CHAPTER 1
There was an old wooden hut that could be found on the flat top of a hill in the village that was called Bedolia. A couple (Sorne and Zara) lived inside who loved each other dearly, and desperately wanted children. Every day they walked down the hill to the market, just to see the other people’s children. Sometimes they loved to play with them, but they wished to have their own child. They kept wishing for twenty years.
One morning a woman with a small brown bag knocked on their door. Although she was a stranger, they welcomed her into their hut. The strange woman was wearing a long gray dress and had a scarf tied around her head. She had a sad look on her face. It seemed that she was worried about something. She stayed silent as she went to sit at the table on a little wooden stool, and then she said with trembling lips, I know you have been wishing for something for a long time, and I brought a gift for you that can make your wish come true.
Sorne and Zara didn’t say anything. They just looked at each other with uneasy faces.
Do you want to wish for something?
the woman asked Zara.
Zara started to walk toward the window. She could not think of anything at that moment, but after a short bit of silence, she turned and met Sorne’s eyes. She remembered her wish.
I want to know. Where did you get that gift that you want to give to us?
Sorne asked the woman before Zara spoke.
A woman came to my house like I came to yours now,
said the strange woman as she was looking down at the bag. She told me everything she knew about this gift, and told me to make a wish. I felt weird at first when I saw it, but I accepted it anyway. A few days later, I began to see many surprises every day and finally my wish came true.
Zara moved quickly in circles around the room as she was staring at the bag. From the time that the strange woman came into her house, she had feelings in her heart. She was jumping at the chance to make her wish.
Sorne could not believe what the strange woman was saying, but before he asked her to leave his house, he asked, Since your wish came true, why do you want to give away that special thing that you are talking about? I don’t understand you at all. If I believed in the gift, I would not give it away.
I cannot keep it anymore. I have to give it to someone so they can be happy too,
said the woman.
Zara jumped in, Show us the gift, I want to see it.
The strange woman, not waiting to be asked twice, quickly opened the bag and took out the gift. This is a flower. You may make your wish now,
she said as she looked at Zara.
Sorne started to laugh and said, This is a flower? I don’t believe it. You are calling this a gift?
The woman became very sad when she saw Sorne was laughing. The gift that she wanted to give to them, it didn’t look like anything special or something amazing. It was just a stick as thin as a pencil about eight inches long resting in the cup.
She took a deep breath and said, It will improve later on, and you will be surprised with it.
She tried very hard to make them take the flower.
Zara believed everything the strange woman said. As soon as the strange woman had opened the bag Zara had already made her wish. She could not let go of that special gift which she was so happy to hear about.
It was hard for Sorne and Zara to believe in something that was impossible, but after they accepted the gift, a few days later, it started to change their lives. Zara become pregnant, just as they had hoped.
The unbelievable gift did make their wish of many years come true.
After nine months, Sorne and Zara had a baby boy in their house, and they named him Lanti. He was the best thing that had ever happened to them. He was a beautiful child. Everybody loved him, especially his mom and dad. Every time Sorne walked down the hill to the market with Lanti, the people stopped to look at Lanti and were very happy to see him, but they were also very concerned about the strange light was shining from the inside of that family’s hut at night. Even though they were curious, no one was willing to go near the house to find out what was going on.
Zara never left her house alone since her wish had come true. She stayed inside and cooked good meals for Sorne and Lanti every day.
Lanti grew up and was now 11 years old. He spent most of his time working and playing at the market and he really worked hard to help his dad make a living. He was too young to work much, but the important thing was that he had lots of fun. He never really felt ill, at least not until one day Zara decided to go to the market with him and Sorne.
A woman who lived at the bottom of the hill in the small house was looking out her window. She saw them leave and decided she would go into their hut to find out where the light was coming from. She waited until they were out of sight before heading up to their hut. When she reached the hut she stood at the door but got a feeling that she should not go inside. She quickly opened the door and went inside even though she wanted to turn back.
As soon as she entered she saw a wondrous sight. She started rubbing her eyes and after a minute left the hut and fell to the ground. She became scared when she realized that she couldn’t see anything around her. She started to scream as she realized that she was now blind.
After a short time Sorne and Zara returned with Lanti. Sorne was walking very fast caring Lanti in his arms and Zara was following them. Lanti was not feeling good. He was having trouble moving his arms and legs, and his face was burning up.
Before they reached their hut, Zara heard something moving behind the bushes. She stopped and looked. She saw the woman sitting on the ground, crying and wiping her face and she was burning up. Immediately Zara asked her, What is wrong with you lady?
The woman did not know it was Zara because she couldn’t see her, but she told her the truth. She had been in Zara’s house saw something that made her blind and ill. When Zara heard her words, she almost fell on the ground from fear. Immediately she grabbed the woman’s arm and said, Come with me into my house, I will help you,
and took her into her house. A minute later Zara came out of her house holding the
