A Bell for Adano
John Hersey
1944
Introduction
A Bell for Adano is a war novel by American author John Hersey, published in 1944 and currently available as a version published by Vintage in 1988. It is based in the fictional town of Adano at the time of the Allied invasion of Sicily in July 1943. Hersey had covered the invasion as a journalist for Time magazine.
Adano is based on the real-life town of Licata, and the protagonist of the story, Major Victor Joppolo, is based on some of the experiences of Major Frank E. Toscani, the American Army officer who was Licata's military governor at the time. Hersey spent several days visiting Toscani, who told him of replacing the town's much-loved seven-hundred-year-old bell, which had been taken from the town by the Fascists to be melted down and used in the war effort.
Another character in the novel, General Martin, is based on a real-life model, in this case General George S. Patton, Jr., commander of the U.S. Seventh Army at the time. The incident in which Martin orders the shooting of a mule is based on a real incident during the war.
A Bell for Adano revolves around the efforts of Joppolo to reestablish civilian trust in the authorities. He believes in the power of democracy, and he makes great efforts to get the town back on its feet after its citizens have been beaten down by decades of Fascist rule. His sincerity and decency win the townspeople over, and the novel is a tribute to how people can learn to cooperate with one another under benevolent American tutelage.
