Form The Resistance - Daylin Knight

    Chapter One

It was a day like any other, when out of nowhere, just before classes ended at three, a massive explosion ripped through the mountains surrounding the school. The building and the surrounding areas shook with an intense ferocity not experienced since the massive quake twenty-three years earlier destroyed most of the city. Huge boulders and chunks of steel rained down as panicked students screamed in utter terror. Desks and students flew into nearby walls as the blast tore through the school.

Everyone, get out of the building in an orderly fashion...but, quickly. Alucard said, as calmly as possible, to his classmates.

A fellow student just stared in horror. Alucard, your face!

Alucard touched his hand to his face for a second, before pulling it away, and it was soaked in blood. Don’t worry about me, Demetrius. You and Aloysius, help get the others to safety. Focus most on the young ones. They can’t help themselves as well as we can. He said as he removed his shirt to wipe the blood out of his eyes.

    Right. Aloysius nodded.

Alucard ran down some nearby stairs toward the lower levels, directing others toward the exits as he ran. He had to duck to get through a collapsing doorway. Despite the typical ten-foot-high doorway, his 6’ 2" figure barely made it through. As he passed by broken windows, he could see that a full-blown blizzard had begun swirling outside.

Well, that’s just great. Alucard thought aloud.

The building was still shaking violently from the blasts and resulting earthquake. Snow was pouring in through the newly formed holes in the roof at countless points throughout the building. Once he got down to the forty first floor, he heard a deep, guttural scream.

Alucard ran toward the voice. Hey. Who’s there?

My name is Orlat. I am trapped under the stairs at the end of the hall. The voice said in the deep, guttural voice from before.

Alucard continued running in the direction of the voice. Ok. I’m here to help.

Once he got to the end of the hallway, after dodging falling objects, he moved the various debris off the kid. He was maybe fifteen, but towered over Alucard by at least a foot.

Alucard yelled around the sounds of buckling steel and directed Orlat toward a nearby hole in the wall. Get out of here. The building could come down at any moment.

    Thank you. Orlat ran off.

When he got down to the thirty second floor, he heard someone screaming and rushed over to where the sound was coming from. There was a young girl crouched over in the corner.

Hey. You gotta get outta here. Alucard walked toward her.

    I can't. I'm too scared.

You are fine. I won't let anything happen to you.

The girl slowly walked toward Alucard. When she reached him, he grabbed her and directed her toward the stairs as Demetrius ran by. She joined his small group and ran toward the exit. After checking the remaining rooms, Alucard continued down the stairs to the fourteenth floor...where he was stopped by a multitude of screams coming from a nearby classroom...and most of them sounded really young. Someone! Anyone! Please help! Is anyone there?

Alucard ran toward the screams. It was Mrs. Haynes’ kindergarten class. Boulders had fallen through the roof and were blocking the door while a small fire had broken out in the back of the classroom. To top all that off, the ceiling in the room was bowing due to the massive amounts of snow piling up on the higher floors.

Mrs. Haynes, back everyone away from the door and the flames. I’m gonna get you guys out.

Bless you, Alucard. Class, come with me. She corralled the kids to the safety of an opposite corner.

Without thinking, Alucard lifted a huge boulder and tossed it aside like it was nothing. After a very brief shock from this feat, he made quick work of the remaining rocks. Unfortunately, by the time all the rocks were removed, the fire had spread, engulfed the doorway, and was quickly heading toward the class. Alucard could see that the ceiling couldn’t hold much more weight.

    Okay, I’m coming in.

Alucard, you can’t. The fire is too hot.

By this point, all the children were in tears and screaming for their parents.

I have no choice. Stand back. Alucard replied.

He ran through the raging inferno and into the near destroyed classroom. Once inside, he quickly grabbed the teacher’s desk and pushed it toward the flames.

Come on everyone, quickly. Alucard signaled the class toward the door.

The metal desk held the flames back long enough for the class to escape. As Alucard tried to leave, it too became engulfed.

Mrs. Haynes, get the kids to safety. I will be fine.

    But, Alucard...

    Just go!

Okay. Thank you so much. Mrs. Haynes yelled as she directed the kids down the stairs and out of the school, into the arms of waiting rescue workers.

Alucard examined the room for a minute and noticed that a small hole had begun burning above a nearby shelf. He was about to try and escape when the ceiling gave way. Snow and pieces of the ceiling came crashing through, along with desks and other objects. He dodged the collapse and without much thought, ran toward the shelf, put his hands on it, and vaulted through the hole. He burst through the damaged wall and landed perfectly in the hallway. Blood instantly began flowing from long slits running down his arms and legs.

Alucard chuckled. That hole was smaller than I thought.

He took one step and collapsed in pain. He managed to get back up and run over to the stairs. The stairs were gone, but he discovered this too late. Before he could realize what was happening, he was tumbling multiple stories down to the first floor. He landed on the hard floor as countless firefighters rushed into the hallway and an older gentleman, in full firefighter garb, ran up to him. After noticing all the blood, Alucard, you look terrible. Is this all your blood?

