    Deadly Passion - K.C. Rice

    CHAPTER 1

Mortar rounds going off all around them, the constant pinging of bullets ricocheting off the Humvee, thick dark smoke blocking the light from the sun, making it seem night. I can’t see a fucking thing Sam, where the hell is that fire coming from? Get on the horn and get us some fucking backup? Major Mathews yells over his shoulder. Command this is Alpha Squad 3, we’re up to our asses and elbows in fire here, we need backup stat! First Lieutenant Samuels yells in his radio. We got hajjis at three o’clock. Sargent Landry yelled, IN COMING...TAKE COVER!! As the unmistakable shrill of an RPG comes screaming overhead. The heat from the explosion so intense it sucked the very breath from Wil’s lungs. Hearing the cries and screams of his team, he gasps for air as he fights the darkness that is beginning to overtake him. Off in the distance he hears the faint swirl of the choppers as everything goes dark.

Wil shoots up out of bed; body trembling, covered in sweat, and his head pounding. FUCK! The same damn dream again. When the hell will it stop? Picking up his phone to check the time.  Throwing his head back closing his eyes he sighs, Shit, four o’clock- who needs sleep anyway, its way over rated?  Raising back up and swinging his legs over the side of the bed, running his hands through his hair, he takes a deep breath and reaches down to pick up his sweats. Pulling them on and heading for the bathroom he stops to look in the mirror. Shaking his head at his reflection he smirks, Man you look like shit. Getting his hands wet and scrubbing them over his face, moving over to the toilet he takes a leak and heads toward the coffee maker. Flipping it on, as he takes a seat at the desk in his hotel room.

    Pulling out his latest file.

Lisa Meadows, Caucasian, twenty- five years of age, last seen at McGivney’s Bar and Grill, hands bound. C.O.D- strangulation. No sign of sexual abuse. Daughter of former CIA officer, James Meadows.

Samantha Green, Caucasian, twenty-four years of age, last seen on West Second Street, hands bound. C.O.D- strangulation. No sign of sexual abuse. Childhood friend of Lisa Meadows.

"What did you two girls have in common that cost you your lives?

Samantha, how did you know Lisa? Wil asks himself as he looks over their autopsy photos and reports. Remembering his promise to her Dad, I promise General, I won’t stop ‘til I find the person responsible.

Discouraged, he rubs his eyes then runs his hands through his hair, What. Am. I. Missing? Drumming his fingers on the desk top as he thinks. Stopping long enough to reach for the coffee maker and a cup, as his phone rings.

Swiping his phone, yeah, Detective Mathews here, he says, shit. Where? I’m on my way. Jerking his jeans off the chair and quickly changing out of his sweats, he steps swiftly into his boots as he pockets his phone and reaches for his shoulder holster, barreling through the door as he slips his jacket on.

    ––––––––

Sarah Knight, Homicide Detective; having been raised in a house full of men, her dad a Police Sargent and two brothers, police detectives in their hometown. She couldn’t help but follow suit and become a cop as well, hell after all it’s the only life she’s ever known.

Pulling an all-nighter, yawning, I’ll have a Vente with three shots please. Turning away from the barista and looking out the rain slick window, Sarah takes a deep breath recalling the facts from the other two cases, Who the hell are you and why these girls, what do they have in common? she asked herself. The barista calls to her pulling her out of her thoughts, Ma’am, handing her her coffee. Oh, thanks. she forces a smile.

Pulling her collar up tighter around her neck, Sarah shivers as she steps out into the cold rain. The street’s lit up with blue and red flashing lights; reporters swarming everywhere like a bunch of damn bees. Police officers trying to push the spectators back with barriers. ‘What a fucking mess!’

Shivering once again as a raindrop falls perfectly down her shirt. She sips her coffee and tries to maneuver through the crowd all the while trying to dry the cold raindrop as it continues its cold descent between her breasts. Rounding the corner to the alley and her latest crime scene, she plows into a wall of rock hard muscle. Causing her to drop her life line. She watches in horror as it falls to the ground splashing her pant legs. Her left hand still down the front of her shirt, between her breasts.

