    GLOSSARY OF TERMS

    MEETING OF CREDITORS: This is the Court date. It is scheduled on either a Tuesday or Thursday between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.

    CHAPTER 13 TRUSTEE: A Trustee is a member of the Justice Department and is the person who conducts the Meeting of Creditors and either approves or rejects the plan.

    SECURED DEBT: A secured debt is one that is secured by an item that can be taken by a creditor, such as a car, house, furniture, boat, or motorcycle.

    UNSECURED DEBT: An unsecured debt is one that is not secured by the above-mentioned items and can be discharged in bankruptcy, such as credit cards, medical and dental bills, or Court judgments.

    PRIORITY DEBT: A priority debt is a debt such as some taxes, child support, Court fees and fines, and some student loans that cannot be discharged in bankruptcy.

    DISCHARGE: A discharge is a legal document that relieves the person filing bankruptcy of the legal obligation to repay most debts.

    AUTOMATIC STAY: An automatic stay stops creditors from continuing efforts to collect or enforce the collection of secured or unsecured debts through Court action or garnishments. It also stops all other Court actions such as personal injury cases and divorce actions.

    MEANS TEST: This is a test based on a person’s income. If that income exceeds the state-mandated median income of the family size, a means
