The Teaching of Thomas: Given Through Madys Mary

About this ebook
Madys Mary Bannister Sloane
Madys Mary has lived well in two complementary worlds, material and spiritual. She began to explore her psychic ability after a near-death experience while she was ill with typhoid fever at age four. Her parents had psychic abilities and were open to discussions of them as she was growing up. She had a Christian upbringing; university training in art and anthropology; a graduate school psychology degree; lived in Asia, Europe, and North America; has friendships with the Dalai Lama and Geshe Sopa; and had séances with mediums such as Leslie Flint. Her relationship with her spirit guide, Thomas, began in a meditation-class vision as a young woman. She had a private psychotherapy practice in Mexico and was called the best medium there. In these and many other situations, Thomas would come to Madys Mary to help her and others.

Finding Peace Within
Today we would like to ask how peace is to come to the world when it doesn’t even exist between two people or in a family. The only way it can come is when people look for it inside themselves, so finding it is an important task.
We ask everyone to sit and meditate on inner peace even if it is only five or ten minutes every day. Look for this inner part, this clear light, and once you have found it, emanate love so that it can reach all people. Just as people with grace emanate love and compassion, it is essential that people find peace, find this clear light state. Therefore, we ask you to meditate because if you are able to remain in this state, the spirit guides, the forces of light, are able to reach and help you. When you have lost this state and your mind is being pulled in many directions, it is very difficult for these forces of light to reach you. It is only with inner peace that the world will also have peace.
We also need peace in religions. No war should be started in the name of religion. For instance, no war has ever been started in the name of the Buddha. This is so because Buddhism is truly a peaceful religion, as is Christianity. Unfortunately, men have used Christianity for their own self-seeking. They go to war with the name of God or Christ on their lips, when the point that religions make is that there should be love. This is the similarity that you will find in religions—that there should be love for all humanity—yet it seems to be difficult for people to love each other. It seems almost impossible for them to tame their minds to a point where they can feel love and compassion for everyone. This has been said many times before. It is not an easy path. For some people, one way will be easier than another, but the important thing is to find the peace within and try to keep this state of mind. From this point of light, send love to mankind.
There is a great deal of unhappiness in this world because everyone has an appointment to be happy at some future date, when they acquire more money, more understanding, a car, a lover, a trip. Happiness is regarded as coming from the outside, as being connected to something or to someone.
Also disturbing is the fact that most people consciously or unconsciously feel that their happiness comes before that of others, and you can see it in their actions. First, my happiness, then other people’s happiness. My happiness,
as they say to themselves, comes from the things that I can buy, from someone else who can make me happy.
How difficult it is for you. You are taught to love everyone, and yet you cannot help being repelled by the actions of others. It almost seems like a paradox. However, it is just reaching this place within and training the mind so that peace will come to you, and then you will understand this universal love, which will lead you to happiness. This will enable you to see people as they really are, and even if you cannot always approve of their actions, you will be able to recognize the divine spark that we all have within. You will also see that happiness that comes from these outside things will not last. As we have said, it is not easy to remain in this state of mind. It is a very difficult task, and it does require meditation or being alone for a little while every day so that you can renew this contact with the light within. Every human being has the right to happiness. We would also say that fear comes from the outside and is most destructive, but once you have reached this light within, your fears will begin to dissolve. It is often feelings such as fear and greed that separate humans from each other.
Once there is peace on earth, mankind should turn to looking after the earth itself and doing this with love. Once love emanates from this place within, things will be easier because we will be able to help you more, and this love will reach the earth, and it will be healthier.
When you are trying to find peace within, it is essential that it be a real integration and not a mask that you put on. It is the acceptance of your whole personality. Once you have found this inner place, it will also give you self-confidence. As we have said, fear comes from the outside. If you are acting from the inside, you will no longer be affected by fear because you have found this integration, which is a part of all mankind. This is the plane that can connect with all humanity. This connection is most important, especially in your meditations. It is very important to find this place within where you are united to every thing that is.
This connection should be of love; it links you to all sentient beings and to the earth, and when you have found this part within you, you can then take your place in the world. It is this emanation of connectedness and love that will draw humanity towards you.
You will emanate light, and the moment you walk in a room, people will be attracted to you, and you will find yourself guided on to the right path. This will make your life easier and happier.
Letting Go of the Past and Getting on with Your Life
Today I would like to speak about psychology in the sense that too many people are blaming their childhood and are not going forward as they should. As many people have said, you are responsible for yourself. You are not held back by the love you didn’t receive as a child but by the love that you are not giving now. People complain that their parents did not understand them. Perhaps it is better for that person to understand his or her parents. I am not speaking about abusive parents who are in what you could call an animal incarnation. They will take many incarnations to redeem that abuse. It is very difficult for the child and could take a whole lifetime to recover from it. However, today I am not speaking about abusive parents; I am speaking about the average parent trying to do their best.
