Short chapters, heavily illustrated, chronicle the everyday adventures of a funny and spirited Pakistani American girl. Mistakes are made, frustrations happen, but thoughtfulness leads to success. It's just a bright, lovely book.

diverse children's beginning chapter book (Pakistani-American Muslim second-grader).
The illustrations are cute and appealing and we definitely need more diverse characters like Yasmin, but the story was not as funny or entertaining as other beginning chapter books and I'm afraid a lot of younger readers (especially the struggling ones) will lose interest and stop reading--the copy I borrowed from the library had pencil markings along the words for the first couple episodes, but none after.
Nice glossary and backmatter at the end of the book, especially for those kids who are less familiar with Pakistani/Muslim culture. I am looking forward to seeing more from Yasmin.

Funny and cute this reminded me of a younger Ramona Quimby story. Will definitely be buying for our niece; it's full of kid adventures!

Early chapter book featuring Yasmin, a sweet, thoughtful and sassy second grader.
There are 4 stories in the collection, with each story having just 3 chapters. Yasmin has a particular problem in each story and it is resolved in a positive way by the end of chapter 3.
Lots of colorful illustrations to go along with the text. Perfect for a beginning chapter book reader.

This is a really great beginning chapter book for early readers (Kindergarten-first grade). Yasmin is a Pakistani child who is creative, insightful, and problem-solves in the stories in this book. The stories feature elements of her everyday life -- a trip to the park, time with grandparents, art projects, etc. It is great for seeing a child of color in everyday situations (not just in civil rights or historic text).

The stories are short and a good length for a read-aloud or independent reading.

Yasmin The Explorer

CHAPTER 1

Ancient Maps

One afternoon Yasmin sat reading with Baba.

A long time ago, explorers used big paper maps to find their way, Baba said.

What’s an explorer? asked Yasmin.

Someone who discovers new places. An adventurer, Baba said.

Yasmin looked at the maps in Baba’s book. There were straight roads and curvy roads. There were lakes and rivers and forests.

I want to be an explorer! she said.

Well, then, the first thing you’ll need is a map, Baba replied.

Yasmin clapped her hands. I’ll make a map of our neighborhood.

Good idea, Baba said.

Yasmin found crayons and paper. She drew their house. Down the street was the market. Near that was the park.

"This is excellent, jaan!" Baba said, using his sweet name for her.