Damn it, I just got that! Not realizing she’s actually growling, Sarah huffs, as she looks up into the most gorgeous golden face she’s ever seen. Damn! she murmurs as Wil jumps back in an attempt to keep the coffee from splashing him as well, mesmerized as he looks down to study his new partner. Dark brown hair pulled away into a pony tail, reveal the most exquisite face he’s seen. Staring down he looks into two deep dark chocolate eyes that are piercing him with scorn. A sweet button nose and lips..... He’s sure would be plump and kissable if they weren’t so tightly puckered in the scowl, which happens to be absolutely adorable.

Bitchy from being up nearly twenty-four hours, not to mention losing her coffee and plowing into what- another reporter? Yeah he’s definitely sex on a stick but still. Shaking her head, coming back to reality,  Who the hell do you think you are and why are you contaminating my crime scene?! Sarah bellows. She can feel the smoke billowing from her ears, as she struggles to remain pissed, instead of falling into this gorgeous man’s trance. Closing her eyes, - ‘these fuckin reporters.

Stepping back a little more, Wil looks down at Sarah with a smirk on his face, noticing her hand is still inside her shirt. Clearing his throat, hum hum, pointing at her left hand. Realization hits Sarah as she quickly puts her hand down to her side. Feeling her neck and face warm as the color slowly crawls up. Wil Mathews.... Detective Wil Mathews. Your new partner. His smile quickly vanishes as Sarah shoots him a fierce look. His extended hand drops to his side. Taking another step back as he soaks in the simple beauty of his new partner-‘Damn not only is she hot but she’s feisty as hell too...What. A. Combination’. Placing his killer smile across his face, as he absorbs the energy coming off her.

Feeling her cheeks redden from blood pressure this time. Sarah replies, What the fuck do you mean, ‘my new partner’, I work solo. I don’t do partners! Who the hell authorized this anyway? she demands as she stomps off toward the crime scene.

A little laugh slips past his lips as he cocks his brow, rushing after her he spits out, Well I hope to hell I can change that Sweetheart. I was called in to assist you in this investigation. I’m a specialist.

Stopping, turning abruptly, Wil nearly plows Sarah down, in his attempt to stop that from happening, he grabs her by the arms to steady himself. Squinting her eyes blazing like fire, Oh really? And just what is it you do that is so special, that you’ve been put on MY case, Detective? Sarah spitting out the words as though they are venom.  Looking slowly up and down her body, appreciating the view and with that shit-eating grin he smirks, Well now, you play your cards right, and I might just show you what it is I do that’s so special. Chuckling he adds, Of course, we’ll have to get to know one another a little better first. He winks.

Ugh, such a fucking ass hat. Sarah mumbles as she walks around him. Attempting to ignore the fire that’s burning deep within her core.  Liam, we got time of death yet? Sarah asks, as she dredges through the puddles to where the victim lays. The medical examiner looks up at her and smiles, just finishing my preliminary exam Sarah. With the cold and rain, I’m calculating time of death around 1:00-1:30. Wrists were bound, no signs of sexual assault, C.O.D. - strangulation.  Sarah squats down for a better look, Fuck! This is our third Vic in the last three weeks, same M.O. We haven’t been able to tie the Vics together though. Sarah says over her shoulder, surprised when she doesn’t see Detective Mathews hovering over her as expected. Where the hell did he go?  Son of a bitch, some specialist he is. Shaking her head she turns and continues searching the Vic.

Here ya go- peace offering, Wil smiles as he walks up to her and extends a fresh cup of coffee to her. How about a redo? I’m Detective William Mathews, He says with the sexiest smile she’s seen in a long time. My friends call me Wil. Standing, Sarah begins to feel her resolve melt as she smiles.  ‘Damn it if he isn’t a fine specimen. And god those lips, and dimples too, ahhhh. ‘ Taking the coffee from him, she quickly realizes what she’s done and attempts to change her expression, but not before Wil notices it and smiles back. Closing her
