Sharing Thoughts
Every few years I feel the urge to write another book of fiction with a physics twist. Partly, it’s a challenge to myself—whether I can still do this. Mostly, it is a compelling desire to create a new dedication to our awesome cosmos and the incredible activity that goes on at the subatomic level—deep inside matter.
So, amidst the daily routine of weekday work, including many technical documents, I indulged my dream to write again on weekends, and Where Did the Hills Go?
was born.
But the world of books and publishing has changed dramatically since my other books were published. Many doubts and fears surfaced rapidly! I had not written fiction in over a decade. And then my fiction always has science entwined in it. What is my genre? Would I be able to handle social media and e-books?
I decided to attend a Writer’s Conference to explore the era of e-books and print. It was somewhat reassuring to find many others who were also tremulous about sharing their creations.
Returning home, I discussed the elements of my mystery novella with many and was delighted by their enthusiasm. Cheered on by continued encouragement from family and friends—I am sharing my creation and I hope you will like it. I will welcome your input to shape my next book.
Please do read the ‘Closing Note’ AFTER you’ve read the story for a peek at the science behind the fiction.
About the Author
Lali Gupta Chatterjee is a physicist and an author. Love of science and a strong commitment to associated expertise have been the driving forces behind a multi-dimensional, scientific career. Lali’s professional experience includes managing federal science programs in particle physics, computing, and broader computational science areas; building partnerships and collaborations; science communications and outreach; scientific publishing and editorial leadership; advanced research and teaching in particle/nuclear and related physics; and more than fifty scientific papers focused on particle/nuclear/muon physics and their intersections with astro/atomic/molecular physics.
Connecting physics with people and events has been a way of life for Lali and continues to drive her explorations in the world of science-inspired fiction. Her books, talks, and teaching provide a connection between physics and people, fostering understanding of the relationship between science and the surrounding culture. Lali’s first science-inspired fiction with a cast of sub-atomic characters was published in 1995 by Roli Books with a foreword by the 1988 Nobel Laureate in Physics, Leon Lederman. Her second book connecting people to sub atomic particles was published in 2000 by Kendall Hunt Ltd.
Lali likes to write fiction with a physics twist as she enjoys her life with science.

Credits
I would like to thank family, friends, and colleagues who have read and cheered early incarnations of this novella when it was a much shorter story—Moinak, Sujata, Anita, Jim, Laura, Guenn, Clair, Ted, Melalie, Ted, and Mithu.
Special thanks to those who have persevered through the longer versions, provided valuable insight, and helped realize this experiment in science inspired fiction that I hope my readers will enjoy.
I also want to thank those who have answered questions and acquaintances who have shared my excitement about this new story.
I would like to thank Gatekeeper Press, Author Connections, and BookHive for their participation in my project.
