    A Lone Flower

    12.jpeg

Today as I did my daily walk, I came across this lone flower. I was struck by the similarity of life. How can this flower survive all alone and in the rocky and hardest part of the road, there has not been any rain in several weeks, yet this one flower lives, all alone. There are many people who have experienced the same ordeal as I have, so we have a bond with one another. Many have tried to comfort us, but they cannot understand our feelings. When we are alone in our big house we sit there in silence and ask many questions, they all start with WHY, such a small and insignificant word yet so big. There are no answers. We only have our faith and prayers to see us through the rough times. We have many friends, yet no one can fill the emptiness of our time. Like this lone flower in the shade of the trees, the light seems miles away but occasionally a beacon of light of hope come through and it gives us hope that one of these days we will be able to have the full beam on light shine on us again and we can walk in the full sunlight. Without God to sustain us where would we be?

A day has passed, so today I went back to visit my lone flower. It was not there, I hesitated there for a moment, trying to understand what happened to the flower. Having my faith and being optimist, I thought the flower has moved to a more fertile ground and a place to get the full sunlight of God. I left the place and only a few steps away another lone flower had bloomed and taken the place of my Lone Flower.

I looked at the flower and thought how our lives changed, one come and then moves on but another one comes and replaces the old flower, it is not the same, it size and shape are not the same but yet they are the same, it is bonded with all the Flowers before it and it will be replaced someday by another Lone Flower

A Marine’s Life in the Shadows

    Fiction #1

    From Chapter One:

My name is Clay Dawson. I am lying here in a trench somewhere in South Korea trying to take a hill from the North Koreans (NK’s). The hill does not have any real value, except that the NK’s have it and someone higher up in our battalion wanted it. We will keep trying to take it until we succeed. Then the NK’s will want it back and they will try to retake the hill. Eventually everyone will just leave it and hunt for another hill to fight over. In Alabama this land could be bought for about $100.00 per acre. You can’t grow anything on it. But here it is costing the lives of a lot of good men on both sides. We have been fighting for three days now. I am tired, hungry and dirty. I can’t remember the last time I had a good sleep. We just doze off when there is a break in the action, but before we get rested the fighting starts again. I have been given the responsibility of taking this hill and keeping my men alive, a job I wish I didn’t have…

    Fiction #2

    From Chapter One:

Clay told Robert, You mean you want Amy and me to go up against twenty terrorists and an agent who might be a traitor and we won’t know when or where this will all take place! Robert said, I am trying to find another team to go along on your cruise, but right now we are short of agents with the experience needed for this type of operation. Ray is tied up on another assignment and he can’t get away without endangering other people. If his case is wrapped up by then I will definitely get him on your ship.

    Billy D. Smith

    Autobiography Second Edition

"My Life as I remember it" is a true story first published September, 2004, at the age of 68. Billy recorded his autobiography trying to retain what it was like growing up during the Great Depression; before these stories were lost in time, (completed with over fifty photos of that time period.) Billy was trying to leave a legacy of his life so that his children and grandchildren, (and anyone who lived during that period of time, or has an interest in that time,) could have an account of that era, and his entire life. All of the stories are recollections from his memory: trying to write the stories that are true and accurate. Some people’s memory may differ, they should write the things and how they remember it. But this is the way that he remembers them. Some stories, accounts of that time, and some photos came from other people, and he gives credit accordingly. Many people can relate to the stories.

    Prologue

With gratitude to Major General John Lejeune and General Roy Geiger, (of whom Camp Lejeune and Camp Geiger was named after,) and General Chester Puller, Commanding officer at Camp Lejeune when Billy, the author was stationed at Camp Geiger in Force Troops. Eternal Spirit’ which is the spirit of our corps, past, present, and future. I will tell the fictional story of Clay Dawson and his brothers. These fictional Marines are a composite of all the Marines, men and women, who have served from the time of the Continental Marines until forever, ad infinitum. They have proudly served with bravery, compassion and the usual blazing glory of ‘esprit de corps’ common to them and their kind. Readers who do not have a special interest in the Corps will recognize in these men common, all-American heroes, who are taking part in fast-moving adventures; these have been a favorite of American readers for a very long time.

"A Marines Life in the Shadows," is the first book of the fictional shadow series.