Hey, chief, yeah. But, I’m fine. Alucard said, weakly, while squinting to attempt to see the fire trucks through the blinding snow.

Kid, you’ve gotta get outta here. We can handle it from here.

I can’t just leave. I gotta help as much as I can. Alucard looked around at the increasing devastation.

I know, kid. Just be careful. I don’t wanna see anything happen to you.

You know I can’t leave when people are in need. Why do you think I volunteer at your station?

    I know, I know. I just worry.

Don’t worry about me. I will be fine.

The old man heard a loud ringing coming from his pocket. After fiddling for a minute to find the correct pocket, he pulled out his phone and began speaking before the person on the other line could even get a word in. Kennith, you have gotta come talk some sense into Alucard.

We are on our way to the school now. What's happening?

He's been hurt pretty badly, but won't leave. I know you raised him to be selfless, but right now, he needs to worry about himself.

We will be right there. Barry could hear the sounds of screeching tires in the background.

Okay, see you soo- the old man dropped his phone and ran toward some beams that were falling toward a group of young volunteers.

During this conversation, the building continued to burn, and the snow continued to pour in. The snow did nothing to the fire. It just made the entire situation all the more unpredictable. Another explosion had caused the ceiling to begin to collapse.

Look out! Alucard yelled as he ran toward the volunteers. Once he got close enough, he lunged and shoved them out of the way. They escaped unharmed, but the collapsing ceiling had crushed Alucard beneath tons of broken steel. The huge beams tore through his back, leaving another bloody gash.

Screams came from all around as people rushed over to get the debris off Alucard. After everything was removed, Kid, I know how you were raised, your father is my best friend. You are like a son to me, which is why I really need you to leave. It is too dangerous here, and you are too severely injured.

I’m sorry, chief. Thanks for the help, but I just can’t. Alucard ran off toward another classroom.

This kid is gonna be the death of me... The man grumbled.

In a classroom at the end of the hall, there was a young girl sitting alone, crying, with her legs caught beneath a beam. Dany, I’m coming to get you. Alucard proclaimed calmly, as he entered the room.

Please hurry, Alucard. I'm scared. She cried. I can’t feel my legs.

He got the beam off her pretty quickly and realized that there was no way that she was gonna be able to walk with that injury, so he picked her up and began walking toward the door.

At this time, the man from before walked into the classroom. Come on, Alucard. I just received word that the school has been entirely evacuated. Let’s get Danyell and ourselves outta here. They don’t know how much longer the building will be able to stand.

    Okay, chief.

As they were walking toward the door, a burning beam fell in between them.

Barry. I will be fine. Take Dany. Alucard yelled as he tossed the girl into the old man’s arms.

Barry just nodded and ran out of the classroom with Dany. Alucard began to follow, but was stopped as a huge explosion ripped through the room, immediately engulfing Alucard with enormous, scorching flames, just before the entire wing of the school collapsed atop him. Barry screamed for Alucard, but to no response, as he ran outside. He watched as the entire wing went down in a heap of burning rubble. Just as the building fully collapsed, a car pulled up next to Barry and a couple that looked to be in their thirties got out. The woman immediately burst into tears when she saw Barry, but no Alucard. Emergency crews and volunteers dug through the wreckage all night in the pitch darkness and blinding snow. Just before dawn, they removed a large section of debris and found Alucard’s lifeless body, covered in blood, and pale as a ghost.

People began crying as the paramedics got the body onto a stretcher. While checking for any signs of life, Barry noticed that Alucard’s wounds were not bleeding.

He turned to a nearby paramedic. His injuries? What do you make of this?

To be honest, it looks like his wounds have been cauterized by the flames.

So, if he wasn’t bleeding all night, he could still pull through?

It’s a long shot, but, it is definitely a possibility. He turned to another paramedic. Get him to the hospital immediately.

They rushed Alucard to Neo Snowmarsh General Hospital. Barry joined Alucard in the ambulance. The ten blocks between the school and the hospital seemed like they took forever. The young couple in the car followed behind.

When they arrived, the paramedic that rode with him got the stretcher out of the ambulance. We have got to get a better look at his wounds. Get him to Emergency Room 5, stat. A doctor passed the stretcher over to some others as he walked over to the young couple that was waiting nearby.

Karyn, how are you holding up? The doctor asked the woman.

I don’t know. Is my baby gonna make it? Karyn said, fighting back the tears. Her long brown hair was a tattered mess and her green blouse was discolored from crying all night.

We will do everything we can. He’s a strong kid.

I’m sure you will, Ehrin. The man said, hugging his wife. His short brown hair wasn’t much better off.

Thanks for the faith, Kennith. We’ll need it. Ehrin walked away.

About an hour passed with no news. Shortly thereafter, Ehrin came back out to the waiting room.

How’s my boy? Kennith asked, anxiously.

