Chapter One
Jane
Three little words.
That's all it took to turn Jane’s life upside down.
I've missed you.
She stormed into the headquarters she and her fellow superheroes shared, the paper crumpled in her sweaty palm. Without even bothering to greet the receptionist and with no sense of guilt over acting like a complete bitch, she strode into the situation room and flung the paper at the conference table.
Good morning to you too, Jane,
Rob said, turning and lifting his eyebrow. Their leader’s gaze lowered to the piece of paper sitting on the table and unfurling with a gentle crinkle. He might be the brains of the group, but he was pretty damn slow to pick up on social cues. And what is this?
He’s out,
Jane stated, reaching back with both hands to gather her long, blonde hair in her fists and give it a tug. He’s out of jail and now he’s after me.
Oh, shit.
Annika joined her, brow furrowed. Their team was balanced with two women and two men and, more often than not, one pair sided against the other. At least Jane knew Annika had her back when the brunette squeezed her arm and asked, Are you sure?
Jane nodded and thrust her chin at the paper still sitting, untouched, on the table. See for yourself, if you don't believe me. He’s coming to get me.
I believe you.
Annika rubbed her hand over Jane’s shoulder, supportive as always. Thank goodness she had Jane’s back, because the guys were usually a different story. Rob might be their leader because he was calm, cool, and collected, but Jane would replace him with Annika in a heartbeat. She leaned into her friend and shuddered. This nightmare could not be happening to her, but it was...
Rob finally got off his lazy ass, picked up the paper, read those three little words, and shook his head. It could be a prank. After all, he did compromise your identity. He might have revealed that information to outsiders or sent someone else to do his dirty work.
Jeez, Rob, give her the benefit of the doubt,
Annika snarled, tossing her long, dark hair and glaring at him. Once again, Jane was grateful for her friend when she went into her Mama Bear mode.
Their leader looked up at them, brow furrowing as if he wasn’t sure which situation was more difficult - dealing with two emotional female superheroes with the ability to blast him through one of the windows of their twelfth story office, or the possibility of a supervillain breaking out of a remote island prison. Look, I’m just saying we shouldn’t jump to conclusions,
he temporized.
Fine. I'll check with the prison for confirmation,
Annika volunteered and left the room. Without an ally at her side, Jane resumed tugging at her hair. The pain of it didn’t distract from
