The Guitar
Federico García Lorca
1931
Introduction
Of all twentieth-century Spanish poets, few strike such emotional chords with readers as Federico García Lorca. The Academy of American Poets describes Lorca as possibly the most important Spanish poet and dramatist of the twentieth century.
His brilliant and innovative poetry captured the hearts of his fellow Spaniards during his own lifetime, and his fame as a poet, artist, musician, and dramatist has only grown in the years since his death at the young age of thirty-eight. The circumstances of his tragic death at the hands of fascist Nationalist militia in 1936 sometimes overshadows his poetry in the minds of readers. His work is nonetheless worthy of both study and admiration. In particular, his early poetry, rooted in the folk traditions and music of his native Andalusia, continues to intrigue and delight readers and critics alike.
In 1921, Lorca set out to write a volume of poetry that would explore the music known as cante jondo, or deep song,
a type of flamenco music played by the Gypsies of Andalusia. Lorca viewed authentic flamenco as an expression from the heart and soul of a stigmatized people. He strove not to imitate the cante jondo but rather to use it as inspiration for his poetry. The volume Poem of the Deep Song is subdivided into suites, or sequences of poems, devoted to different forms of deep song. The opening sequence, "Poem of the Gypsy Siguiriya, includes seven poems, the second of which is
The Guitar," a poem that expresses the anguish and pain of life through the metaphor of a musical instrument.
Although Lorca wrote nearly all of the poems included in this collection in November 1921, the book itself was not published until 1931. The Guitar
is also included in Federico Garci a Lorca: Collected Poems, edited by Christopher Maurer, published in a revised bilingual edition in 2002. For students studying in both English and Spanish, the facing-page translations in this book are particularly useful.
