Chapter 1
Nancy put on a black dress that always made her look very sexy, she barely used makeup, her pale skin and blue eyes made her face naturally beautiful. During the event that was to take place in the afternoon, maybe she would meet someone interesting. It was a couchsurfing meetup, people who are registered on a website in which young people from all over the world exchange and offer accommodation to travellers.
It was a big opportunity to find someone with similar interests, someone who would also like to travel around the world. This was the most important thing for Nancy, she dreamed about having a partner who could be at her side whilst she discovered Europe. Her last boyfriend turned out to be a let-down, he didn't want anything stable. It seemed difficult to find someone, maybe because in Spain, being foreign, she was seen to be a girl who wasn't looking for anything serious; this subject annoyed her a lot.
The doorbell rang, she was sure it was her friend Herminia.
‘Nancy, sorry I’m late, erm, it's just that I couldn't find the makeup I always use, and I became stressed searching for it all over my house.’
‘Don't worry, I always give you half an hour leeway.’
‘How organized, you're a machine, haha!’
‘I'm British.’
‘There's no doubt about that! You know, I've never been to something like this, it’s making me feel a bit embarrassed.’
‘Why?’ Nancy asked.
‘In a small city like Cáceres I, don't think I'm going to see any new faces.’
‘Of course you will Herminia, lots of boys from all different nationalities will come: British, Spanish and American, almost all of them teachers or language assistants.’
‘Wow! I'm sure that it will be awesome!’ She said enthusiastically.
‘We will have a great time!’ Nancy added.
The meetup took place in a bar in La Plaza de Colón, there were a lot of guys and girls, and as a teacher, she knew nearly everyone; well, some were work colleagues, although there were also people there who had nothing to do with teaching. When they arrived, the mood was very lively.
The bar was called La Abadía and they had delicious tapas. Everyone asked for pints of beer served with large croquettes and chips... this was just to start.
‘Oh my Nancy, I don’t want to get fat!’ said Herminia surprised.
‘Well, I’m really hungry, this morning I went for a run and afterwards I did yoga.’ She was disciplined with sports and doing so much exercise had made her hungry.
At that moment a work colleague approached: ‘Hi Nancy! How’s it going?’
‘How are you Franck? There are a lot of people, I’m amazed.’ There were probably around twenty or thirty people who had attended the event.
‘Ángel organized it, you know he’s a pro at these things.’ Said Franck.
‘Let me introduce you to Herminia, a friend of mine. Herminia, this is Franck, he also works at the Modern Languages School and is Irish.’
‘Pleased to meet you’ said Herminia and they gave one another two kisses on the cheek.
‘Are you from Cáceres?’ Franck asked.
‘Yes, and listen, you speak really good Spanish.’
‘Oh, thank you, excuse my accent, I think it is a bit noticeable.’ Said Franck.
‘Don’t worry, you’re perfectly understandable.’
After several pints of beer, tapas, appetizers and snacks, spirits were high. Laughter, smiles, shouts... it was night-time and La Abadía was completely full, people started to get ready to continue the party elsewhere, but they were unsure as to where to go.
‘Hey! Let’s go and get shots!’ shouted someone who approached Franck.
‘Hey guys, shall we go to the bar La Divina Comedia for some shots?’ Said the guy.
‘Good plan’ added Franck. ‘Meet my friends, Nancy and Herminia, this is Adrián.’
‘Pleased to meet you’ said Adrián.
He was very handsome, he had honey coloured eyes and an athletic body, maybe from the gym or other sports... Nancy couldn’t stop herself from looking at his bum, it was noticeable through his jeans whenever he moved, she also really liked his arms and his narrow waist which made him look slender. Without a doubt, he was the best looking out of all the couchsurfing guys.
Everyone went to La Divina Comedia, a small bar in Cáceres where they serve all kinds of weird and wonderful shots. Nancy and her friend were euphoric, the alcohol had hit, although not too hard, plus they had eaten a lot, and this helped slow them down and stop them getting too drunk.
‘Ugh, I’m not drinking any more Herminia, I’ve had enough. I don’t want to wake up ill tomorrow.’
