PROLOGUE
Master Monroe, who always promised his most entrusted slaves freedom, suddenly died from a massive heart attack. His son, Jacob, instead of honoring his father's wishes one summer morning, confiscated a young couple’s hard-earned savings. In an attempt to pay his debts, he brought them to auction. They leave their only daughter, Tracy, behind, who was once favored. The young woman, barely out of her adolescence, must now work the fields and bear children against her will. In her early twenties, she took evasive action and destroyed her fertility with a common object used for such an occasion. She passes out from the pain and blood loss.
Surprisingly, her master sold her for a profit. As a result, she finds herself reunited with her family.
CHAPTER I
HOPE RIVER
Scene: The Mississippi Valley
Time: Two hundred Twenty Eight Years ago
She dared NOT say what she went through!
Tracy has not spoken of the horror she endured. Her husband of twelve years, whom she was optimistic about, promised never to take the bottle again. However, his false promises only deepened her depression. Her face swollen and bleeds from his repeated assaults. His anger now turns to the miracle child they share together. Nevertheless, even when pressed, she refuses to reveal what she is going through.
Tracy understands that if she flees, her family who remain would suffer at the hands of their master. She is afraid to take a risk, discouraged by everyone. Most nights, she lay awake in despair. Occasionally, she saw raccoons and other rodents become territorial when they were looking for garbage and table scraps in the yard next door, and she saw her neighbors visit each other at odd times. The routine calmed her down and brought her some peace and calm.
She was getting dressed near the window one night when she abruptly gasped at the sight she had witnessed, which was quickly followed by a chuckle. Oh no, Benson, you are NOT doing that to old lady Maria!
she exclaimed as she quickly covered her lips with her hand. She’s a widower, you’re crazy... yah, both are!
she snickered.
As time passed, her late-night distraction ran thin, and her alone periods were inevitably revisited by desperation and melancholy. Even the simplest of her escape plans had always involved some risk, and she came to the conclusion that there was no way out but to do the worst thing possible.
She makes the decision to commit suicide in the Hope River near her home.
She was ecstatic at the prospect of her agony coming to an end. She would go about her business as if she were the happiest person on the planet. When she put her son to bed at night, she sang a lullaby that her mother had taught her when she was a youngster. She waited a little longer after Doug was deep asleep, soaking in her son's radiant face, until her husband called her. She did not stop him from doing whatever he wanted... because it would be the last time he laid his hands on her, she reasoned.
She flung open the back door at midnight, sprang to the
