About this ebook

Immortality demands a high price...

Khafeelamtek, First Vizier and Caretaker of the Secrets of the King, has been awoken one last time by the sun god, Ra, to perform an important task. His reward for successful completion will be peace in the afterlife–something he has coveted for millenia. But he did not count on becoming so quickly, and deeply, attracted to the lovely Dr. Cassandra Linsey, an Egyptologist and Linguist, who also happens to be the person selected by the gods as the caretaker of the secrets he must share.
Khafeel has five days in which to gain Dr. Linsey’s trust and reveal the existence of the mythical province of Niveka. Complicating things and adding a particularly irritating thorn in his side is the appearance of the beautiful, spoiled Sahrametatiri, twin sister and royal wife to the king, who has been awoken by Bast, to assure that Khafeel succeeds in his mission.

What should have been a simple chore of revealing proof of the existence of Niveka and thereby obtaining immortality for their ancient, doomed city, and achieving the long-sought peace in the afterlife for himself, has culminated in the painful realization that the most rare and precious treasure he has ever known must be abandoned...and there is nothing he could do to change their destinies. Or is there?

Adrianna Dane

Adrianna Dane has been putting pen to paper since the age of ten. She currently resides in the state of Washington. She has a great fondness for using a fountain pen when writing her first drafts. Hobby interests are varied, including photography and traveling. The first defining love story Adrianna read back in junior high school was "Wuthering Heights" by Emily Bronte, and that set her on the road to her long-standing love affair with books of all genres. Her inspiration in writing often can be found by listening to song lyrics, from hard rock to classical, and reading poetry by such poets as Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Edgar Allen Poe, and Ranier Maria Rilke. But finding inspiration for her stories truly has no boundaries for Adrianna. In 2006, her dark fantasy GLBT story, Body Parts, won its category in the Dream Realm Awards. Adrianna has written more than 100 stories, short, novella, and novel length, delving into many facets of the human condition - contemporary, futuristic, and fantasy, and all the flavors therein and in between. In other words, wherever the story and the characters, as well as their intricate stories, take her imagination, then her pen and/or computer keyboard, are sure to follow.

    Chapter One

    She is the chosen one.

Khafeel’s watchful gaze followed the compact, flame-haired woman as she strode across the hotel entryway. Belted khaki trousers emphasized her slender waist and rounded hips. The baggy camp shirt provided an adequate cloak to the feminine curves hidden beneath the rough garments.

She planted the wide-brimmed, mud-colored hat firmly on her head, hiding what little he’d been able to discern of her face from the lengthy distance across the crowded reception area.

This was the first glimpse of his contact. Striding away was the person who would allow him to fulfill the demands of his position and destiny.

His attention locked on the woman until she disappeared through the wide doors of the hotel and out onto the hot, congested sidewalk. Only then did he return his gaze to the dusky immortal beauty who was draped across the chair opposite him. Taking his time, he picked up the cup of potent Egyptian coffee and sipped leisurely before replacing it on the small granite table.

He was amused by the obvious impatience of the woman across from him as she deliberately scraped her long nails across the surface of the table in an effort to gain his attention.

    Well? she demanded.

He turned his black gaze upon her, schooling his expression in order to obliterate any hint of his thoughts about the woman.

What is it you wish to know, Sahra? You have not changed over the millennia. You are still as impatient as ever.

She tapped her hard, blood-red tinted nails against the table. I want to know what you think of her. What took you so long to get here anyway? I’m certain you received the summons at the same time I did. Our time is short. Can you convince her?

He scanned the room. The world had changed significantly during his long sleep after his last awakening. When his mortal life was ending, he had known he would be called to return to complete his duties. It had taken much longer than he’d hoped. First for Zyphir to convince the other gods of the need to right a wrong, and then in finding the perfect host to transfer the secrets of their lost civilization to. There had been others over the years, but this woman was the first to meet all their demands. Luckily, the gods saw fit to provide him with everything he needed to blend with the society of this age—knowledge of their customs, clothing, currency, and he was familiar with the native language of the woman.

Vast changes had taken place since the rule of King Zyphirasesammon and his royal wife, Queen Sahrametatiri, rulers of their homeland, the province of Niveka. All that remained of their civilization was concealed beneath the shifting sands of the Egyptian desert.

Nothing had survived after the devastation of the city, long, long ago—its remains now resting at the bottom of the Red Sea, or so deeply entrenched in the earth they would never be discovered—without help. His help. Even Sahra did not know all the secrets he must relay to the woman. Only Khafeel had ever been trusted with the full confidence of the king.

This world—these people—knew nothing of the rich, lush beauty of his home—one that had thrived beneath the rule of a strong, yet fair leader—a man he had called brother, whom he had served as First Vizier, Caretaker of the Secrets of the King, Royal Protector of his body.

It was those very secrets he was here to reveal—their hiding place known only to him. It had been his last act before his death. Zyphir had been his brother in all ways, except blood, and when he had ascended to the throne of Niveka, Khafeel had sworn an oath to serve him through his mortal life and into the afterlife. At that time, he’d held little awareness of the full import of that oath.

She is attractive, don’t you think? Sahra baited him. She had always attempted to do so, with her viperous tongue, her fragrant body. Although many had succumbed willingly, he had remained immune to her brand of seduction.

Though royal wife and twin sister to the god-king, she had been cared for by Zyphir as a sister, never a wife. Theirs had been a political
