    Slimy Celebrations

Deep in the forest, the wind whistles as it weaves through the trees, leaves gently rustling in its wake. The bubbling creeks meander far below. The pinstripes of the sun’s rays dance along the ground. The smell of eucalyptus touches the air lightly, feeling its way further afield in the fresh ocean breeze.

There is nowhere in the world like Australia.

Many people know Australia, but they don’t know about Frazer Glazia, the land of dreams and magic. It is the last city of fairies.

Frazer Glazia existed long before Captain Cook arrived on the shores of Australia. It existed way back when the Aborigines ruled the land.

We are not sure where the fairies came from or how they came to be in Frazer Glazia, but the elders’ stories tell us they have been here for a very long time.

The little Frazer fairies live deep in the forest in the far north of Queensland. Some live in caves, and others, over the years, have moved into the hollows of the giant red cedar tree and the cathedral fig tree.

Singing—so sweet—echoes through the entrance of the Frazer Glazia cave. "I flutter, sing and dance, I wish, I wish, I wish. I can backflip and sing so beautifully, flip, sing and fliiiiipppp—"

Bang! Splat! Little Tahzia, nine years old and extremely clumsy, flies into a cluster of gilled fungi mushrooms, bounces back onto a slide of moss—Wheeeee—then skates down the winding surface of the rocks, trying to hold on to her wings so they don’t get damaged, squealing as eventually she splashes into a puddle of slime.

Slowly she sits up, hair tattered and party dress covered in slimy green moss. She raises her hand cautiously to find the Santa Claus flower she was holding is broken and missing all its wishing seeds. Oh no, Tahzia whispers with a sigh. I didn’t get time to make a wish. She tries her wings, opening them one at a time. Oh, thank goodness my wings are okay.

Giggles emerge from above as Bosco and Holly flutter over her. Wow! Can you do that again? says eleven-year-old Bosco cheekily. See? That’s what happens when you show off.

Yes, you’re such a show-off, sweet little five-year-old Holly sniggers.

    puddle.tif

Tahzia flaps her hands and sighs again, looking down at her favourite party dress. I’m such a mess. I’m going to be in so much trouble.

Bosco and Holly flutter down next to her. Come on, sis, urges Bosco, trying not to laugh. Grab our hands, and we’ll help you.

They fly Tahzia over to the waterfall where the Ulysses butterflies play in the breeze and where sometimes you can see the platypuses playing with their young.

Bosco grabs a fallen gum nut from the ground and fills it with water to pour over Tahzia’s head and wings, while Holly tries to remove the slime from her hair with a small bottlebrush flower. In the distance, they can hear their mother, the queen of Frazer Glazia, calling out to them. With his tiny fingers, Bosco shreds off a few thin strips of bark from a paperbark tree and uses them to wipe Tahzia’s wings and dry her hair. Paperbark strips work well
