    CHAPTER

    1

    September 10th, 2001

It had been a fine morning for a flight out of Baltimore Maryland. Dr. Timothy Watson’s flight had just arrived at JFK airport in New York. Dr. Watson had a very good reason to be in high spirits on this cool fall day, being as how he was a recent graduate from John’s Hopkins medical school. Tim was about to begin his career as an inspiring ER physician in New York City.

When the aircraft landed at JFK, Tim made mental note of how eager everyone was to disembark, all heading towards the baggage claim. As he hurried along to the conveyer belt, in anticipation of claiming his luggage, it took just a couple of minutes before Tim spotted his bags; he then grabbed them both and hurried out of the terminal.

Hey! Look at you! Sam yelled, as he rushed forward with open arms to welcome his college roommate to the city.

Hi! It is great to see you too! Tim was thrilled to see his friend, By what I can see, life seems to be treating you very well my old friend.

What can I say Tim? Life is sweet right now; in fact, it gets better every day. You will be able to enjoy this awesome lifestyle for yourself once you get the job at St. Vincent’s Hospital. By the way you look pretty good yourself, now tell me, how’s the family doing? Sam inquired.

Oh, they’re all fine, but life won’t be the same without me, so I guess they’ll just have to live with it, boasted Tim.

They both laughed. Then the two of them made a speedy exit from the airport terminal. In just a few minutes, they arrived at the short-stay parking area. Tim looked up, taking particular notice of the clear blue sky; it sure was a perfect day to see the New York skyline. In a little while, the two sat in Sam’s sports car, he started it up then they went speeding off in the direction of his apartment. The two had come to an arrangement for Tim to stay with Sam for as long as he needed. Shortly, Sam pulled up to a corner deli. This was not a coincidence, as Sam had talked non-stop about this place since they left the airport. Once inside, the two sat down at the counter, then both men ordered cold cut sandwiches. In next to no time with two large cokes in hand, sandwiches, chips and a New York pickle, two old friends munched down, grinning in between bites from ear to ear, just like a couple of school kids.

Finished with lunch, Tim paid the check, they both walked out the door then shortly thereafter, they sat back in the car and buckled up. As Sam put his foot to the floor, they were soon off in the direction of his place. Upon arrival at Sam’s residence, Tim got a quick tour of the apartment before Sam headed off back to the office. As the new partner in a prestigious law firm, Sam needed to return to work, as there would be plenty of time to catch up with his old friend later.

Tim admired the apartment with its modern yet classy décor. His friend had definitely acquired good taste since his days in college when, as Tim recalled, he had been very untidy. Sam had certainly come a long way since they shared the crummy apartment in Baltimore. After exploring the new living facility, Tim thought it was time to call his sister, Faith.

As usual, Faith wasn’t home, but she did have her answering machine; therefore, Tim decided to leave his sister a challenging message. Albeit, Tim had three sisters, he adored them all, but he somehow seemed to be in harmony more with Faith, than Hope or Joy, as these two gave the impression of being somewhat more mature. Whereas Tim and Faith were, both stubborn and they preferred craziness with irrational goings on in their lives!

Tim wished that Faith could be with him right now, because she would understand just how much it meant to be here in New York. However, it was now time to unpack. Personal belongings put way, Tim then turned on the TV, prepared to watch a New York entertainment channel.

It was six o’ clock, Faith had not called him back, so he took a shower and was about to pull a cold beer out of the refrigerator when Sam called. He’d called to check up on his friend, to tell him that unfortunately he wouldn’t finish up at the office until eight. His afternoon had been hectic, after an appointment with a valuable client, but he would be done in an hour or so. He told Tim he would meet up with him at The World Trade Center, where they would eat, drink and party all night to celebrate Tim’s arrival in New York . . .

It was close to 7:30, Tim had just hailed down a taxicab, after he climbed into the back of the cab, he felt very pleased to be on his way to meet Sam. Upon arriving at Windows on the World, he proceeded to head for the bar where he then ordered a drink. As he sipped on a beer, he began to take notice of the local clientele. Most were good-looking young women, who seemed to be meandering around this fine establishment. He was just thinking what a cool place his friend had chosen to be the designated place to party, when he felt someone tap him on the shoulder.

Hey man, it’s good to see you. I can see you’ve made yourself right at home here Tim, but tell me, don’t you think this is the coolest place or what? To me, it seemed like the perfect location to celebrate our reunion. This is New York Tim, so the sky’s the limit, which means we can do whatever we like because there are no restrictions here! As he spoke, Sam’s cell phone started to make a remarkable loud noise, which sounded like the blast of a trumpet. Apparently, from what Tim could pick up, it was Kim, Sam’s latest girlfriend. Therefore, Tim sat back allowing the two to chat for a few minutes. When Sam hung up the phone, he informed Tim that Kim was looking forward to meeting him and that she would be joining them shortly.

