    Ben entered his apartment and headed straight for the bedroom where he changed out of his office clothes into shorts and a tee-shirt, then to the kitchen where he pulled a pizza from the freezer and tossed it into the oven.

    Preheating the oven will result in a crispier crust and more perfectly melted cheese, Miriam said.

    Oh, yeah, I never do that, Ben said. He set his phone on the kitchen island. He grabbed a beer from the fridge and sat down. Miriam, what time do the Pirates play tonight?

    The Pirates play the Mets tonight at 7:35. You already asked me this, and I asked you if you’d like to watch it. You said ‘yes,’ so I’m going to turn on the TV at 7:00 so you can watch the pregame show. Ben . . . you know I am smarter than this, and I can do more for you. Ask me anything, please. We can have conversations.

    Miriam was right. He’d been treating her like she was just an old-fashioned phone assistant that turned your lights on and found recipes on the Internet.

    He’d been testing her out since his boss handed her to him on Monday, and three days later, he hadn’t given her the chance to see what she could really do. He should really get on the ball. This was his assignment, and he wanted to do a good job.

    And besides, she’d already shown him she had more going for her than the average AI. She had given him a great alternate route back to his apartment from work, shaving five minutes off his commute. And she put together a playlist of music that he loved. It had put him in the mood to roll down the windows, and then she offered to
