The day had been a strenuous one for Tom and he was happy to be performing the last task of a long, hard day of work on the Walking Eagle Golf Course. The various tasks that day included raking sand traps, reconstructing the banks of one rather large sand trap on a par five on the back nine and weed eating the life out of what seemed like miles of ornery scrub on the banks of one of the tributaries of Virginia’s James River.
His final responsibility entailed pulling flags, locking up restrooms and the general buttoning up of the golf course for the night ahead. While performing these duties Tom, who had been Golf Course Maintenance Superintendent for just over six years, would inspect turf areas on and around the greens, also on the tee boxes and do spot checks of the fairway turf as well. Walking Eagle G. C. was a public track owned by a group of investors so Tom’s budget allowed for only two full time seasonal employees and two more part-time retirees who helped out all year long. Therefore, Tom had to put in many, many hours doing a little bit of everything. It was a life he had chosen during his tenure as a caddy and cart boy at his local country club in Lancaster, PA where he grew up and learned to love the idea of nurturing and maintaining a golf course. He took that idea to Turf Management school and eventually landed a job in the golf course maintenance business and shortly thereafter became a Superintendent.
Tom became very familiar with his golf course by working it and playing it. He came to know all of the course’s idiosyncrasies. That familiarity cost him his first and only marriage and left him somewhat lonely at times, but he could always come back to his course. She would always be there for him. And contrary to his lack of control during his lone attempt to marry someone other than his work, Tom had control over everything on his golf course. Obviously, Mother Nature would throw the occasional curve ball such as droughts, hurricane force winds, ice storms and the like to remind him who was boss, but otherwise, Tom controlled everything tee to green and in between.
However, this evening Tom would experience something that transcended golf, golf course maintenance, and all that goes with it.
As he approached the fifth tee box Tom noticed a single golfer carrying clubs and walking from the fourth green to the fifth tee box. He realized that it was a female dressed immaculately in top of the line golf clothes and that she carried herself in a manner that belied an understanding and high level of experience with the game of golf. She was wearing a broad brim visor and that made it difficult for Tom to see her face clearly enough to try to determine if she was a regular patron or not.
He could tell that her hair was tied in a bun and that it was jet black. She was roughly 5’ 5" tall and he estimated her weight at only 110 pounds. She stepped to the tee area and as Tom approached in his maintenance cart he slowed down and stopped roughly 15 yards from the tee to allow her the courtesy of peace and quiet while teeing off.
Number five was a 329 yard par four from the lady’s tee that demanded a long straight drive to a relatively tight landing area and then the hole required an accurate approach shot into a smallish, undulating green with bunkers on each side. The hole also had the first of two on-course restrooms that Tom had to check, clean and lock up. Tom took pride in maintaining these facilities in as pristine condition as possible. People remember the little things about golf courses. Service, convenience, and other amenities are a major part of those little things.
At this point the relatively young looking lady pulled a metal wood out of her stand bag and removed the head cover. She did this without any acknowledgement of the fact that Tom was sitting just a few yards away watching very intently. She stepped to the teeing area and rather than lean over to tee up her ball, she squatted down and very gingerly place the ball on the tee. Tom could tell now that she was quite the physical specimen. Her legs were strong, muscular and tan. Her belly was flat and she seemed to be in excellent all around condition. Women’s golf apparel had only recently begun to flatter the kind of body that this woman possessed and she wore it all very well. She had on what Tom would characterize as a Skort,
or a combination of a skirt and shorts. The short skort was black and it accentuated her athletic legs very well. Her blouse was a brand name variety, bright and colorful, and Tom couldn’t wait to see her belly when she followed through on her tee ball because it was obvious her blouse was almost too small for her upper body that included substantial breasts. Substantial enough that a certain TV golf commentator might have found it very nearly impossible for this young lady to swing around them.
Nevertheless, she addressed the ball and proceeded to put a powerful move on it and sent the ball rocketing off the tee straight and true. It had that urgency that comes from a knowledgeable swing. Eventually her ball landed dead in the middle of the fairway approximately 220 yards out. At that point she bent down, picked up her tee, and then turned toward Tom and offered the first recognition of his presence. Her smile nearly knocked Tom out of his cart. It carried an appreciation for his courtesy but something else was in that smile as well. It almost seemed to hold some sort of mischievousness in it.
Tom was wondering if he was imagining things in feeling that the smile came across as somewhat flirtatious. She was a very attractive woman, probably in her late 20’s and of Asian descent. By now Tom was wondering what she was doing on his golf course, alone, at this late hour of the day. Regardless, of all the things that were running through his head, he returned the smile as casually as he could and offered a congratulatory golf clap. Then, torn between feeling awkward or just nervous, Tom hit the accelerator on his cart and proceeded down the fairway. He stayed within the confines of the fescue rough and motored on toward the bathroom behind the fifth green.
Halfway down the fairway Tom caught himself and wondered if he should have offered the young lady a ride. Then he rethought that; firstly because he didn’t want to become presumptuous about some chance meeting on a golf course and secondly because his cart was not the most attractive alternative to walking a fairway. It was stained with mulch, sand, soil, fertilizer, herbicides, pesticides, etc. All the makings for a romantic ride down a golf fairway with a dirty, sweaty, mid – 30 year old golf course superintendent. Anyway, he proceeded on and then another thought hit him.
