About this ebook
In the art world, law enforcement is often portrayed as an abusive institution. However, the writing of peace officer Corbet Dean has deeply affected many of the experts:
"Corbet transcends stereotypes, shifts paradigms, and genuinely reaches.
Him and faith, they've got the same hunger-punch."
-Buddy Wakefield, Individual World Poetry Champion
"Corbet Dean is an example of slam's original intention: to give a voice to
people from all walks of life, and to find a choir of truth in what we all say."
-Marc Smith, founder of the Poetry Slam
"Very few poets have been down his road. No one else can tell his
stories. Corbet has a voice that goes back in time, to those moments
we avoid and forget. He goes there so we don't have to. And if you do
go, he's willing to stand with you and be the light. If you don't get
Corbet Dean, you're probably lost. This here is one of my favorite humans.
Let him guide you."
-Mighty Mike McGee, Individual World Poetry Champion
A Collection of Crime Scenes provides compelling stories about love, philosophy, and law enforcement. By communicating the heart and detail of such complex issues, Corbet Dean offers an unforgettable glimpse at urban life through the eyes of a police officer.

A COLLECTION OF CRIME SCENES
After working for several years as a criminal investigator,
I understand the limitations of photography.
For instance, a snapshot can only define for me
the reflections that were frozen
from one suspended second in time.
Pictures are vulnerable.
They are susceptible to distortion and dependant upon light
to focus any object drenched in darkness.
Most importantly, photographs offer me
only a single, isolated perspective
on any crime scene I seek to study.
Consequently, the good investigator must always agree
to dig deeper into the details of every picture.
By wading through the dark waters of emotion
and moving past the distractions of obvious images,
each investigator understands
truth is waiting
in those startling, subtle accents of light and shadow
that color the corners of every picture.
By offering you the following stories,
I expose you to some of my favorite photographs.
Now you are the detective.
Digest these details carefully.
I’m confident the more intently you inspect them,
the more substance you will see.
Webster defined photography as
"The art of producing images on sensitized surfaces
by the action of radiant energy."
I know of no better definition
to describe good poetry.
LETTER MY DAD NEVER GAVE ME
Yes, I am a police officer,
but I’m not going to help you become one, too.
If you think my job is fun, son, you really need to know
that every single cop
becomes an asshole!
Believe me, I didn’t start that way.
Back on my graduation day, I raced to the academy
to join my new, dark blue family.
Like an infantry of wide-eyed, wannabe soldiers,
we shaved our heads, then glared at the sun;
like a flock of fuzzy eaglets, we were all overanxious
