Alternity: One

Perched on the edge of infinities uncounted, a cobbled-together space station named "Alternity: One" orbits the chaotic storms at the galactic core. Perforations and rents in space-time open upon parallel reality after parallel reality. Its crew is just as piecemeal as the station: most without a way home. At the same time, they all have something in common.

Every crew member is David Foster. Male. Female. Human. Artificial. They are all alternates of one another.

Today, as happens from time-to-time on the station, a new crew member has arrived. Sole survivor of his ship, he has lost everything. Dubbed "Copper", the station crew hopes he will acclimate and thrive. To help him adjust, he has been assigned to the station's custodian: Rat.

A tale of identity, uniqueness, and commonality, "Alternity: One" follows a vastly different pair of beings who are, at their core, the same person: stranded at the center of multiple universes ... with themselves.

I wrote about robots. When I was a kid, my first story was about robots that looked like people: the only survivors of a world-wide nuclear war. What can I say? I grew up in the 70's. Since then I've sculpted all manner of stories about all sorts of topics. Science Fiction and Fantasy still remain favorites of mine and, usually, what I can express in speculative fiction I'd rather not express in other formats. I love short stories and am working on making this writing bug that I've harbored for so many years finally work for me. Here goes nothing.

Adjunct to report on the collision between trade vessel Aleph-Dawn and the previously unidentified craft (now known as The Stellae) running parallel to ecliptic from an estimated trajectory of 98:112:3:-22.121.

All hands lost save for, as expected, two David Fosters: one from each ship.

The reality storm preceding the impact was predictive of the disaster but the unknown origins of the new craft made its prevention, impossible. This wasn’t the first time a known ship has been lost coming through the stellar flux but it is the first that a David Foster was on-board.
