I'm Joanna, 43, a long divorced mother of two daughters. My older one ran away at fourteen, and returned home at seventeen with a newborn son, whom I adore. My younger girl is type-one diabetic with major teenage attitude to me, to life, and to her disease. I've been juggling too many balls for too long, supporting my kids, my ex-husband (court-ordered support for him) and my pot-head mother (personal guilt-ordered support for her) by working as an elementary school teacher and vice principal. In my "time off"--AKA summer, during which school is out and teachers don't get paid, I supplement my income as a part-time librarian and part-time marina help. And now, my best friend, a nurse practitioner, tells me I've dropped more than one of those balls I juggle by confirming what I've denied to myself. Yup, I'm pregnant. I have no idea how this happened. Okay, yes, I do. I even know when, where, and who, but I also know this gossipy, tight-assed little community is going to pillory me and...what do I tell my teenager?

Judy Griffith Gill lives on Canada's west coast--the Sunshine Coast of BC--with her husband of (mumblety-five) years. Over those years, they raised two beautiful, successful daughters both of whom are married to fine men and have blessed the Gills with three grandchildren. She is writing less, but enjoying it more, along with summers afloat aboard the cabin cruiser she and her husband own. When not out boating or enjoying dock parties with friends, she grows everything from blueberries to raspberries, interspersed with herbs and plenty of flowers, on her patio. Her oldest daughter, son-in-law, and granddaughter live nearby--near enough her granddaughter willingly waters the plants when Judy is afloat.