Oh, Yeah, I almost forgot, Kim is bringing her drop-dead, gorgeous roommate along with her, which I hope won’t upset you too much, Sam cheerfully announced.

Tim just laughed then said, The more the merrier, I always say, but tell me if I heard you correctly, you did say that Kim and her friend are nurses at St. Vincent’s?

I sure did, Tim. I must say that for a physician, you certainly have good hearing, but you do have my personal assurance that you are about to be in for a terrific surprise my man! A pretty, petite brunette with hair to her hips, the rest, well you will just have to judge for yourself my good doctor. Sam ordered a glass of wine, then he warned Tim that he would never again want to return to Maryland, not after he had tasted the good life here in the Big Apple. Tim said nothing, he just sat there smiling, stopping to consider how his friend had thought of everything. He just continued to sit, taking pleasure in the fact that this was about to be a most memorable occasion. One thing he was sure of, was that his first evening in New York as a doctor, would certainly be something he would never be likely to forget.

    47806.jpg

Many hours later, after Tim and Sam had dropped Kim and her friend off at their apartment, the two young men now stood patiently waiting for a cab. Just as Tim had anticipated, this evening on the town had been one great night out. However, he could never have imagined how terrific this evening would turn out to be; it had been way beyond all expectations. Meanwhile, Sam had left his car at his company’s parking garage. He knew he intended to party until the early hours of the morning and that there would be no designated driver; therefore, he stood now in the early hours of the morning trying to flag down a cab. Fortunately, they did not have long to wait before a cab approached, the two friends then climbed into the back seat and made themselves comfortable. Tonight the two of them felt like they were back in college, rather than being the professional men that they now were.

Sam, began his employment soon after graduating law school, he now worked for a prestigious down town law firm. This young man was ambitious. He worked extremely hard, so it came as no surprise that in a short time this motivated young defense attorney, would without a doubt, have endless possibilities for his future. Sam stood six-feet three, handsome with a broad chest, narrow hips attached to those long legs of his. However, his prize possessions were two penetrating green eyes, which made an immediate impression on those he met. This was not a bad characteristic for a young defense attorney. There had never been any doubt in his family’s mind that Sam had what it took to make a top-notch lawyer. All throughout college, he had been first in his class, a smart individual, as well as a sportsman who had a great personality. Therefore, it appeared that the world was his for the taking, but the best part of all, was that Sam never once came across as being a big shot!

Poor Tim’s head was spinning with grand elusions, totally believing the nurses at St. Vincent’s Hospital, would no doubt fall at his feet. Tim, like his friend was also a handsome specimen of youth with his bright blue eyes and light brown short curly hair; he too, was over six-feet tall. Unquestionably, Tim had no doubt that the ER position was his. He would accept the contract immediately, and then begin his career in New York City.

    47808.jpg

Tim slept soundly. He awakened suddenly, startled by the piercing sound of a cell phone ringing in his ear.

Hi Tim! How are you this morning? Just thought we could grab some breakfast at Windows on the World, before you set off down town for your interview, Sam suggested.

Tim was still half-asleep, but he agreed that a hearty breakfast sounded like a good idea.

Okay, see you at 8:30, Pal. Tim said, before shutting down the cell phone smiling, as he felt good about the prospects of the day to come. As his feet hit the floor, he was immediately off to the bathroom, ready to take a long hot shower. In next to no time, Tim dressed and was eager to be on his way as he vacated the apartment. Once outside, he immediately hailed down a taxicab. As he stood out in the air, Tim stopped to consider for a moment, if his entire life might now depend on these cab drivers. However, he didn’t have time to think about that any more because, the cab driver had just pulled up. Tim welcomed the cabby warmly upon entering the cab, he again sat in the back seat while enjoying the morning sunshine. However, his mindset was to take in the view while speeding off in the direction of his destination. Having just passed the 30th Street Heliport, the Chelsea piers were now coming into view. Tim very much enjoyed the view, as he sat and watched New York’s rush hour traffic all speeding along into the city. The cab driver was kind enough to inform Tim that in approximately three miles, traveling at their present speed, they would pass the Valley Street side of the North Tower at World Trade Center. In Tim’s estimation, it would take about seven minutes for the cab to reach The World Trade Center. As Tim glanced down at his watch, it was 8:35 a.m, he was well aware that he was running late, but he knew that Sam wouldn’t be upset, because he was used to the rush hour traffic.

