Summary of 'The Girl Who Wrote in Silk' by Kelli Estes
Present Day
Inara Erickson is a college graduate who has just landed her father’s dream job at Starbucks and he is really proud of her for it. Inara is bright, fearless, kindhearted and spirited. Inara has spent the last seven years getting a business degree and working on her career. Her great-aunt Dahlia (whom Inara was really close to while growing up) passed away and left her Rothesay Estate in Orcas Island. Inara travels with her older sister Olivia to the estate to check things before selling the estate even though Dahlia wanted to convert the estate into a bed and breakfast. It is a big step for Inara to travel back to the island because the last time she was there, she had a fight with her mother and her mother had an accident afterwards and died. Inara has always secretly blamed herself for her mother’s death. When Inara gets there, she feels herself being pulled to the idea of staying there and converting the estate into a boutique hotel. She ends up hurting herself while being stuck in the carpet runner and the stairs reveal a pile of fabric. They find a sleeve with intricate threads forming amazingly clear pictures. Inara cannot help being drawn by the sleeve and embarks on a journey to find its secret, which immerses her in the world of Mei Lien, a Chinese girl who was driven from her home in Seattle in the late 1800s and lived in the same house as Dahlia at a specific point in time.
