Der erste Roman, »Die Sünden der Väter«, erschien 1975, der 17. und bislang letzte Roman der Reihe, »Ein Tropfen vom harten Zeug«, wurde 2011 veröffentlicht. Im Laufe der Jahre verfasste ich auch elf Kurzgeschichten mit Scudder.
»Ein letzter Abend im Grogan's« ist die letzte der Kurzgeschichten und spielt ein paar Monate nach Matts Unterhaltung mit Mick Ballou am Ende von »Ein Tropfen vom harten Zeug«. Sie erschien bislang ausschließlich in »Die Nacht und die Musik«, meiner Sammlung aller elf Matthew-Scudder-Kurzgeschichten, erhältlich als E-Book und in einer attraktiven Taschenbuch-Ausgabe.
Lawrence Block
Lawrence Block is one of the most widely recognized names in the mystery genre. He has been named a Grand Master of the Mystery Writers of America and is a four-time winner of the prestigious Edgar and Shamus Awards, as well as a recipient of prizes in France, Germany, and Japan. He received the Diamond Dagger from the British Crime Writers' Association—only the third American to be given this award. He is a prolific author, having written more than fifty books and numerous short stories, and is a devoted New Yorker and an enthusiastic global traveler.

Wir aßen im Paris Green zu Abend, ein paar Blocks Richtung Süden von unserer Wohnung in der 9th Avenue. Ich bestellte Kalbsmilch und wunderte mich nicht zum ersten Mal, warum das Gericht so hieß, obwohl es weder weiß noch flüssig war. Elaine erklärte mir, dass Google uns darüber in weniger als dreißig Sekunden aufklären konnte. Es würde eher zwei Stunden dauern, sagte ich ihr, bis ich auf all die anderen faszinierenden Dinge geklickt hatte, die mir dabei angeboten werden würden.
Der Fisch des Tages war Alaska-Heilbutt, und das war, was sie wählte. Nach vielen Jahren als Vegetarierin hatte ein Ernährungsberater sie davon überzeugt, Fisch als Gemüse zu betrachten. Zuerst machte sie sich Sorgen, dass es das kulinarische Äquivalent zu einer Einstiegsdroge sein würde und sie, ehe sie sichs versah, Rinderknochen zerbrechen und das Mark aussaugen würde. Bis jetzt war sie nicht über ein paarmal Fisch in der Woche hinausgekommen.
Es war gegen acht, als Gary uns zu unserem Tisch brachte, und vielleicht eine Stunde später, als wir uns den Nachspeisen verweigerten und den Espresso akzeptierten. Es kommt selten vor, dass sie Kaffee trinkt, vor allem nicht so spät, und meine Überraschung musste sich auf meinem Gesicht abgezeichnet haben. »Es könnte ein langer Abend werden«, sagte sie. »Ich hab mir überlegt, dass ich dafür besser wach bleiben sollte.«
»Ich kann sehen, wie sehr du dich darauf freust.«
»Ungefähr so sehr wie du. Es wird sein wie eine Totenwache ohne Leiche. Nur dass die Totenwache gestern Abend gewesen wäre – was ist dann heute? Das Begräbnis?«
»Vermutlich.«
»Ich war immer der Ansicht, dass die irische Totenwache sehr viel Sinn ergibt. So lange Alkohol in sich hineinschütten, bis einem etwas Gutes einfällt,
