    Introduction

Lillian was a girl from a small nuclear family of four. Her father worked with the foreign affairs department which made travelling to other countries very easy. His job made provision for him to live outside his country for some years.

Lillian and her brother happened to be the only children of their parents, which made life a lot easy for her because she had her needs met as and when due. Lillian was the envy of her friends, especially when they were back home in Nigeria. This is not unconnected with the fact that very few people have the opportunity to travel every summer and come back with new clothes and other items.

She was also the toast of her parents, especially her father who said that Lillian not only reminded him of his mother with her physical looks but also gave him a lot of joy because of her brilliant performance at every examination she wrote. Throughout her primary and secondary school days, Lillian topped her class. Her performance was not any less during external examination because she made her school come tops.

Before she turned sixteen, Lillian gained admission into the university. At the end of the first semester, she did not perform less than expected because she got straight As in all the courses she sat for. Not only did she excel academically, but also she had a good number of admirers. Some just liked her because of her exceptional brilliant academic performance. Out of the lot that were flocking around her for friendship, she was quite attracted to a guy whose name was Peter.

Before long, they became very good friends. Lillian saw Peter as a brother, friend, confidant, reading partner, and all you can think of.

By the middle of the second semester, the once-very-vibrant toast of all was now withdrawn and very dull, no longer a joy to behold. She only participated in class when called upon, and she did it with little or no interest. Sometimes she did not even show up for lectures. At the end of that semester, not only was her academic performance poor, Lillian had failed two out of the six courses she sat for and had barely passed the other four, but also it was shocking to everybody who knew her, especially her parents. This became a trend, and Lillian spent six years to obtain a degree that normally lasted four years.

Lillian was the least bothered about her poor performance, but sooner than later, the once-very-homely girl was a far cry from her usual self. All attempts to make Lillian open up proved abortive. She no longer saw anything good in life. She withdrew from Peter, her brother, and even her parents. She was always indoors whenever she was on vacation. Lillian’s parents could not fathom what had happened to their once-very-lively-and-intelligent daughter.

What happened to Lillian? Why did this once-vibrant, brilliant, and very loving girl just stop being who she used to be?

This is just one of those cases of people with great potential who got to a point in their lives and ceased to be. They begin to live in their own shadows, keeping those who once knew them in suspense. In this book, we shall be looking at some real people, with lots of talent and intelligence, from good backgrounds that went through challenges and stopped moving. Some gave in, while others forged ahead and went through. We shall unravel some factors that can bring a destiny to a halt and factors that can possibly help to achieve their destiny.

    Meet Abigail

Now the name of the man was Nabal, and the name of his wife was Abigail. She was a woman of good understanding and of beautiful countenance.(1)

The two outstanding words used to describe Abigail are as follows:
