PART ONE
We entered the Sheraton Hotel from the Pike Street and Sixth Avenue entrance. My friend Ken Black did not really know the reasons I decided to return home to Seattle so soon. We had driven all the way from Lethbridge, a twelve hour drive, for him to enjoy summer in Seattle. For me though this was home. I had just lost my house and I wanted a new beginning, a new life after being laid off from my job of 15 years.
Ken was born in England. We are friends, very good friends. We first met in England at Cambridge University several years ago and have kept in touch ever since. Ken had a steady job as a project manager at Lethbridge Business IT, I had recently lost my job in Seattle, Washington. It was 2003, and the events of the September 11th attacks had created a big change to the Travel Industry. Although my company was one of the largest travel corporations in the U.S, it folded like it was a home-based agency. Survival became hard; slowly most of its branches were closing doors and finally the headquarters that housed two floors in downtown Seattle closed its doors also. I was stranded. It was hard to lose a job that I had invested in for such a number of years.
During his stay in Canada, Ken and I were always in touch from emails to phone calls. After losing my job, Ken invited me to visit him for two weeks, which I did. This was really good for me. It is hard to adjust when you are retrenched. A lot of people lose hope and stay home without looking for the next opportunity. Doing that is committing suicide, especially when you have children. Sometimes it is good to have a friend, like Ken, who can think of you especially when you are going through tough life experiences.
On my return from Canada, I asked Ken to come with me back to Seattle. Initially, he didn’t want to but I managed to convince him. So one day when Ken came home from work, he wasn’t alone. He came with his fiancée, Jennifer. He told me that day that we were not going to go to our drinking pub at Mayor Magrath Best Western Hotel, instead his fiancée would prepare dinner for us. While Jennifer was busy in the kitchen, He told me that he had decided to take a two weeks’ vacation, one week with his parents in England but he was not sure what to do with the other seven days. That’s when I suggested he drive with me to the U.S. so I could return the hospitality and he could fly from Seattle (SeaTac airport) to London (Heathrow airport) on a direct British Airways flight.
Chapter 1
After taking a few steps up Pike Street/6th Avenue entrance, we went straight to the lounge in and around the Union Street Tower. The waiter approached us. To start with, we ordered two glasses of Rock Shandy. As we were waiting for the waiter to return with our drinks, two men in blue suites were approaching the lounge and sat exactly opposite us. They were very loud in their conversation; which made Ken turn to look at them. As soon as Ken turned back to me, all the expression had left his face. He was pale and frozen. I was shocked and quickly asked what was wrong. He could not speak for a minute, but raised his finger to his mouth signaling that I should close my mouth and not talk. I waited for him to recover. The waiter came back with our drinks. I paid and gave the waiter a very good tip with the intentions. I knew that with such a nice tip, our waiter would come back. The waiter proceeded to the direction of the two gentlemen. It looked like he knew them and they knew him.
