Alexander Turner

I first became interested in poetry at the young age of 14, we began studying poetry in class and I became captivated by it. The playful and artistic arrangement of words enticed me into its world. A few weeks after first reading poetry in class I decided to try writing a poem. Despite it being basic, I got a sense of satisfaction from it. I soon joined a website where other amateur poets could share their work to be praised and criticised. I continued to write and publish my work to that site for just over 4 years now. Through those 4 years I honed my writing skills and fed my hunger to write as regularly as possible. Over this time I developed not only an appreciation for all forms of poetry, but also an ability to convey my emotion through my work to the readers on a personal level. Not only has poetry become a passion in my life, it has helped me deal with the various upsets in my life in a productive way, that helps me to not look back on certain events in a bad light. For me that makes my writing priceless. Outside of the world of poetry, I come from Cambridge, but have moved to Aberystwyth to study Microbiology at university. Despite the 5 hour train drive back, I still head home as often as possible to spend time with my family. In my spare time I like to hang out with my friends, keep fit or kick back with a book listening to some music.

    The College Years

    Odd Bits And Bobs

I would never have written as avidly, nor had the motivation to publish my work properly if it weren’t for the support of my family, all of the users of Wicked Moon poetry forums and the friends that supported me, especially Ashleigh Holding, Rhea Tatem-Dokter, Jordan Kirby, Jennifer King, James Amey and the various members of the Darren Criss UK Street Team that also supported me.

    Preface

This book is a collaboration of the various poems I have written during the past four and half years or so. It has been set out in a way to highlight the journey I have taken with my love life. I have also included at the end of the book (chapter Odd Bits and Bobs) any other poems of importance to me that were not linked to my relationships.

    Where It

    Began

In this first chapter, I cover the poems I first wrote, focusing on the poems to do with love interests and at times, the conflict surrounding it. These are from the first two years of writing, in which I was in Secondary School (High School).

    That First Poem

I did not make a name for this poem, it can hardly be called a poem. I have only included it as it was the first piece of poetic work I wrote.

    My tears fall down

    my heart is bound

    they will not stop

’till my true love is found

    Bells of Love

Thankfully they get a bit longer after that one!

A bell is not a bell

    until someone rings it

a song is not a song

    until someone sings it

    Love wasn’t put

    in the heart to stay

    for love isn’t love

    ’til you give it away

    My Love Is Real

    Crumbled papers,

    of poems about you,

    written with words,

    that’ll never come true.

    Written in ink,

    that will never fade away,

    the hopeful words,

    I wish I could say.

    Hands still shaking,

    as I continue to write,

    scribbled letters,

    of black and white.

    Eager to tell you

    how I feel,

    wishing I could prove

    my love is real.

    The Essence of Divinity

I wrote this poem for my first ever girlfriend, it was a big thing for me, being such a shy guy!