‘Me neither, I’m tipsy, haha!’
Nancy didn’t take her eyes off Adrián, he was with an American girl called Samantha, maybe they were going out. It was a mystery, maybe ask Franck... but she didn’t want Adrián to find out that she was into him.
They got into several groups; Nancy and Herminia went with their friends to La Habana, a pub close by where they play alternative music. Once there, they started dancing. Nancy was impressed by Adrián’s dancing skills. What movement! What a body! He was too perfect to be true. Maybe Samantha was his girlfriend... or, although she doubted it, just a friend...
‘You liked Adrián, right Nancy?’
‘My gosh Herminia! Have you seen him? With his looks, his body, how well he moves.’
‘Man, what an ass he has. But he is yours my friend, he said hello to you first.’ Herminia said.
‘Herminia! You already have a boyfriend!’ Nancy said surprised.
‘Yeah, but I am a woman and he is tempting, haha!’
‘Haha! Don’t be naughty, William is a great guy.’
‘Ok, ok, I will behave boss.’
Adrián was dancing with Samantha, he left her for a moment and took Nancy’s hand. She was amazed at how confident he was, her doubts were now gone; Samantha was not his girlfriend, or at least, that’s what it seemed like.
‘You dance well.’ Nancy said.
‘Thank you, just let yourself go, it’s easy.’ They were playing Latino music; Adrián knew how to move.
Nancy’s eyes did not leave him, but deep down she knew that if something did come up, she would not be around for too long because she was going to leave Spain at the end of the year to travel around Asia. But she was crazy about this guy, she knew that if she fell back in love it could be dangerous, she didn’t want it to happen, but it was a strong attraction...
‘I like your blue eyes. Where are you from?’ Adrián asked.
‘From Norwich, in the East of England. Are you from Cáceres?’
‘No, I used to live in San Sebastian, but I’ve been here for a while now.’ Adrián had his hands around Nancy’s waist, their faces were very close, the music stopped, and he went back to Samantha. They spoke to one another, but she seemed angry and at the end she stormed off.
‘Do you think that she is his girlfriend?’ Nancy asked Herminia.
‘Maybe, I don’t know what to think.’
At that moment he came back to dance with her. He took her hand. Nancy, surprised, let him do so, she could now focus better; he was tall, big eyes, he seemed determined and confident.
‘Was that your girlfriend?’ Nancy asked.
‘No, she is a friend of mine, she is tired and decided to go.’ He seemed to be telling the truth.
‘She wasn’t very friendly to you.’ Replied Nancy.
‘Well, I should have accompanied her home, but I am having such a good time...’
‘What a bad friend you are!’ She said jokingly.
‘Ahh, don’t tell me that please, I feel bad.’
‘Don’t worry, tomorrow you’ll go and see her.’
‘Umm yeah, as the friends that we are, sure.’ Nancy smiled, she liked putting him on the spot.
‘Are you a teacher?’ He asked drawing closer to her ear and smelling the aroma of her perfume, Nancy also took note of his.
‘Yes, in MFL, the Modern Languages school.’
‘How long have you been in Spain?’
‘This is my third year in Cáceres.’
The music stopped again, and Adrián took her by the hand.
‘Let’s go outside for a little bit, it is too hot in here, is that ok?’ He said.
‘Sure.’ She let him lead her away, she knew that she wanted something.
They were in front of the pub door, it was 5am and Adrián was gently caressing Nancy’s hands. Nancy felt it was a very affectionate gesture, he turned towards her with his striking honey-coloured eyes, watching her tenderly and intensely. Nancy felt nervous under Adrián’s powerful gaze.
‘Now it’s cold.’ He said... and he hugged her, holding her tightly. The hairs on the back of her neck stood up when his warm hands caressed her neck.
‘Your neck is so soft Nancy.’
‘Yours too.’ She answered, whilst she did the same and clutched his black hair.
Then Adrián stepped back slightly, he looked at her and he kissed her. It was a gentle kiss, slow and deliberate. Nancy held his face in her hands whilst he kissed her. Then after a few short seconds he pulled away, she smiled, and they kissed each other
