About this ebook

Sometimes a goodbye leads to a second chance…..

Racing ahead of a deadline, singer Ellie Moore makes a stop at her beach house to retrieve a sentimental item. When she discovers her estranged husband there, she tries to grab and dash, but the sudden downpour of hard rain makes it impossible to safely leave.

Though he doesn't know how he feels about seeing his rock star wife after all this time, the one thing David does know is that she's not driving anywhere in a vicious hurricane.

Until the weather blows over, the two are stuck, forced to confront each other and the hurt lurking below the surface of their marriage.

Will the fierce winds of the raging storm blow open the locked doors to their hearts?

Author

Dahlia DeWinters

Dahlia DeWinters a multi-genre author who flirts with the dark side. While many of her  stories still dabble in the hearts and roses genre, it is often against a sinister backdrop.  She is a lover of all things scary, even though she tends either to watch them while  gripping her husband's arm or between her fingers. Her enthusiasm for found footage  horror, surprisingly, has rewarded her with a few gems. Drawing, fiber arts, and  gardening are a few of the things she does in her spare time, when not dreaming up  stories of zombies, mysterious happenings in gothic mansions or screening horror films.

Chapter 1 - Love Don't Live Here Anymore

Ellie Moore turned onto the two-lane blacktop road leading to the island’s drawbridge. If she hurried, she could make it to the beach house, grab her necklace, and be at the airport in under ninety minutes. The steady line of cars, pickup trucks, and minivans rolling in the opposite direction, gave her pause for only a moment. Vacationers and natives alike were leaving the island in the wake of the hurricane warning. She hoped traffic would be thinner by the time she came back.

Looking through the windshield, she noted the sky was grayer than it had been fifteen minutes ago. She pressed a little harder on the accelerator, urging the little red car faster. There was absolutely no traffic going her way; she had the whole road to herself. Twenty minutes in, five minutes there, and twenty minutes out. Easy, right?

Just before the bridge, a police vehicle sat at an odd angle on the road, its red lights flashing. An officer dressed in foul weather gear held up a hand to stop her.

Ellie pressed the button to lower her window, wondering what this was all about.

The officer leaned down to window’s level. Good afternoon, ma’am. You do realize there’s a hurricane warning along with a voluntary evacuation? About twenty-five, his hat sat low over his eyes, which suddenly dawned with recognition. Ellie Moore? I heard you had a house on the island. His eager smile made him look like a teenager.

Ellie returned the young man’s smile, turning the wattage up to five out of five. No matter how tired or stressed-out she was, she always turned on the celebrity for a fan. I know, officer. Thank you. I’m not staying. I’ll be gone in less than an hour. She held up her hand, the first three fingers pressed together. Girl Scout promise. She lowered her hand. The drawbridge will still be open, I assume?

He pushed up his hat a bit. Ms. Moore, the drawbridge will be manned until five o’clock. After that, it depends on the storm.

Oh. She waved a hand. I’m not worried. You know how weather reports are. She squinted up at the sky. It’s just one of those island thunderstorms. It’ll pass, I’m sure of it.

The officer laughed, perhaps charmed by her optimistic prediction. Hope springs eternal, but it’s not looking too good for us. Say. He removed his hat, revealing short, sun-kissed blond hair. His blue eyes were luminous against his tanned skin, and Ellie imagined he spent most of his shifts on beach patrol. Can I have your autograph?

Of course. Ellie rooted in her purse and pulled out a notepad she kept for such occasions. It was easier to bring her own paper than wait for a poor fan to find something for her to write on. After signing ATM receipts, old envelopes, and the label on a prescription bottle, she decided to take charge of the whole process. What’s your name, sweetie?

Brian. His grin grew wider. Brian Hanover.

To Brian. She scrawled the message on pink paper. My favorite Officer of the Law. She signed her name with a flourish, tore off the sheet and handed it to him. Keep it dry, darling. You don’t want the ink to run. She winked. He was a cutie.

Officer Brian tucked the sheet of paper under his raincoat and replaced his hat. Thank you, Ms. Moore. Please be careful. This storm’s gonna be a bad one. He touched the brim of his hat. I hope you find what you’re looking for, and fast too.

I’m sure I will. Goodbye, Officer Brian. Ellie waggled her fingers and goosed the gas, propelling the Beetle onto the bridge.

Gritting her teeth against the metallic hum of the bridge under her tires, she squeezed the steering wheel tight as she drove. The low, wavering frequency made the hair on the back of her neck quiver. She breathed a sigh of relief when she hit the blacktop on the other side. When her husband drove, she’d turn the music in her earbuds up, but still, the hum would reverberate through her body.

Turning onto her street, she noticed how deserted