During his years in high school, Clay Dawson was an all-American-boy. He played football and hoped to earn a scholarship to play in college. As the result of being whipped by an older, larger boy, he decided to study martial arts. He used his marital arts training to protect June, the girl of his dreams. They started dating and were devoted to each other throughout high school. Before graduation, Clay knew which colleges he would apply to if he could get a football scholarship, but he was very disappointed when he did not get an offer from any of the larger schools. His heart was further broken when June suddenly left Clay to marry Ted, a newly graduated doctor she met on a cruise.

Since the United States was at war in Korea when Clay graduated from high school, he then decided to join the United States Marine Corps. He was sent to boot camp at Parris Island where he met Sergeant Bobby Lane, his Drill Instructor. His best friend at boot camp was Ray Anderson, the only black recruit in the platoon. Ray was from one of the northern states. Clay and Ray were thrown into combat soon after they graduated from boot camp. Clay immediately established himself as capable and cool headed when he was required to make the right decision under stress. He had several confrontations with Robert Connell, a CIA Agent. Clay did not like the way Robert did his job, and they disagreed vigorously after every battle.

In one of their major battles, Clay sustained a serious injury and was soon sent home to recuperate. June and Ted had separated. She visited him in the hospital; they decided to get married after she divorced her husband. Fran, who was June’s and Ted’s daughter, was attracted immediately to Clay as if they were father and daughter. At about that same time Clay heard that his old unit in Korea had been surrounded by Chinese and North Koreans. He returned to Korea to help get his friends out of the bad situation. When he got back to Korea he met his old DI, Bobby Lane. The two of them happened to meet Robert Connell, whom Clay had had so many disagreements with in the past. Clay had to ask for help from Robert so they could form a group to look for his old unit. Clay and Bobby were then assigned to Second Lieutenant Andrew (Corky) Murray’s platoon. They moved forward on their mission immediately, and during their search Murray was wounded. Clay was given a battlefield commission and took command of the platoon. After the mission was completed Murray, Bobby, and Clay were in the same outfit. Other members of their unit were Jim Kirby, the radio man; and Mitchell, their corpsman.

Clay was assigned duty via TAD (temporary additional duty) to the Agency and he was directed to report to Robert. Clay was temporarily sent back to the US to attend the Agency’s academy. While he was completing the training he met Amy. Amy was a wonderful woman almost identical to June in looks and temperament. But after Clay completed his training he had a week’s leave and he and June were married as they had planned. They only had one day before he returned to Korea. His time was divided between doing espionage for the Agency and serving with Murray, Bobby, and Ray. The Unit had unusual success as a new Recon Unit. They were therefore asked to make this a permanent unit, which would eventually become part of Force Troops. They served in this new Recon Unit until the end of the Korean War. Clay was not discharged, but he agreed to work full time with the Agency on TAD, with Amy as his partner until he was reinstated to active duty during the Viet Nam War. During the transition from Korea to service with the Agency, several events occurred which affected Clay and Amy’s future. Because Clay was away, June hired Mae Stevenson to help her and take care of the house. June had a son, named Mark. Clay came home for the birth, but he wasn’t sure who Mark’s father really was. Ray joined the Agency. Jim Kirby joined Clay’s father as a partner in the electronics store.

Sometime later the Force One Unit was called to help the Agency in an operation to go into Iran and recover hostages. Bill Vincent, Pete Mulligan, Tonto, Big Al, and Fred Baines were all assigned to Forces One on the operation. During that mission, Fred Baines was injured and was forced to retire from the Marines. Amy was captured and then Clay and Bobby had to save her.

During one of Clay’s assignments with Amy, June jealously filed for a divorce, to remarry Ted, (which was granted in his absence.) Clay married Amy after that happened.

Massey, Murray, and Lane retired from the Marines. Because Clay was never discharged but most of his time he was TAD to the Agency, he was granted his request to retire with the men. Robert was promoted to Director of the Agency. He made arrangements with Clay and Amy to do special assignments for the Agency from time to time. Clay had made some enemies in the Russian KGB and he knew he would hear from the Russians in the future.

Amy and Clay retired from the Agency, but were getting a little bored with their domestic routine when they received an unexpected call from Robert, wanting them to start a new venture.

"When You Work in the Shadows-You Can Never Walk in the Light," is the second fictional book, in the shadow series.

