About this ebook

Maternal Depression is a clinical disorder which effects approximately 10-15% of childbearing aged women and typically assessed within the first year of her infants birth. Various factors such as culture, language competency, access to mental health services, and adequate financial resources impact whether women are diagnosed and treated. Maternal depression left untreated is dangerous.

According to some studies, Latinas have higher rates of maternal depression than non-Hispanic women, but are less likely to be identified as depressed. Given the current Latino population of the United States, a considerable portion of this group is comprised of Latinas. Sadly, research which pertains to this clinical phenomena is limited. This is an exploration of a disturbing trend among Latinas and their families.

    ABSTRACT

The rate of low birth weight infants among Latinas is rising. Conclusive etiology for this increase is unknown. However, it has been suggested that maternal mental health factors, such as depression, may pose risks for unfavorable birth outcomes. Presently, there is a lack of research that specifically addresses depression, pregnancy outcomes, and Latinas. Therefore, the present study examined the relationship between maternal depression and birth weight of infants among Latinas. Participants were obtained from a local nonprofit low birth weight agency (n = 11). A construct for mothers with a previous depressive episode and number of children surfaced.

    ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

My deepest gratitude to my family; your support has been the source of my perseverance. Chris, you are an amazing husband and father. I love and appreciate you.

Andrew, the world shines brighter with you in it. Remember one thing…

To my parents, Irene and Filimon Hernandez. Mother, you’re an incredible model of strength and determination. You came to Texas in 1963 from Mexico and made a life in spite of the most tumultuous and racially heated times in Dallas. You became a wife and mother because you believed in love. You became an entrepreneur because you believed in the American Dream. I believe in you. Thank you for believing in me! Dad, I often wonder where you are. Your laughter is a thought away, your zest for life never ceased to amaze me, and I know you watch over us. Thank you for running down hills with me and listening when I just needed to be heard. I listen for you in my dreams.

Chris, Andrew, Mom, and Dad – WE DID IT!

To my brothers, Edgar and Adam—I love you guys!

Thank you, Dr. Hokamp; you are an incredible mentor.

    A SPECIAL THANKS

I would like to thank Elizabeth Heyne. Liz, your guidance and support allowed me to complete my doctorate internship in Dallas. Chris and I were able to see Andrew grow in amazing ways throughout the internship year.
