Hello. My name is Topaz. I used to be an ordinary sixth grader. Not anymore. My parents are enslaved. My best friend captured. I have learned lessons aplenty. The most important? You can’t trust anyone, especially yourself. But I look back at my sixth-grader life like people look at the setting sun: beauty, and then darkness—by, as some say, a natural force, carried away from our mortal eyes—but something that you can see again tomorrow. But my life isn’t natural—and on some days, I don’t know if I’ll ever see tomorrow.

Chapter Zero
A Sinister Plot
It was after school hours, yet the man had access to the school. A chubby fellow named Paul waddled beside him.
Now, Paul,
said the man, I want you to install hidden cameras in every room in this school, you hear? The cafeteria, hallways, classrooms, bathrooms—I want it all.
Paul’s nose cringed. "The bathroom? Sir that’s highly—"
"I don’t care! yelled the man.
Your job is to install cameras. I want to install a camera. You listen to me!"
Paul gulped and took off down the hall, waddling.

Yummy O’s and the Mind Reader

This isn’t a school-related thing, there are no adults, and I really can’t trust this company! How do I know they aren’t stalkers or kid-murderers or … or … who knows what! For all we know, they’re Frankenstein or Obi-Wan Kenobi or the Wolfman or Bi—
Stacy cut me off. Or they’re the Yummy O’s cereal company who is doing a contest like I told you, and I sent away ninety-three box tops to.
I don’t know,
I said, still uncertain.
"Ninety-three!"
*******
I never even heard of Yummy Oats!
"Yummy O’s," she corrected.
Goodbye, Stacy. See you in English class.
I started to walk away.
I know you want to go!
Stacy screamed, her temper rising dangerously.
Oh, Stacy,
I said, "I hate it when you say things like that; it
