Grateful
I would first like to humbly thank my precious husband who sweetly encouraged me with this project of turning a 45-minute presentation into a book. You are a man of passion and an amazing husband and father. I am deeply honored to be married to you and to parent our four children with you. I embrace our crazy days and love our crazy adventures. The words, I love you,
and soul mate
will never say enough! You are the one I prayed for since I was twelve years old.
Thank you to my children for allowing me to talk about our family life in this book. You are four cherished gifts from God. Isaiah, you are an inspiration. Josiah, you are a joy. Bernard, you are big-hearted. Silvanie, you are a sweetie pie. I am so moved that I get to be your mom.
Thank you to the individuals who so timely gave me the confirmation to dive into this project. You know who you are. I appreciate you so much.
Thank you to dear family and friends who encouraged me and prayed for me during the project. Your words were so kind and gracious.
Thank you to the moms who were willing to discuss this important topic over the years and for allowing me to quote you in the book. Our conversations were real and refreshing.
Thank you to Amanda Hall for writing the section on the home-schooling parent. I value your input and I know all of the readers will too.
I want to give a huge thank you to Kathy McKinney for being my editor. God brought us together through our adoption and the impacting ministry of Show Hope. Our family is forever grateful for your hand in this project and your heart in our lives.
I have always been moved by and in awe of the sunset. A daily display of God’s splendor. Through God’s daily creativity, the front cover idea was born. A special thank you is given to Mike Gazdiewich—our neighbor and friend. Thank you for taking the photo of our hands for the front cover. Watching you take a daily photo of the sunset warms my heart. Your camera communicates deeply and beautifully.
I deeply thank Jim Walters for his amazing insight and his many words of gracious encouragement. You always were just a phone call away. I am humbled that you were so happy to help me with the fine details of this process. Additionally, I want to thank my parents for consistently cheering me on with each and every step of this book. You stayed up late with me as I wrote papers in highschool and college. You are still staying up late with me as I rearrange words. We may be miles away, but we are so close at heart. I love you dearly. Lastly, I want to thank Heidi Olivera for your final edit of this book. You are a mastermind with commas and hyphens. I am honored that you shared your time and talent with me.
Most importantly, I want to thank my Lord, Jesus. For the last two years, every time I gave this talk to a MOPS group, you loudly said to my heart, Write the book.
Thank you for teaching me to Live by faith, not by sight.
(2 Corinthians 5:7) Thank you for your pursuit of me. I am daily humbled by your love and presence. I am sustained by you and delight in you! You are my greatest treasure. You are my Redeemer and the redeeming quality to each day.

Praise for the Playing Parent
"Convicting and inspiring all at the same time. Cara Jakab presents a convincing case for connecting to your child’s heart through the amazing power of play. How simple is that?
I like to remind parents that when it comes to parenting, the days are long but the years are short. We need to seize those years and we can do it through the power of play. Cara Jakab will show you how.
Read this practical book and then just try it. It works!"
Dr. Tim Kimmel, author of Grace Based Parenting and Little House on the Freeway
Psalm 68: 5 "A Father
to the fatherless .,,
He sets the lonely in families."

The Power of Play
Two gorgeous pairs of dark chocolate brown eyes stared wide-eyed at me. Their excitement and anticipation filled every ounce of their faces. Their tummies were gratefully full after the very first meal in our home as a family of six.
Pancakes!
Sticky syrup, butter, strawberries and homemade pancakes never seemed quite so special. Three batches and many memory-filled laughs later, we moved from the kitchen into the living room. Now we were peacefully sitting cross-legged on the floor to play a matching game. Bernard and Silvanie were all smiles. They quickly moved from sitting to lying on their stomachs with their feet playfully swaying in the air. They were seemingly so amazed with this quiet and engaged time. Our long moments of eye contact cemented our connection. It was precious play, and they quickly understood the game, even though they didn’t understand many English words. We silently and happily took turns matching plastic Oreo cookies.
Smiles . . . silence . . . It was a surreal and sacred moment as I played with our two long prayed for children. In this memorable moment, they were completely satisfied and I had to pinch myself to make sure this was really happening. The last ten days for these two precious souls could never be fully articulated or understood.
* * *
On January 12, 2010, a historical earthquake of unfathomable magnitude devastated the beautiful, but already poverty imprisoned country of Haiti. We had been in the adoption process for two years and had a referral from God’s Littlest Angels for our two children, Bernard and Silvanie Exumond. George and I had been to Haiti two times and then took our two boys to the country that we deeply loved to meet our son and daughter in September of 2009.
God’s Littlest Angels
John and Dixie Bickel had been ministering to children in Haiti since 1994 and started international adoptions in 1997 through their orphanage. They have always been passionate about the children in their care, and now they were passionate about getting some of these children out of their care. Because of the vast and pressing new needs
