me.

I also took a BMW keychain and put it on my existing keychain, even though I didn't have the car—yet. I behaved in a way as though I already had it, acting as if I already had it in my possession. You see, your subconscious mind doesn't know the difference between reality and imagination.

Trigger your imagination and spark your motivation.

    - John Toublaris

Next, I was invited to a BMW VIP party, in which my friend was involved. He brought me along as a guest. I sat in the car, smelled the beautiful leather, touched the luxurious, quality material, and even went on a test drive. At this point, my desire was multiplying, and I was getting even more energized. Guess what happened months later? I drove off the lot with my new car! I was so happy and couldn't believe it. Thoughts do become things when you focus on them with so much attention. A few years later, I did the same exercise on myself, and I attracted a beautiful, metallic grey, brand new C300 Mercedes, which I drive today.

What you think about, you bring about.

    - Rhonda Byrne

    Traveling with Freedom

While I was driving in my new wheels one day, I booked my ticket to go to the Cayman Islands—later to Vegas, and a year later, to the Greek islands! If you haven't been to the Greek islands, I highly recommend it! I also travelled to see the Grand Canyon; I drove down the California coast in a beautiful, bright red Mustang convertible, singing Hotel California, by the Eagles; I enjoyed time in Florida, went to visit my friend in Belize, then drove up to Playa Del Carmen, and Tulum, in Mexico; and many other places. Life is fun!

    It didn't stop there.

Several months later, I went to the Hugo Boss store and upgraded my wardrobe completely, buying new Boss suits, shirts, ties, shoes, and a plethora of other accessories. That year was completely magical and unbelievable. What I had accomplished was amazing. It was my best financial year up to date. This is now a completely new life for me.

    Views from the Sky

A year later, I was dreaming about living in a beautiful, corner-unit condo, with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city of Toronto, while I am coaching my real estate agent clients. That is all I could think about. I posted an image on my vision board and searched online to find such a condo. It was sudden; I got the first condo I went to take a look at. This was because I was so crystal clear on what I wanted, which kept me feeling good; and since I kept focusing on that, and I knew what I wanted, I got what I was thinking about. This is the key. Once you get clear on what you want, you want to feel good thinking about that.

Let's go back and review how all this happened for me:

    1. I let go of being a victim in my life and took 100% responsibility.

    2. I got clear on what I wanted and declared it to myself and others.

    3. I kept focusing on one thing until I got what I wanted. I became obsessed to get it.

    4. I wrote down what I wanted, daily, as if accomplished, and thought about it from morning to night.

    5. I surrounded myself with people who have what I wanted, and they held me accountable.

    6. As soon as I accomplished one goal, I immediately created another short-term goal. When I can clearly see what I want, and know I can achieve it, my desire and motivation soars. Never stand
