ANANSI
THE TRICKSTER SPIDER
––––––––
The wisdom of the spider is greater than that of all the world put together
––––––––
(Traditional African proverb)
INTRODUCTION
––––––––
If you've read my first collection of Anansi stories (Anansi the Trickster Spider) then you'll know how cunning, clever and cruel he can be. You'll also know that his tricks do not always go as planned and sometimes those he tries to trick get their own back. In this collection of eight short stories Anansi is trickier than ever and manages to outwit Elephant, Goat, Zebra, Monkey, Hippo and even the Sun-God.
I hope you enjoy reading them as much as I enjoyed researching and writing them.

HOW ANANSI MISSED FOUR PARTIES ON ONE NIGHT
––––––––
Anansi loves to go to parties. The problem is, he doesn't get invited to many. The animals are so used to his tricks that they tend to forget to invite him. But this doesn't stop Anansi inviting himself and going anyway.
Now one day as Anansi sat in his web enjoying the warmth of the sun, he noticed some of the animals chatting under the great meeting tree. Anansi was sure they were planning something fun. So he crept down from his web and hid behind a nearby bush so he could listen. Unfortunately, the bush wasn't near enough and the only thing Anansi managed to overhear was the word 'party’.
A party,
said Anansi. How am I going to find out who is holding it and when? I'll have to sit here and listen all day.
So Anansi sat hidden behind the bush. But when Rabbit and Turtle were talking the wind whisked their voices away and Anansi missed everything they said. When Hippo and Hyena were talking Goat was noisily munching on the bush’s sweet leaves. When Lion and Eagle were talking Frog started to croak and her huge croak drowned out Lion's and Eagle's voices.
Anansi sighed. At this rate I'll never find out who's having a party. I may as well go back to my web.
Creeping back to his web, Anansi thought about how he could find out when the next party was happening. Finally, he smiled and called some of his children.
Now,
he told them, the other animals are planning a party and I don't want to miss it. I want you to find out who is going to have a party and when.
Yes, Papa,
replied Anansi's children.
Anansi waited and waited, but his children didn't come back. Just as the sun was setting Anansi was about to give up when his eldest son returned.
Papa, I overheard Rabbit planning a party, but he can't decide when to have it,
he said.
You’re a good son,
said Anansi. Come and find me tomorrow. I have a small task for you.
Just as his eldest son was leaving his youngest son returned.
Papa, I overheard Eagle planning a party, but he's not decided when it will be.
You’re a good son,
said Anansi. "Come and find me tomorrow. I have a small task