Ehrin stuttered a bit. Well, we don’t know how to explain it...he is fine. The fire sealed the wounds, so the blood loss was minimal. He has no broken bones. We tried attaching an IV, but couldn’t break the skin. While that was weird, he is doing great, but unfortunately, he is in a coma. His vitals are strong, but I think the event was just too much stress on his body and it put him into a shock induced coma. He will be fine. His wounds are healing faster than I have ever seen. You can see him now. I warn you though, he has some major scarring.

They all walked into the room where Alucard was comatose. As soon as Karyn saw the lifeless body of her only child, she lost it and fell to the ground as the tears began flowing again. Kennith had to be strong for his wife, so he fought back the tears as he attempted to comfort Karyn.

Kennith looked up at Ehrin. He looks so peaceful. How long will he be like this?

There is no way of knowing. Typically, comas do not last more than a few weeks. We will do everything we can to speed up the process and keep him as comfortable as possible.

Thank you, Ehrin. Kennith said as the tears broke free and began coming down his cheeks.

Karyn stood up and walked over to her incapacitated son. She put her hand on his shoulder and kissed his forehead. Come back to me soon, my son. I can’t lose you. I love you.

Kennith leaned in and whispered something in Alucard’s ear before giving him a kiss on his forehead as well.

You two should go home and get some rest. I will inform you immediately if anything changes.

We can’t just leave him. Karyn cried as the tears welled up again.

Honey. We’ve been nervous wrecks since the attack yesterday, let’s go home and pull ourselves together. Ehrin says that Alucard’s vitals are great. He is basically just tired, so let’s let him rest. We will come back by in the morning.

Ehrin looked at them and nodded. It took a while longer, but they were finally able to convince Karyn to go home. This would allow them to bring back some stuff from home anyway.

Alucard heard this exchange between his parents and Doctor Callahan, but all he could do was lie there. Once they left the room and turned out the lights, Alucard found himself standing in the middle of an open field.

Hello Alucard. A mysterious, beautiful, calming woman’s voice said out of nowhere.

Who are you? Where am I? The last thing I remember was throwing Dany into Barry’s arms...then I heard my parents talking to Doctor Callahan...now I am here in this field?

Who I am is of little importance right now. What is important is that you are currently in a coma.

What? So, this is like a coma dream?

To a point. But, more importantly, it is a means for me to speak to you.

I still don’t know who you are. What do you need to speak with me about?

Something terrible is coming. Something the likes of which, no living being has ever experienced. If not stopped, it will bring the end to this planet.

What? What could possibly accomplish that?

As Alucard asked this question, a weird symbol appeared on a nearby cliff face.

Is this symbol associated with the one who will destroy everything?

No. Quite the contrary. This symbol is representative of the only thing that can save the world.

    Really? What does it mean?

I can’t tell you too much right now. It could overwhelm you and hinder everything. But, what I will tell you is that you are far more powerful than you know...and you will have a definite hand in the salvation of this world.

I faintly remember my father saying that. When though? Was it just a dream?

Your father is correct, you are immensely powerful, but you have a long road ahead of you.

With that line, the field was gone and Alucard found himself floating above a huge fleet of ships. They appeared to be engaged in a massive battle. Suddenly, an immense creature launched out of the water. It stood on four massive, crab-like legs. Its humanoid body had four giant arms.  Thousands of tentacle-like appendages shot from its back and pierced through countless ships. As they began to sink, everything went fuzzy and Alucard was now floating over an island set in a sea of blue lava. At the center of the island was a massive mountain with a dragon positioned at the center within a cave. Alucard had seen a lot of dragons while driving outside of the city, but never had he seen one like this. Its scales were beautiful and prism-like. They reflected the various blue hues from the lava, the browns and greys from the rocks and dirt, the greens from nearby trees, and the whitish greyish red coming from the sun. The center of the dragon’s eyes lit up with the symbol from the cliff face. Before Alucard could even gather his thoughts on the dragon and the crazy ice blue lava, he found himself standing in a park just outside of downtown Neo Snowmarsh. He looked up to see a giant lion-spider like creature decimating the city. It was smashing through brick and steel buildings as if they were made of sticks. Its massive wings blocked out what little sunlight was coming through the evening clouds. As the beast turned to look down on Alucard, he found himself lying in a hospital bed, covered in sweat, and looking up at his father.

    Chapter Two

K aryn! Wake up! Kennith shook his wife.

Karyn jumped out of the chair and ran toward the bed to see Alucard’s eyes open for the first time in what seemed like ages.

    How are you honey?

    I’m fine.

That’s good to hear, son. You gave us quite a scare. Barry filled us in on what happened at the school. We are so proud.

I just did what you raised me to do. Alucard laughed, weakly.

You got injured pretty badly in the process.

Yeah, but I got some cool scars. Alucard let out another weak laugh.

By this point, Ehrin had entered the room. Kennith and Ehrin laughed and Karyn let out some tears. I’m just glad you’re okay. I don’t know what I’d do if anything happened to you.

    "I