In a few minutes we’ll be approaching the Verse Street side of the big pedestrian plaza, said the Cabby. Sir, I’m not sure if you know, but this surrounds the World Trade Center complex, he remarked.

Thanks a lot, nice of you to tell me, acknowledged Tim.

My pleasure, Sir, the cabby replied, And, in a few minutes, you’ll be able to walk to the North Tower lobby. Once there you can take the high-speed elevator up to Windows on the World, which is where you plan to meet your friend, I believe?

When they came to a stop at the curb, Tim paid the cab driver, and then gave him a generous tip, because he felt so good this morning. Tim thought he might as well splurge, because after all, soon he would be an ER doctor at St. Vincent’s hospital. He felt now was the time to start as he meant to go on, so feeling full of self-confidence Tim began to ascend the steps from the sidewalk up to the raised plaza. After that, he began to walk towards the entrance to the North Tower. Quickly, he looked at his watch; it said 8:40 as he crossed the busy plaza. He could now see people hurrying along at a fast pace, eager to be on their way to keep those urgent business appointments. Some carried hot cups of coffee, as they speedily headed off in the direction of their offices. Whatever, they all appeared eager to start their busy workday. As Tim stopped to watch them all hurry along, a strange noise caught his attention. It sounded like a low rumble off somewhere in the distance. Tim then turned around to get a better look of what was happening and he could see clearly that people looked bewildered. Many had begun to gather in groups before they began to rush forward. Suddenly, out of nowhere, came the sound of a loud noise that made the roar of what sounded to be rolling thunder. At that moment, Tim stopped to look up at the sky, to try to determine what was taking place. Then without warning, he could see coming from the North a huge twin-engine passenger jet, which appeared to be flying much too low. The aircraft appeared to be heading directly towards him, the exact place where he now stood. In addition, the sound of the engines had become increasingly loud as the plane accelerated. It was as if the pilot had pushed the throttles forward. Tim then turned his attention to the South Tower and began to believe that there was no real problem because the Twin Towers were much higher than the aircraft. Then in an instant—without warning—the plane took a dive towards the North Tower. Everyone started screaming, shouting as it quickly became chaotic. At that time, Tim fell to the ground, as he did, he felt falling rubble all around him. When he did eventually open his eyes, Tim could feel something pulling on his legs. He struggled to keep conscious although, he was aware of someone wearing a yellow vest, at that time he did feel a hand reach out to him. The man apparently wanted to pull Tim up, but he found it difficult owing to the fact that his right hand had blood pouring out, and then much to his horror, Tim could plainly see that this man’s thumb was hanging loose by a narrow piece of skin. Everything then turned to pandemonium as people dropped like flies to the ground. The next event was a memory that would haunt Tim forever; a memory he would never be able to forget, for there was complete and utter silence, not a sound to be heard anywhere. Even though Tim tried to keep awake, despite his profound effort, he could not prevent his eyes from closing, as they were just too heavy. Therefore, Tim fell into a deep dark place just like so many others . . .

    47810.jpg

Tim did survive with only minor injuries. After a short stay in the hospital, he went on to rehab, hoping to put his mind as well as his body back together again. Sadly, Sam did not live. For Tim this was extraordinarily difficult to accept, for that reason, Tim made the decision to give up on his career. Tim was a doctor therefore, he felt the need to do some type of service for his country, he hoped that someday he might even find healing for himself. In the meantime, he would focus on helping others. Before Tim could ever begin to mend his mental state, he must first allow his body and wounds to heal. Liz, (his mother) plus his three-sisters had such high expectations for Tim. They had thought that the world supposedly was his to take, to do whatever he so wished, but that was before the crumbling of the Twin Towers.

Within weeks of his discharge from rehab, he was on a plane headed for Africa, where he would work for two years for the Peace Corp. Here he would meet Melissa, a very attractive young woman with whom he soon fell in love. Melissa and Tim seemed like the perfect couple. Both were doctors who had very similar interests, or so Tim believed at the time. Their relationship had lasted for fourteen-months and Tim believed they would soon marry, have children, and live a long happy life together. However, Tim would soon find out this was all a fairy tale, when Melissa announced she was leaving the Peace Corps. Having secured a job in California, where she would make ‘pots of money’ as a plastic surgeon. Melissa had no problem dumping Tim or the Peace Corps, as she tried to explain to Tim that what she needed was some space. However, Tim could see right through her, as she went on to reveal her true selfish, shallow, nature. Tim’s heart was broken as Melissa went on her way. Upon completion of his two-year contract with the Peace Corps, it was time for Tim to return home. However, the young doctor was not yet ready to face the world. Even though his physical appearance appeared excellent, his psychologist knew that his mental wounds needed further attention. Therefore, Tim made the decision to take a short vacation to Maryland. He had missed his family, so he thought seeing them, might help him decide what he should do with the rest of his life. However, even though he was pleased to be home, after ten-days he began to feel bored, unsettled, just, as he had been since the tragedy.