Clay, Amy and the group received the call to take a cruise to Europe. This was an assignment to stop the Russian KGB agents that planned to high-jack the cruise liner for ransom. The second part takes the group into Alaska, chasing the KGB agents who had kidnapped June, Clay’s first wife.

"Deep in the Shadows," the third fictional book in the shadow series. Here you are told you how this assignment began and what happened when they got underway. It will also introduce you to their old comrades and the new friends they will meet from time to time.

The undercover group that has worked together on several missions consist of Clay Dawson, a retired Marine and CIA agent; Amy, his present wife and retired CIA agent; Corky, Murray, and Bobby Lane retired Marines; Barbara, Bobby’s wife, and retired CIA agent; Robert, the head of the CIA and Ray, one of his agents. The Marine Unit includes Pete, Bill, Big Al, and Tonto (real name is John Matoxin, a Native American Indian). they are in charge of the Marine Unit.

Clay and Bobby had been fighting with two of the KGB’s most experienced and deadly agents. They had first become involved with the KGB agents in Iran, when they were in the Marine Corps. Clay and Bobby and the Marine Unit were on an undercover mission there. An Iranian group under the directions of the Russian KGB had kidnapped Amy, a CIA agent, and now Clay’s wife. They were trying to gain information about CIA’s involvement in Iran. Clay and Bobby rescued her before she could be turned over to the KGB agents.

I would love to receive comments from my readers. With great anticipation and gratitude.

    Chapter One

    The Call

It had been several months since Clay and the Unit was in their last fight with the Russian KGB agents, on a Mediterranean cruise and in Alaska. The operation was very successful. Clay had disposed of his two main adversaries, but by removing them, he had created more enemies who had sworn out a blood vendetta on him.

There were also other foreign agents who were bound to avenge their comrades and friends. He had caused the KGB more problems and they had put out a contract, with a high bounty, to assassinate, locate, or identify him. The KGB had made sure that the word leaked out that they would settle the score for the trouble he had caused. Clay and Amy were not concerned however, because they knew that a double had been used, so the KGB didn’t know who they are or what they looked like.

Amy and Clay were getting back into their routine, just taking care of business and loafing around the house, enjoying their retirement. They had been out and had gone to the electronic store, established by Clay’s father and Clay had a part interest in the business, to visit with the guys there. Jim Kirby, one of the partners in the electronic store, told them that the part of the business that was doing some work with Lyn’s manufacturing business was starting to pay off. It looked like it was going to be a good business. (Clay and Amy met Lyn and Dottie, his wife, on their last cruise. Clay had suspected them as being KGB Agents, but nothing had proved that they were spies.)

After a nice visit and a cup of coffee, they left and did some shopping. They stopped for lunch, and then returned home. But as they drove up, Clay saw a car in the driveway. He asked Amy if she recognized the car and she said that she didn’t. Clay was always suspicious when any strange car was in the vicinity of their house. Both Amy and Clay knew that their identity must always be protected! They pulled in beside the car. Clay removed a 9mm automatic pistol from underneath the dash board and checked the clip to make sure it was fully loaded. He stuck it in his belt under his shirt and went into the house. Mae, their long-time housekeeper they referred to as part of their family, told them they had a visitor and that he was sitting out on the back porch, a completely glassed-in sitting room. So they put the bags down and went out back.

As they opened the door to the porch, Clay saw that it was General Massey. They shook hands and hugged.

Clay had a questing look and said, It has been a long time, I haven’t seen you since we retired. You sure look good. Retirement has been good to you. You remember Amy, don’t you?

Massey, with a big smile said, Both of you look real good, and it has been awhile. I still have some friends at the Pentagon and they have kept me up to date with what you have been doing. You have been real busy and you keep Lane and Murray busy also. I have envied you for doing what you do. I knew when I put your name in that you would be good in that business. He added slyly.

Massey asked if he could talk to Clay privately and Clay suggested that they go down to the den. He wanted to show him his room that he had been working on, with all his memorabilia from his past military service and CIA missions. Clay thought that it probably is completed. He didn’t think that they would be called out on any more assignments! When they went into the room Clay removed the pistol from his belt, unloaded it, and put it in a drawer of his desk.

Massey looked around and said, You have quite a display here, and it’s just about your entire life. You have had your share of excitement, and I have something that I need to ask you. Clay started to get the feeling that something serious was about to be asked of them.