It is far better to look back at your childhood as a positive thing and see what advantages you received rather than constantly be complaining about what your parents did to you. Try to see the positive things your parents gave to you, try to understand them, and if necessary, forgive them. Love the child that you were. See the child that you were and love this child. It is then possible for you to go forward in this life, giving love to the whole world instead of stagnating. It is most important to always be learning and moving forward.
It is very negative for people’s development to constantly be saying to their parents, Look what you did to me… you did this, and you did that,
rather than try to grow in understanding. See your parents as human beings; see the love that has been bestowed on you. As everyone is living through their karma, it is really the responsibility of the person to say Well, I must get through this karma as well as possible, I must go forward, not backward. I have had a bad relationship with someone. Let me see what I can do about it in the future. Let me not always dwell on it.
Sometime in your life, it may be necessary or even important to confront someone. This confrontation must always be without anger. Once it has been done, that is the end of it, and you must go forward. Karmically speaking, you were born into the family that was the right family for you.
AA (Arlene Arias): Even the ones with abuse, Thomas?
Thomas: Parental abuse is a retrograde situation, going back to an animal state. It is very, very difficult. It can be a karmic case of a child who was a person that abused someone or can just be cruelty of man to man. Just as with wars, you cannot say This war was caused by karma.
Some of the cruelty, which is happening today, is not necessary and is regressive. It is something that has to be seen and stopped through education and other means so that the child knows that he or she can be protected. Very often, in the case of abuse, the child feels as if it is his or her fault. They feel different to other children and do not love themselves, or they feel that they are keeping this awful secret. So it is necessary, almost, to go back and nurture this child and give it love. For a child, these things are very difficult to understand. Therefore, education is very important. However, what we are talking about today is the average person who has not been abused but is blaming the parents for what they themselves are not accomplishing in their lives. They continue to relive their childhood, saying, Well, my father did this, my mother did the other,
and they feel that this gives them a very good excuse to not go further on the path and become a brilliant, shining being.
When you look at it, how many people came from perfect homes? Practically nobody came from a perfect home or a really functional one. So it is something that you learn from, and you go ahead with your life. We find that it is important for the healing profession to go back, somewhat, to find the child within the person so that the person can love the child that they were. But then that should be the end of it. It has passed.
It is very important to try to understand your parents as people. If necessary, forgive them. Look back on past mistakes as learning situations. Do not use the past as a big stone in the middle of your path. It is a delicate balance. Some people cling to their parents and cannot let them go; other people blame their parents. We find that if people will sit quietly, they will find that there are many stumbling blocks in their lives. They themselves have put these large stones in their pathway, but these stones can be dissolved with love. For example, a person will say, I always have bad relationships.
They are putting this block of always in front of them. They have not put the past behind themselves and are still carrying this heavy load on their shoulders. What they should be doing is simply giving love to the present. Become a loving person in the present; do not carry around all this baggage.
How many people, when told they can do this or that, answer Yes, but…
We are trying to say get rid of the Yes, but.
We would like people to say I am strong. I am full of light, and I am full of love. No situation is too difficult for me to get through. I will try to get through it with as much love as I can give, as much compassion as I can give. I will try to keep my inner core, my sacred space filled with peace so that I may continue on my way in harmony. I have learned from the past, but it is no longer a burden to me. Every day is a new beginning, a renewal. Every day I can go further in my life.
People sit and expect things to be given to them, happiness to be given to them, and it is they who should be going forward and learning as much as possible in this incarnation. All this has been said before, and it may seem simplistic to you. However, if during meditation or at any quiet time people would sit very quietly and just look at the stumbling blocks that they are putting in front of themselves and then leave them behind, they would be very much healed. This is true not only from childhood or adolescence but the recent past, such as a bad marriage or whatever. If they could just see what they are projecting onto their lives and onto other people, it would clear their path to start anew with understanding, love, and peace.
Do not put these large blocks in your path; do not constantly reflect on what has been done to you. Instead, break through this block with love, saying, They were human beings. I must try to understand them. I must free myself from this so that I can go ahead with love and compassion.
If there has been a quarrel with someone, try to understand this person; try to get rid of the resentment. Do not let them abuse you, but get past the resentment. Don’t keep going back over the past; just go forward. It will make life a great deal easier for you, and after all, what you have come here to do is to learn to refine your spirit more and more. This constant rehashing of the past will not refine your spirit; it will only hold you back. It is so liberating to go ahead with love. Let the little voice at the back of your mind stop you when you are perpetuating these situations. Open the doors, walk out on the roadway like a pilgrim into the light and into the love, which is always there, waiting for you.
At some point, people who have had terrible childhoods may become more enlightened and be able to forgive and look back and say, These poor, wretched creatures, I give them compassion, and this will be true spirituality. On the other hand, it has been a learning experience, but I will not let this happen again.
Go forward,