One day Tim received a call from Michael, an old college friend who was now out in Mexico working in a vineyard with their old friend Megan.

Michael and Tim had befriended Megan one time when they were on summer break from college. They had all gotten along great with Megan and her husband. Michael’s intention for calling Tim was to try to persuade Tim to join him there. He gave Tim a sad tale of how another friend of Michael’s had promised to go out there with Michael to help Megan get back on her feet. However, at the last minute Michael’s friend backed out, saying how he thought he had contacted AIDS. Unfortunately, Tim fell for the story, so off he went to Mexico, ready to help Megan and Michael. Therefore, in just a few days, Tim was heading out to BWI airport with his mother, his sister Hope, as well as Kent his brother in law.

Once at the airport, Tim said goodbye to his family at the terminal, as he now hastened to the departure lounge. At this time, he began to feel a slight nauseous feeling in the pit of his stomach. Later, he would recall this to have been some type of sign, telling him that he should not go on to Mexico.

    47812.jpg

Nine months later, Tim’s mother called, to inform Tim that his beloved grandfather had passed away in his sleep. The news of his grandfather’s demise devastated Tim, as it brought back the memories and pain of his own father’s death. Tim being only eight-years-old when he lost his Dad; was in much need of a mentor, a surrogate father, which was exactly what Grandpa Watson became to the young boy. The news of grandfather’s death sent Tim back into a deep depression, giving him dark thoughts about what else could possibly go wrong in his life . . .

Having become close friends with Tim during the past few months, Megan noticed a mood change come over him, which she had seen many times before. One night when the two were chatting, Megan made a confession to Tim that Michael’s so-called friend had never even existed. Michael had made the entire story up, just to persuade Tim to come out to Mexico to help in the Vineyard.

Well then, I guess that I got fooled big time—what can I tell you Megan this is how my life is right now, Tim sadly admitted.

    47814.jpg

The fruit pickers were certainly quite a sight; they seem to shuffle along, trying to survive the horrific down pouring of rain on this midsummer’s day in Mexico. A sad bunch of folk at the very least is what they appeared to be, toiling away in the vineyard. Each person had dressed appropriately in oilskins. All wore a large ‘Sombrero’ pulled down tightly over his or her head, which in fact covered most of their face; the attire did at least offer some protection from the unrelenting midday Sun.

Tim Watson, the blond haired, pale-skinned, obvious stranger in the pack, paused to straighten up. He then extracted a canteen from the sodden canvas pouch he wore at his waist. After taking a long swig of his cool water, he then stopped to take a good look around as he frowned, apparently not happy with his situation.

Do cheer up Tim, because I always say that when things seem to be so bad that they can’t possibly get any worse, well of course then they always do, teased Megan. The young woman then noticed the old familiar look of anxiety return to Tim’s face. Most times her challenging remarks managed to lighten up Tim’s spirits. However, judging by his reaction, it did not appear to be the case today. Megan, being extremely perceptive was well aware that the sudden departure of his friend Michael had upset Tim to no end. Michael simply picked up his bags, and then left the vineyard without any feeling of guilt, shame, or remorse. Michael didn’t stop to consider the plight of his friend Tim, which meant Tim now had the added joy of paying more rent, as well as having to donate extra cash to the food kitty. The deal Tim and Michael had agreed upon was to share all expenses fifty-fifty. However, by the looks of things, this so-called friend did not intend to return to honor their verbal agreement. Another annoying thought crossed Tim’s mind. His friend would now, not be around to help the fruit pickers gather-in the harvest. Clearly, Tim’s prospects for making any money on this deal had just ended and further more, his future seemed bleak and dismal, rather like the drenched ground on which he stood.

Well, thanks for those words of wisdom Megan, because I needed to hear that right now, sarcastically Tim remarked. His response must have emerged more sharply than he had intended because, Megan’s grin instantly vanished as she gave him an enraged glare.

What did you say? she angrily asked. Megan, I’m so sorry. You must forgive my bad manners. I am so embarrassed to say this, but due to lack of finances as well as the incredible humid weather, together with Michael flying the coop, has left me ready to pull my hair out. I must admit that I never should have allowed this situation to happen, you are no way to blame for any of this.

