Jorge Eliécer Gaitán
Jorge Eliécer Gaitán, catedrático, ideólogo y dirigente político temperamental, nació en Bogotá el 23 de enero de 1898. Hijo de Eliécer Gaitán Otálora y Manuela Ayala Beltrán. Hizo estudios profesionales en la Facultad de Derecho de la Universidad Nacional en donde se graduó en derecho y ciencias políticas, el 29 de octubre de 1924.Por propia cuenta realizó el primer viaje a Europa donde complementó su formación políglota en inglés, francés e italiano y cursó estudios de especialización en la Universidad de Roma. Allí obtuvo el diploma de doctor en jurisprudencia, magna cum laude el 11 de julio de 1927. También obtuvo diploma en la Escuela de Especialización Jurídica-Criminal de la misma universidad.Fue concejal de Bogotá y presidente de la corporación en varios periodos; miembro de la Asamblea de Cundinamarca, y presidente de la misma durante varios periodos. Miembro de la Cámara de Representantes, senador de la república, y presidente de estas altas corporaciones durante varias legislaturas, en representación de varios departamentos.Candidato a la presidencia de la república en dos ocasiones. En 1947 encabezó las listas para integrar concejos municipales en más de 500 ciudades del país. Fue alcalde de Bogotá, ministro de las carteras de Educación, Trabajo, e Higiene y Previsión Social, rector de la Universidad Libre, magistrado de la Corte Suprema de Justicia en representación del senado pero no actuó como tal.Fue miembro y jefe único de la Dirección Nacional Liberal. Designado a la presidencia de la república, cuando tenía 33 años de edad. Hizo parte de la redacción del código de procedimiento penal que estuvo vigente durante varias décadas. Autor de una moderna y original teoría titulada “Criterio Positivo de la Premeditación”, calificada por el eminente jurista italiano Enrico Ferri como un gran aporte a la ciencia penal.En el momento en que gozaba de plena madurez política y profesional, era símbolo del pueblo colombiano y estrella doctrinaria de los latinoamericanos, fue asesinado en una céntrica calle de Bogotá el 9 de abril de 1948, razón por la que sobrevino una hecatombe que dividió en dos la historia de Colombia, antes y después de la fatídica fecha y que luego se prolongó con la violencia promovida por el Partido Comunista.
