    Jaxon’s Second Case

It was hard to believe I had been working for the Time Crime Unit (TCU), which was part of the Magical Disturbance Division (MDD), for six months now. We investigated all the crimes and events that caused time disturbances, including thefts in the past or magical spells causing changes in our timeline.

My first case had been a magical crime involving a previous president of the United States and witches, and we had successfully restored the timeline with a few positive changes. Now it was August, and I wished I could get a new case to investigate soon, as my boss, Amanda Hass, had me arranging our library online. It was hot and humid outside, but I would have rather been investigating a crime than reading the old tomes and manuscripts and cross-referencing them in our online library. Someone had copied them, but no one had included any topics or references. It was hard to find anything because you had to browse the whole library to find something.

I glanced up from my screen as I heard the heels clicking on the floor. My boss was approaching me. I straightened my shoulders and sat up instead of leaning on my hand and slouching on the chair. I hope I gave the impression that I liked my job and was doing my best.

Amanda’s purple short-cut hair stuck up like she had pushed her fingers through it. It was her typical manner, and she did it many times a day. Usually, by the evening, her head looked like a porcupine with hairs sticking up.

She stopped by my desk and asked, How is it going?

Good. Great. I’ve made some progress. I blinked a few times.

Excellent, because you need to find a copy of an old manuscript that predicts an annihilation of this world. It could be a prophecy of an apocalypse. Be quick, though. We don’t have much time, she said.

Amanda looked worried, so I decided to ask, What’s going on? Is this a new case?

She sighed, leaned closer to me, and replied in a whisper, Sort of. It’s happening now. Look outside.

I did so, but I didn’t see anything different.

Look up in the sky, Amanda told me.

I craned my neck and looked up past the skyscrapers and gliders. The sky was reddish and purple. It was not sunset. What is that?

That's not just any approaching disaster—it's the apocalypse, the end of everything. A meteoroid the size of our Moon is hurtling towards us! Her voice quivered with fear as she continued, I need you to find a prophecy, or anything resembling it, something about the end times or Armageddon. Something has shifted, triggering this apocalyptic event. I fear someone has meddled with the past, and we're now facing the consequences. Amanda's hand trembled as she brushed her hair back nervously.

My heart sank like a stone in my chest, and a cold sweat broke out on my brow. Why do you think it's the end of the world? What evidence do we have? I demanded, the urgency in my voice matching the panic rising within me. Amanda's dire warning had shaken me to the core, leaving me desperate for answers.

She gestured to the sky and said, "Because that meteoroid was not there this morning. None of the satellites or our long-distance scanning devices saw it coming. It appeared out of nowhere, heading to Earth. The Earth’s defense system has failed if a disaster like this can approach Earth without anyone noticing it, and I
