About this ebook
It's mid twenty-first century, and gene therapy has come a long way. The medical uses of gene editing have become common and routine, however, the potential of misuse is great. Because of past experiments that went horribly wrong, laws have been passed to prevent cloning. Still, there are rumors of what goes on in secret government labs.
Dr. Glen Hayden is highly esteemed for his work in the field of genetics and the son of one of its pioneers. He is visiting from Scotland to speak at their annual conference when he spots Miss Dawn Morgan, a research analyst at Genetra Labs. That is the same facility where his father worked almost thirty years ago. Dr. Hayden is instantly attracted to her, but his interest seems to be more than just amorous.

I have always loved science. If I were better at math, I may have pursued it, but,I suppose writing about science is my second choice. This is my first effort at short fiction, and I welcome your comments on it. I am considering several sequels using these same characters, and so I appreciate any feedback you might give. I am retired and live with my daughter, son-in-law, two cats and two birds near Baltimore Maryland. And yes, I personally answer all my own mail. Thank you so much for reading. jdoren@yahoo.com

Many thanks to my daughter Becki for her helpful suggestions.
Dedicated to the men and women of science.
The lab was dark and quiet. The only light still on, was over Dawn’s desk where she worked alone, late into the night.
She didn’t have to stay. She could go home and lay in bed tossing, turning, trying to get to sleep. At least here, she felt useful. It was peaceful and quiet except for the humming of the sequencing equipment down the hall. They never stop analyzing samples, and cranking out data that will be read and sorted on Monday when the crew comes back to work.
Her monitor glowed back at her as she sorted through files and sipped at the sweet red wine she had snuck in from home. She thought about everything that had happened in the last few weeks.
The first time she met Dr. Glen Hayden, he seemed like a complete ass. So sure of himself. Everyone, at the meeting, even the other doctors who gathered around clung to his every word.
Taking another sip of wine, she tried to come to grips with her own pre-conceived notions about
