Elias Tobias

Elias Tobias is the pen name of Michael D. Hall that he started to use in the early 1990's after writing and publishing poems and short stories for nearly 20 years. His first works were published in junior high school. This interest in writing lead to a career in photojournalism and education, teaching Secondary English. Throughout college and the different jobs that supported him, writing was and continues to be a constant factor in his life. The pen name was created by combining two different names from a movie screen credits in a western. The early American West is one of his major interests with movies, music CDs, belt buckles, and wooden nickels among his collections. In 1998, he started the web blog, "The World of Words by Elias Tobias," (http://eliastobias.net) which has been an alternate venue for his poetry and photography and other related articles and videos. Hall has created over 30 videos that integrate his photography and poetry, and one video of the only recorded musical version of his poem “Next Flight” by ex-college roommate Michael Albright. Articles include how to write poetry and a popular instructional titled, “How to have a free poetry blog in three easy steps or claiming your homestead on the wild frontier of the Internet.” Recently more people have sent their poetry to be published on the highly ranked Internet site.

    1ST CHAPTER

Michigan is pretty in the spring, Georgia said as she looked out of the window. The trees were a blurred green and the leaves were indistinguishable against the bright blue sky. A large green information sign approached the luxury Buick automobile as it traveled west on Interstate 96. Within seconds, it was in focus. We’re 10 miles away from Lansing We’re getting closer.

But we still have a hour and a half drive to Millbrook, Malcolm said without even a glance at the map beside him. Georgia picked the map up and laid it on her lap. The air from the air conditioner ruffled the pages. Quickly, she grabbed the corner of the book atlas. She bent down and moved the map closer at the same time. Where is Millbrook? she asked.

It’s circled in red, near Mount Pleasant.

Oh I see it now, she said. She studied the map and moved her lips as she counted the miles indicated. Yeah, you’re right. She glanced out of the side window. How big of a place is Millbrook, anyway? Does it have a country store and a gas station? she asked.

Honey, the only thing in Millbrook is the school. It’s been that way for 150 years now. It has those other things, like a store and a gas station, and even two or three farm houses. If it weren’t for the school, the town wouldn’t have its stoplight on the highway.

Malcolm was referring to Highway 66, the main link to civilization from Millbrook. The school is Kroeson Military Academy. Millbrook connects to the highway by a country road called appropriately School Road. Like all midwestern places, there were several country routes to Millbrook, but their northern path along Highway 66 was the easiest and most used.

"It will be nice to see the school again. I’ll show you the rooms