Massey said, Do you remember that after the Korean War, the Marine Corps were having a hard time getting funded to continue doing our job? There was a group of men, called the Berger Committee, whose main hatchet man was a Junior Senator Hathaway. He was trying to get the Marines disbanded. They took up where the group after the Second World War left off, and the thing that saved us then was the Korean War. Again, the one thing that saved us from the Berger Committee that time was the Viet Nam war. These same men tried to make me fire you when you, against orders, went with the CIA group, and the Special Marine Unit, followed the North Viet Cong spies to their camp and was involved in that fight with a large group of Viet Cong regular army.

Massey took a drink of coffee and continued, I went to the President, on your behalf, and convinced him that you were a big part on the entire operation, and he took my advice not to fire you. I had to reprimand you for your action, because you got so much publicity. I think it came from the CIA. You got more publicity than the army was getting, and that upset those people. But even when I was chewing you out, I had to smile and wished that I could have been with you. I had to make it look good. When you got your promotion it really burned those people!

Clay, trying to understand what Massey was getting to, said, I never did find out who sent the information to the papers and magazine. I had an idea but don’t think that I really ever wanted to find out. I think it was either Robert the head of the CIA, or Ray one of his agents. They knew that I was in trouble, and did it to make it hard for you or someone to make a big deal out of it, especially since it was a good operation and a successful outcome.

Massey cut in, Well a few years ago the same people were trying to get the CIA disbanded and wanted to form a central unit that would be under the control of the FBI. The Director of the FBI didn’t want to go along with that idea. The CIA and the FBI were always fighting but knew that each one had their particular expertise. As we are all realize, they just fight when one agency crosses over into the other’s area. Underneath it all they do work together, but they just don’t want anyone to know that. Recently our new President has called Hathaway back in as an advisor. He is not a senator now but everybody still refers to him as ‘Senator.’ Point in question, apparently some of those men that will help with his cabinet are back at their old tricks of stirring up trouble. Some people have gone to the President and asked him not to bring in certain people, but they have some knowledge that will help him with his decisions. These men are trying to work up a summit meeting with some other countries to stop some problems around the world before they happen and form a joint unit, mainly against Iran and North Korea to make them do what the President and some other world leaders wants. The location of the meeting hasn’t been decided.

Clay asked, What are you trying to achieve here? I know that these people want to keep everything quiet and they don’t want to give the CIA the credit they deserve, but I have nothing for those people!

Massey, sensing Clay’s uneasiness, said, The President called me to his office and he told me that they had received information that someone, or a group of people plans to disrupt the meeting and to assassinate the men going to the summit meeting. The terrorist groups don’t want this meeting to take place. The President knows that the CIA is still upset with Hathaway and his group, and he doesn’t want the CIA involved because of the difference between them. He wanted to know if I could find some good men who have the training to go to the area and make sure nothing happens. The reason he called me was that the previous President told the new President that I knew some good people. I know that you are trained for this and that you too know some people who can help you. Can I count on your help?

Clay said, You and the President underestimated Robert and his group of professionals. You know him, and you should have known that he does his job without personal feelings! My advice to you is to go back to the President and tell him that he has the best men in the world in this type of work. He is the President over everybody and he should be willing to trust the people that have our security to look after. I will however be willing to help, if Robert is running the operation. Because even though they are my personal enemies, they are still American citizens so we will do our job to protect them. Maybe they will understand what the CIA does and get off Robert’s back and give him the respect and the support he needs to do his job; just like the Marines need funding and support to do their jobs.

Massey clarified, The President wants to keep Robert out of this situation. He wants someone to take a group of mercenaries in, and eliminate those people who plan to assassinate our people.

Standing up, Clay angrily responded, "I am NOT an assassin! I am offended that he or you would suggest something like that! Yes, I have killed people, but I have never murdered anyone and I don’t plan to start now. If the President wants someone murdered, send him to the mafia and see if they will do it. I certainly will not take on a job where they think I will murder anyone. If I am confronted and I have to protect myself, yes I will protect myself and my men. We did use snipers in the war, but this isn’t war. You go and tell the President if he wants me to take some action to protect his henchmen and hatchet men, the only way I will participate is if he, or you, contacts Robert and he wants me to be involved. Then I will be available. To take on a job like this, sure I
