About this ebook

The night was hot and overcast, the sky red, rimmed with the lingering sunset of mid-summer. They sat at the open window, trying to fancy the air was fresher there. The trees and shrubs of the garden stood stiff and dark; beyond in the roadway a gas-lamp burnt, bright orange against the hazy blue of the evening. Farther were the three lights of the railway signal against the lowering sky. The man and woman spoke to one another in low tones.

H G Wells

H.G. Wells (1866–1946) was an English novelist who helped to define modern science fiction. Wells came from humble beginnings with a working-class family. As a teen, he was a draper’s assistant before earning a scholarship to the Normal School of Science. It was there that he expanded his horizons learning different subjects like physics and biology. Wells spent his free time writing stories, which eventually led to his groundbreaking debut, The Time Machine. It was quickly followed by other successful works like The Island of Doctor Moreau and The War of the Worlds.

"Wierd, freakish, flesh-creeping horror! From the master-mind of the black art..." goes the cover blurb. Perhaps something from the pen of Dennis Wheatley? Or Alastair Crowley? The last thing you'd expect would be a collection of stories from H.G. Wells! Never mind, what you have here is a 1965 collection that the publisher is trying to make sound more sexy than it is. It's a reasonable collection and the title story, "The Cone", is rather nasty - a man whose wife has been unfaithful to him lures his rival into a steelworks, where he throws him into a blast furnace. So much for Wells the advocate of free love...But this is as much a gem - and gets its four stars from me - because of the quirky 60s packaging!

He does not suspect? said the man, a little nervously.

Not he, she said peevishly, as though that too irritated her. "He thinks of nothing but the works and the prices of fuel. He has no imagination,
