Author

Maria Giovanna Tomsich

Maria Giovanna Tomsich was born in Fiume, Italy (until 1945, now Croatia). She immigrated to Canada in 1951. She worked as a lab assistant at the Western branch of the Connaught Laboratories for seven years while taking courses at the same time. After her BA, she changed direction by embarking on an MA in Spanish literature. Thanks to a teaching assistant scholarship, she pursued her PhD at Brown University (Providence, Rhode Island). Thanks to yet another scholarship granted by the Canada Council, she was able to conduct research for her doctoral thesis in Spain. All her publications deal with eighteenth-century topics. As in her previous poetry book, Poemario de Spanish bank, she composes her poems in Spanish language, which she uses most frequently, then she translates them in English. Readers interested in poetry may find it intriguing to see how she meets the challenge of poetic expressions in two so different languages.

    SITIOS ONIRICOS

    ONEIRIC SITES

    Errabundos

    Errabundos somos,

    del llano a la sierra

    trepamos. De pago en pago

    erramos, imanados

    por luz opalescente

    hacia inciertas metas.

    Wanderers

    Wanderers we are,

    from plane to mountain

we climb. From site to site

    we wander, mesmerized

    by opalescent light

    toward uncertain goals.

    ¿Adónde vamos?

    Con tanto bagaje. ¿Adónde vamos?

    Reluciente y etérea la última

    telaraña de la tallada selva

vamos a rasgar en la disminuida

    luz del sol poniente.

    Todo lo hemos hecho frágil,

    precario. ¿Adónde vamos?

    turulatos de la tecnología.

    hacia un baden emponzoñado vamos.

    Where are we going?

With so much baggage. Where are we going?

    Shiny and ethereal the last

    cobweb in the gutted jungle

    we are going to tear

    by the diminished

    light of the setting sun.

    We have rendered everything fragile,

    precarious. Where are we going

    heads stuffed with technologies?

toward a poisoned channel we are going.

    Láminas de plata

    No era Tasco. Aunque similar

el sitio era vastísimo sin la catedral,

    descanso de ánimos abatidos

    por una labor ímproba

    que debía ser sí, abnegada,

    mas en el estro creador,

libre. Nada de eso. Pesadas chapas

    de plata teníamos que sumergir
