    Moments to Forget

    The thump on my bedroom wall scared me out of my sleep. Unsure of my surroundings as I awoke from a nightmare into a terrifying reality called my life. My mom’s loud outburst from my dad’s latest drunken rage came through the house like a misdirected patriot missile. His booming, loud voice towered in heightened anger as he sways back and forth with his latest thirst quenching energy drink… Whiskey. "His clothes reeked of liquor as the cologne of a drunken soul, whose claim to shelter, a box, more recognizable as a chair, in the nearest corner where he passed out.

    When I was younger I cried when he began shouting. Mom tried to shield my pain and hurt so that it would become hers. I cried myself to sleep many nights as a child. The night terrors, I experienced was of a demon, my father, that should have shown me, love. At an early age, I saw and learned of many things, I knew for sure I did not want as part of my life when I became an adult.

    My mother settled for working from home, to avoid the whispers of onlookers with sadness and judgments of her latest art of bruises, compliments of my dad. Many days she was unable to get out of bed from the pain, that bypassed her soul and consumed her spirit. The dark cloud that shaded her smile, drained the youth from her skin. The darkness of her hair, now replaced with gray highlights of pre-mature aging, and the smile that once brought me joy was now filled with tears on more days than I choose to remember.

    My time in elementary flew by with minimal good memories, significant sadness and a home life I wish never existed. I longed for the day I would smile, and excitement returned to my empty days of hope. My days seemed to be extended made up to 36 hours. Night to morning, an unbearable distance, while I sat awake listening to the silence of the darkness clouding my thoughts of a better tomorrow...