Tim, it’s hardly surprising, Megan, admitted graciously, What with this foul weather, as well as losing your roommate, of course it has made your life all the more complicated. However, life goes on, so I suggest you’d better get caught up with the fruit picking, or else you’ll end up being here until midnight. Obviously, she was trying to make him feel better, but she also had feelings. Judging by what he had just said, it apparently wasn’t going to be long before he too made his departure from the vineyard. After all, this was, just a temporary arrangement, so like everything else of late, she would just have to grin and bear it. Megan was fully aware of how fortunate she had been to have Tim work for her, doing it as an act of kindness, which she would never forget. Tim had donated his time and services, at a time when she needed his help the most, and without his effort, she might have lost the vineyard.

Tim now began to experience the old familiar feeling of despondency coming on, which together with thoughts of guilt still haunted him from time to time. Michael’s sudden departure was just the icing on the cake, but for Tim, it had brought to a head the thoughts he had kept in side, only now they had reached boiling point. He knew the time had come for him to lay out his true feelings to Megan, about his stay at the vineyard. This young woman, his dearest, closest friend, deserved to know the truth of how empty his life had become. However, he needed to tell her with great compassion, so as not to hurt her any more than he needed to. Consumed with his own issues, Tim had forgotten the immense pain that still haunted Megan each day, as she too, had suffered a great loss. Brian, Megan’s husband, had up and abandoned her as well as their newborn, just six months ago. Megan’s heart had broken when her husband informed her that he had taken a lover. Then as if to pile on even more grief, Brian told her that he had come to the decision that their marriage was over. Brian had fallen in love with a younger more attractive man. He needed to be done with this marriage, as he was eager to flee with his new lover to begin a new life. The scumbag husband moved out of their home the next morning, right after telling his wife the appalling news.

Megan, a most beautiful woman in every sense, was tall, slim with long red hair that hung down to her slender waist. As beautiful as she appeared on the outside, she was the same on the inside, always caring for others. She always opened her doors to those in need, offering food and shelter, too bad, there had been no chemistry between her and Tim.

    47816.jpg

It had been nine-months since Megan’s grandfather had passed away following a long fight with bone cancer; thankfully, the old man was finally at peace when he died. He had worked hard all his life to achieve his dream, which consisted of long hours, blood and sweat, but most of all struggling to maintain his beloved vineyard. The man had suffered enough with this treacherous disease, so on a warm spring evening, as the stars shone brightly in the sky, the old man spoke to his Lord. He asked for forgiveness of his sins, for his Master to take care of his grandchildren, and then he begged his Lord to take his soul to Heaven. In a relatively short time, Megan had to deal with the grief of her grandfather’s death, as well as the recent birth of her daughter, Rebecca. None of this included working the vineyard, the inheritance from her grandfather.

With her husband’s sudden departure, this meant she was about to make some dramatic changes in her life. However, no matter what else she had to go through in life; her first priority would always be to provide and take care of her daughter. Nonetheless, Megan now had the vineyard to take care of. She would have to take control and focus on making it work just as her grandfather had done before her.

    47818.jpg

Usually, Tim did not share his problems with others, as he felt it was better not to bore people with the haunting details of his life. He carried a burden of which he could not share, mainly because of the guilt he felt compelled to endure. Today, started out just like any other day, as Tim would try to tolerate the blazing hot sun as usual. He worked endlessly picking the fruit from the vines, but as the day wore on, it became apparent that he had to make a decision. One, which he had been putting off for quite some time now, Tim, knew it, was time for him to leave the vineyard, but how was he going to tell Megan? He would never leave her stranded but, as he thought things over, he came up with an idea, which if it worked would not change the work force at the vineyard.

Megan’s younger brother Jared had just informed her that he intended to take a year off from his studies. After graduating high school, he would wait until next year to commence Agriculture College. At first, his idea had been to take care of his inheritance from Grandfather, as the hacienda, was in much need of repair. Tim’s plan was to have Jared jump in, and work at the vineyard, which would help his sister out, just until she got back on her feet. In the meantime, perhaps a couple of Jared’s friends might like to make some extra money, as well as help a friend.

