A Personal Note From The Author:
This book has been put together by a small dedicated group based on the realisation that there simply wasn’t enough information from parents with a child on the autism spectrum who had made great gains and achievements with their child. So we decided to put together a book which interviews parents who are forward thinking, information seekers and who are not giving in. These people are special in their own right because they have the ability to provide great value to others with their wisdom. After speaking with many parents, I understand the emotions around managing child with autism. That’s why we have put this autism guide together. It will heal the pain, ease the frustration, and help you regain a sense of control. Parents who have been in your position and made significant changes are pure gold and wisdom for you.

WHY YOU SHOULD READ THIS BOOK
Hi and welcome!
You may be wondering why you would need to read this section. However, could I ask you to please resist the temptation to skip ahead because I would like to quickly share with you why this book has been created and how you can best use it to make an impact on your life.
One of the major lessons I have learned over the course of my life is that there choices in the way in which you can live your life. You can live it via constant trial and error and you can also live it via the knowledge and learning’s from other people’s experience. My initial response to these two ideas was that I must struggle and fight for everything until I got the result I was after. However, after experiencing lots of different results and varying lengths of time in achieving different results, I began to understand that other people who have gone through a similar experience can really give me invaluable wisdom.
I remember this quote from a teacher of mine that had a big impact on me: ‘Find out what people who are in the position you want to be in and have experienced what you are nervous about experiencing, and take on the lessons they have learned and the strategies and success they have had."
This book has been designed to do just that for you. A small group of us decided that there simply wasn’t enough information from parents with a child on the autism spectrum who had made great gains with their child. So we decided to put together a book based on interviews with parents who are forward thinking, information seeking and who are not giving in. These people are special in their own right because they have the ability to provide great value to others with their wisdom.
We also realised that there were thousands of parents with a child on the autism spectrum who had many unanswered questions. What if we could seek out those parents who had achieved some success and then ask them the questions that most parents want answers to?
So, that’s what we did! During this intense journey, it has been a real privilege for me to meet each of the parents featured in this book.
Well, that’s enough from me. It’s now time for you to discover the practical wisdom contained in these pages as 6 parents tell their stories. I really hope you enjoy the book as much as we have had in putting it all together.
Yours sincerely,
Timothy Stevens

"Take two minutes every day to sit quietly and breathe deeply"
My Introduction to Autism
…my husband and I got married quite young, at 21. At 23 I thought I desperately wanted to have a baby and at 26 we had our first child—a little girl. However, we then had problems having another baby and I couldn't get pregnant. I would sit in my car and look in the back seat and think, Where are my children?
I really wanted to have three little children sitting in the back, all happy, all well behaved, and all beautiful. Finally after a whole lot of testing I fell pregnant and it was fantastic. We had a little boy and it was great because he was a really easy baby. But as he grew up he just wasn't so easy any more. Life started becoming more and more difficult to us.
We finally found out what he had and life took an enormous turn because we didn't expect anything like this to ever happen.
Diagnosis
How did you find out your son was diagnosed on the Autism Spectrum?
From the age of two, his behaviour was different. It wasn't anything like what his sister was doing, it seemed a bit unusual. Everyone would just say, Oh, he's just a boy, he doesn't talk now, but boys are slower than girls, boys are different from girls, don't worry, he'll be fine.
Meanwhile he was getting more and more uncontrollable and unruly. He didn't seem to understand anything I said, and he just did weird things. I thought there was something wrong.
So I took him to the GP and he said, What's the problem?
I said, Well he's not talking.
The GP said, Well, take him to a speech therapist.
The speech therapist said, Well, he can talk, he just doesn't want to, so you've got to be tougher with him.
So I said, Oh, it's my fault, I'm a bad parent.
Meanwhile my child was throwing six or seven tantrums a day and I was still really worried about him.
We decided to book him into pre-school as he was nearly three years old. I rang up a pre-school and the pre-school director said, Tell me about your child.
I said, "Well, I think he's a
