From Drums to Harp: The Story of Drummer and Harpist Robert M. Garcia
()
About this ebook
. . . The fact that Robert was able to move over to the harp is a sign that he always had a pitched-instrument player nestled within his musical gift. It is a great blessing that he was able to express this part of his musical personality later in his career. The fact that he enjoyed such success at this is clearly a testament to the versatility and depth of his musical talent.

NOTES
Acknowledgments
I am grateful to Ellen Williams, Robert Garcia’s mother, for providing me with early photographs of Robert along with his early biographical information, from which I selected material for use in this book.
I thank the jazz singers and musicians in Tampa-St. Petersburg, Clearwater, Lakeland, and elsewhere in the Tampa Bay area; as well as in Tallahassee, Gainesville, and other areas of Florida. My thanks also to those musicians based in Memphis, Tennessee; Denver, Colorado; and other cities at press time who shared with me their thoughts about Robert Garcia the man and Robert Garcia the musician. Their comments, some of which are quoted on the following pages, have helped to make this book a treasure.
Finally, I thank my sister and editor, Dorothy C. Colding of Hyattsville, Maryland, for her invaluable expertise. With her years of professional experience and deep insight, Dottie inspired and encouraged me as I worked on this wonderful project.
Author’s Foreward
My purpose for writing this book was not to produce a full-fledged biography, but rather to provide the highlights of Drummer and Harpist Robert M. Garcia’s life and music career. In keeping with my purpose, I focused on three areas: (1) his amazing musical talent and accomplishments, including switching from drums to harp as his instrument of choice late in his career; (2) his spiritual legacy, which was a combination of positive energy, good values, and love; and (3) his concrete legacy.
It was my privilege and pleasure as Robert Garcia’s wife to witness and experience his masterful and versatile playing of the xylophone, the vibraphone, the conga drums, the drum set, and the grand harp in our home and in myriad public venues.
It was a blessing for me to develop a greater love of music as a direct result of being Robert’s