Then later that evening, after Megan had put Rebecca to bed, she sat with Tim under a Palm tree; both were sipping on cold beers, as they tried to gather some relief from the balmy summer night’s heat. Tim knew that the time had come for him to take this opportunity to tell his friend what he had been contemplating all day. He moved closer to her side, ready to share with her his decision to leave the vineyard. Megan stared into his eyes listening intently to his every word, as she had expected to hear this from Tim for some time now. Once he had finished talking, Megan graciously stood up, she gave him a warm hug and then in return, he bent down gently kissing her on the cheek. Megan then quickly made the excuse that she must go to check on Rebecca, and that she planned to call her brother. Very quietly, she told Tim that they should call it a night, she was so very tired, and it had been an extremely long day. The truth was that Megan did not want her dear friend to witness the outpouring of tears that she could barely contain. Left to his own resources, Tim began to think about Rebecca, a child he had come to love as his own. At that time it suddenly hit him how much he would miss this little girl as well as her mother . . . It then occurred to Tim that whatever life held in store for him, there were bound to be painful emotions, which he would just have to learn to deal with. Later as he lay in his bunk bed, his mind began to wander back to memories of that September day. Sweat poured from his brow, as he tried to blank the sad thoughts from his mind, but in his heart, he knew this day would always be a part of him. Tim wept many tears for those who rescued so many, as well as the ones who lost his or her life on that fateful day. His part now was to keep their memories alive. He must remind others what their fellow citizens had sacrificed on behalf of this great country. Tim must make sure that no one ever forgets these lost souls, because they are America’s truest Heroes.

One week later, with no sign of malaria, AIDS, or the bird flu, Tim Watson was packed and ready to leave the vineyard. After endless goodbyes, handshakes, plus hugs from his fellow co-workers, Tim strolled across the street. Here he met up with Megan and her daughter, who were waiting in the stifling heat. Then suddenly there came a mighty roar, which sounded like thunder, as the workers screamed out, Adios Amigo! Tim turned to make one last wave towards the small crowd who had hustled together in the blazing heat. Then he reached down to pick up Rebecca, allowing her to give him one last hug, as well as sloppy kisses. With tears in his eyes, he reached out to her mother, which was when Rebecca spotted his camera case hanging from his shoulder. The child, oblivious to what was taking place held on tight, chewing on the camera strap as her mother warmly kissed Tim on the lips. Tim and Megan had talked, over an early morning breakfast. They had reached an agreement that once the vineyard was up and running to full capacity, Megan as well as Rebecca, would visit Tim in Maryland.

As the cab driver honked his horn, Tim pulled away from Megan to climb into the back seat, although Megan had pleaded with him to let her drive him to the airport. Tim politely refused, knowing that this would be the best place to say goodbye where she had her friends. He waved continuously, keeping his head turned towards them, until they were all out of sight.

As he sat clutching his wet soggy camera strap, he tried to hold on tight, as the cabby bounced along the dirt road in the direction of the airport. Upon arriving at the airport, Tim checked in his baggage and received his ticket. After he showed customs his passport, he then headed for the departure lounge. With boarding pass in hand, he went up to the bar and ordered a gin and tonic, which after gulping down he soon began to relax. Tim then began to look forward to his flight home and in no time, they called all passengers to board the aircraft. He quickly found his seat and then after nine months of working in the steaming heat of southern Mexico, he finally took his seat. Tim soon began to wallow in the sheer luxury of having cold air pouring down upon him, and with that, he fell sound asleep.

    CHAPTER

    2

Tim a tall, handsome man, had implicit manners, just like Ian, his father. His light brown hair, now cropped short, had wisps of blond streaks scattered here and there that he had acquired while working endless hours in the vineyards. The hot blistering sun had bleached his hair, but the tedious work had kept him in excellent shape.

He now sat silent in the back of yet another cab, this time driving from BWI airport on his way home going along I-95. Soon the exit for route twenty-nine would be upon them, a quick turn in Ellicott City, then on to Granby. The horrendous downpour of rain pounded the roof of the cab as Tim wiped the window with his glove, hoping to see some old familiar places. He began to wonder how life would be back in his old hometown, how he hoped being home, would bring some stability to his life. Then he remembered what Megan had told him, that it was essential to keep a positive attitude. Tim must do this, if he were ever going to fit into what one called a normal society again. He must remain strong-minded; determine to keep moving forward. Now he was about to engage in a fresh start with new beginnings, but no matter what, he must stay focused on the future, not look back, or else he would be destined to fail.

As Tim pointed out Countryside Cottage, the cabby then took a sharp bend in the road as Tim caught sight of his home. Through the trees a soft glow appeared, which in fact was a light shining through the drapes of Countryside Cottage. The cabby drove down the long driveway, and then came to a sudden stop at the parking area in front of the house.

Well, Sir is this close enough for you? asked the cabby.

