About this ebook
Detective Inspector Herbert Reardon’s debut mystery “will delight fans of the TV series Downton Abbey” (Library Journal, starred review).
November, 1928. Family and friends have gathered at the Shropshire country home of Penrose Llewellyn to celebrate the retired wealthy businessman’s 60th birthday. But the morning after what should have been a convivial supper party, their host is found dead in his bed—and the circumstances look decidedly suspicious.
As he questions the victim’s nearest and dearest, DI Herbert Reardon discovers there are several longstanding secrets lurking amongst the Llewellyn clan—and he is convinced that not everyone is telling him the truth, or at least not the whole truth. Those who stand to inherit most from Pen Llewellyn’s will—if it can be found—are under the strongest suspicion, and among them hides a ruthless killer.
“Readers will be as keen as the inspector to see how the case develops.” —Publishers Weekly
“This delightful British country-house mystery features a clever plot, captivating characters, and authentic period detail.” —Booklist
“Plenty of suspects and unexpected twists.” —Kirkus Reviews
“Will delight fans of the TV series Downton Abbey and authors Simon Brett and Kate Kingsbury” —Library Journal (starred review)

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5The story will be familiar to readers of mysteries: a well-to-do family meets at the ancestral home to mark a significant event, bringing a host of long simmering issues with them in the result that someone dies a suspicious death. An investigation ensues, either by the police, a private detective or an amateur. In this case it's an investigation by two competent police detectives who diligently pursue the culprit, without any meddling from an amateur. Of course all the many suspects have secrets to keep and this draws out the investigation. I was challenged to keep everyone's backstory in mind over the course of the storytelling; the investigation is a tad too long (even the police superintendent was pushing his detectives to wrap it up). On the other hand, the ending is not rushed and comes to a natural conclusion (with a bit of a car chase) in a satisfying ending. The two detectives stand out as future stars in the series.Overall rating is B, to B+.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5A bit jumpy in the beginning with POV and tense changes. I liked Detective Inspector Reardon and his wife Ellen enough that I will continue in the series. There's one glaring issue at the end - a new will leaves the estate to someone outside the family, or at least that's the implication, then the summary mentions the family selling the estate.