Sure is, thanks a lot, answered Tim, at which point he quickly reached for his wallet, eager to pay the man and get inside out of this torrential rain. After he had paid, and given the man a generous tip, Tim hastily released his seat belt, and then jumped out of the cab. Without hesitation, the cabby got out of his vehicle, hurrying to the back of the cab to open up the trunk. The cab driver handed Tim his baggage then Tim hurried off across the pebbled path, up the stairs and onto the porch. Plucking a key from under a plant pot, Tim then put the key in the lock, turned the door-handle and walked on inside his house.

It came as a shock, to discover his mother’s house was so quiet, for as long as he could remember, memories of home were of constant noise and chaos. Then he remembered that his mother was away in England, and of course, his three sisters no longer lived here. Therefore, Tim stepped into the entrance hall putting down his two bags on the rug, as he closed the front door his cell phone began to ring.

Hello, my dear Hope. This is Tim, I trust that you and Kent are okay, must say, it is good to hear your voice again.

Oh, Tim, I cannot believe that you are really home. It is good to hear you too, sorry I couldn’t be at the airport to meet you, as I had an emergency to deal with at the practice.

Please, don’t worry about that. Matter of fact, I just walked through the door this very minute after taking a cab home. Hey, do not go worrying yourself about me, as I am just fine, I can already see you’ve left something on the counter top, he told his sister, as he walked on into the kitchen. Tell you what, let us talk tomorrow Hope, as I am about to collapse with jet lag, just need to eat, take a shower then fall into bed."

Okay, but promise me that you will have some soup, I also left a loaf of homemade bread for you to tuck into.

Yep, I promise to eat some of your bread and soup, then I’ll be off to my bed so good bye for now, yes Hope, I love you too.

Tim soon found a small box of groceries sitting on the counter top, as well as a warm to the touch crock-pot. When he took the top off, he came across a whiff of Hope’s homemade vegetable soup. On the kitchen table was a loaf of home baked bread, which also had a wonderful aroma that seemed to call out to Tim. After taking off his wet coat, he hung it up on the back of a chair, washed his hands then ladled out a dish of the soup.

Umm, it tasted delicious! Once he had finished scraping the last drop of soup from the bowl, he then made himself a pot of tea. It was not long before he began to feel the effect of jet lag creeping over his body. Therefore, after rinsing his dishes in the sink, he picked up his bags then dragged himself upstairs to his room. Tim decided to wait until tomorrow to un-pack. After taking a long hot shower, he jumped into bed and turned out the light, in seconds he was sound asleep.

Buried deep in the suburbs of Howard County, Maryland, sits the small town of Granby; a perfect, unspoiled quiet place that the local folks hope will continue to stay this way for many generations to come. Elizabeth Watson (Liz) owns a large picturesque two-story cottage, which sits on the outskirts of the small town. Liz was just a young woman, when she inherited this property from her great aunt. Countryside Cottage is the name that her aunt chose for this beautiful house, many years ago. A unique old house, better described as a large summer cottage; however, when Liz took over the ownership, she turned the place into her very own castle. Liz, a very bright young woman, came to Maryland by chance; she had no idea what she would find in Granby. With both adopted parent’s deceased, Liz took a leap of faith when she left her homeland to come to America, where she knew no one. After viewing her newfound property, Liz made a plan and this she would achieve by using her own particular English flair for décor and design.

As expected, with the investment of time, patience, plus hard work, Liz did manage to accomplish her goals. She added eloquent additions, such as marvelous extensions as well as a café and gift shop. The café and gift shop soon became the beginning of a business enterprise for Liz. Even today, the old place shows off a magnificent view of the hills during the springtime.

Then as one turns into the winding driveway, there are lines of trees beyond compare. In the springtime white and pink dogwoods, along with cherry blossoms are ready to bloom, as they will soon fill the air with a certain heavenly scent. An abundance of lush fir trees will sway in the warm breeze and one can see tall standing oaks, which surround the entire property.

Liz met and fell in love with Dr. Ian Watson, the local veterinarian; he soon became her sweetheart and very soon, they would marry. The young couple dearly loved Countryside Cottage with its views of the countryside and the pleasurable surroundings, which they shared at a time when Ian was well and happy. Since Ian’s death. Liz continued to nurture and work her land, quite determined to keep the property and the house just the same, as when she shared this all with her late husband.

Upon entering the house, a center hallway boasted an old oak staircase with shallow treads that had been there for years. Liz had fervently polished these stairs until her knuckles were raw; she had followed her aunt’s example, by being fanatical about her unblemished floors. The antique stairs led up to a gigantic picture window, which is nicely situated on the first floor landing; a place where one can stop to look out, to see the unrivaled view of the surrounding countryside. The first time Liz ever met Ian, she was busy polishing floors when Ian stopped by to meet the new occupant of Countryside Cottage.

Tim awoke the next morning to the twittering of birds; he opened up the bedroom window, which quickly reminded him of how good it felt to be home again. Tim’s room was on the top floor, at the end of a long hallway, which Liz had made light and airy, by adding two bay windows. His old childhood bedroom set was gone, but in its place stood a light oak suite of furniture, which certainly suited Tim’s taste. He very much appreciated the fact that his mother had included an armoire, which stood on the same wall as his grandfather’s old desk. When he was only a young child, as if living with his three-sisters were not enough for any young boy to cope with, Tim would still strive to keep their prying eyes out of his room. As well as making a mess of his things, which little girls do sometimes; but despite all this, the Watson children all managed to survive their childhood years, mainly because of their adoring mother.

A well-polished wood floor, white wooden window shutters covered the windows, which had replaced the red and blue small sailboats that had once decked out Tim’s room. Upon opening up the window, Tim began to feel a tickle in this throat, his nose started running; obviously, he must have picked up a cold from the air-conditioner on the plane! If not, then perhaps he had developed allergies, which would mean he should rest in bed just take things easy for a day or two. Tim, having now convinced himself that he did indeed feel dreadful, decided to jump back into his warm bed. It wasn’t long before he began to hear a continual buzz coming from the front door bell, this continuing buzz, annoyed him to no end. Reluctantly, Tim abandoned the duvet cover, as he felt around the bedroom floor for his slippers. Then he spotted a new navy bathrobe, which hung on the bedroom door, wrapping himself up, he then took off down the stairs.

Oh, my goodness Tim, it is so good to see you, as a matter of fact I was beginning to think that you were not at home. Tim, I do hope I haven’t disturbed you? announced Linda Holthaus. A very close family friend, who it seemed, was the one responsible for continually pressing on the doorbell! At this point, Linda noticed that Tim was not decently dressed, wearing only a short bathrobe. Although, it did show off his tanned legs, it was not suitable attire for this neighborhood.

Oh, Tim, I’m so sorry, because by the looks of you, I must have dragged you out of the shower, I do apologize.

Actually, no need to worry Aunt Linda, he responded. You’re wrong about me being in the shower, because as yet, I have not taken my shower. By the way, this is not a towel, it is my new bathrobe, I imagine that Mother, must have bought it for me.

Well Tim, it is a bit short for around here, but I’d better come in, and then we can shut the door, suggested Linda. Linda then entered the house so happy to see her best friend’s son, home from his world travels. Now they were safe inside, she smiled saying, Welcome home Tim, I can’t believe my own eyes, but I must say that you look fine for someone who has been living in the trenches for three years.

I wasn’t living in the trenches, he joked For your information, I do believe that I have changed for the better, don’t you think?

Yes, Tim, I do think you look more attractive with a sun tan, but just get over here, let me hug you again, she said giving him a huge bear hug, as he too returned the gesture. For a moment, Tim began to understand just how much he had really missed the love and comfort of his family.

I am so happy to be home, but I must admit, I didn’t realize just how much I had missed the old place, he shared with her. Upon hearing that remark, Linda burst into tears.

Tim you can’t imagine how much we’ve all missed you and your mother will be overjoyed to know that you’ve arrived home safe and sound. I am sure you can’t wait to see the triplets, I just saw my Kent, and he told me to tell you that he will be over later this morning.

No! I haven’t seen anyone yet. Hope called me when I got home last night, to tell me that she had left me some delicious homemade soup, as well as some fresh bread for my supper.

Well then that’s good, because we wouldn’t want you to come home finding nothing in the house for you to eat, would we now? Come to think about it, Hope did mention she was leaving you something in the crock-pot.

Oh, yes my supper was delicious, then all of a sudden jet lag set in, I could hardly keep my eyes open. I then took off upstairs to shower after that I got directly into bed. I did sleep soundly until I got woken up a little while ago by some wretched person ringing the door bell, Tim moaned, trying not to laugh.

Oh, my, Tim I’m so sorry. You know what, you never seem to change, it seems to me that I should really box your ears for getting up so late, said Linda with a smile.

Good job your mother isn’t here, after all, I promised your mother that I would keep an eye on you, to make sure that you behave, she said laughing aloud. Linda had known Tim since he was eight years old, a time when she and her husband purchased the property behind Countryside Cottage from Liz. When Ian died, Linda was at Liz’s side day and night, she became like a second mother to the triplets. Linda’s son Kent, despite the age difference, married Hope, Tim’s sister. After Hope and Kent
